In honor of Halloween we’re reviewing an 80’s Halloween Movie!!!

Honestly my favorite part of this film is the theme song, it has no business going as hard as it does. WHO YOU GONNA CALL.

Overall plot and story: 6/10. Honestly this film sailed far on concept and that’s all it served. But hey, it’s what it said on the tin. They busted those ghosts. It honestly could have been much better if the plot was less misogynistic. But as much as venkman was an asshole, his 3 autistic friends made up for it.

80s Vibes: 7/10. Less slice of life 80s stuff and more cheesy 80s sci fi effects, which I usually rate higher if they’re practical. But they did look fun.

As much as I love the vibe of this movie it genuinely could have been better and I know I’m being way too harsh, considering how iconic and camp it is, but hey, god forbid I be picky.

Top Secret

I’m surprised I hadn’t watched this earlier, since Val Kilmer in the 80s is my transition goals after all. But better late than never, as they say.

Overall plot and construction? Camp/10. Listen. Was it homophobic? Was it misogynistic? Was it racist? Was it stupid? Yes, yes, and yes. But did it commit to the bit? Hell yeah honey. I love movies that are unapologetically stupid. I study 80s films on this blog because I want to make movies in my career that can commit to the fucking bit (just maybe with less racism and misogyny and homophobia). Anyway this movie committed. I was laughing the whole time. Was I drunk while watching? Yes. Am I still drunk? Possibly. But I had fun and that’s what matters.

Overall 80s vibes: 5/10. Honestly this film felt more 70s than 80s. Maybe because it took so much inspiration from Airplane! but idk. The hair was 80s as fuck tho. Val Kilmer worked that shit. God I miss him so much. Every day I miss him.

This movie was a solid comedy and a classic, I love Val movies and I’m biased as fuck but I don’t care. I love him. And his commitment to the bit. Classically trained actors hit different.

Heathers (1989)

This one wasn’t a suggestion but my director wanted me to watch it, and I do what she wants.

Overall plot and movie construction? 10/10. This film is a classic for a reason. It had a great thesis about what it means to try to control things when you feel entirely out of control of everything, and it carried it out perfectly, with the setting being high school, the multiple types of manipulation, the repetition, and Que Sera Sera as the intro/outro, lots of great stuff that’s already been analyzed and I won’t get into here. But yeah, masterpiece. It’s a surprise I haven’t seen it sooner but hey I’m catching up here.

80s vibes/aesthetic? Also 10/10. Lots of incredible color palettes (and also the red of the high school colors/cheerleader pom poms mimicking blood, nice touch), great costumes, insane hair. Just very 80s all around. Can’t wait to reblog a hundred gifsets.

As for queer coding I’m always on the lookout for, HELL YES. There was so much lesboeroticism in this film, from the psychological mean girl manipulation, to the gay flirtatious comments Winona Ryder swaps with the girls, and the kiss at the end. Bravo, powerful dykery, I really enjoyed it.

Overall I liked this one a lot, idk whether to place it in drama, comedy, or horror, but it was a lot of fun. I’m not interested in seeing the musical though, I’m not really into musical theater. As always the ask box is open for 80s movie suggestions, throw a title in there and I’ll give it a whirl.
