Before and after home makeover. 1955 atomic atomic ranch, Atlanta, GA.
Before and after home makeover.
Discovered while walking in Northwest Portland's Alberta district. I thought this was a really well-designed house though it may actually be an apartment complex. Hard to say. Just love the wood in the open balcony area upstairs.
The High Museum of Art is one of the most attractive works of modern architecture in Atlanta (Rodin's "The Shade" in the foreground). And don't tell anyone but Fulton County Residences get in free the first Saturday of every month. It was built in 1983 and designed by architect Richard Meier, Newark, New Jersey. More here.
A friend of mine just launched this product. I wish we had a dog. It's the coolest dog house I think I've ever seen.
Historical Arapahoe Acres subdivision, Denver, CO
We've read about it for years in various magazines like Dwell and Atomic Ranch but finally had a chance to drive through it. There are only like 130 houses in the subdivision but they are all in almost perfect nick. On the Arapahoe Acres website, it claims to be "the first post-World War II residential subdivision listed as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places". The homes were built between 1949 and 1957. I wasn't able to get very good photos but there are loads on their website. This first photo shows a house for sale with which we scheduled a tour with the agent. It is the only house for sale in the subdivision. Built in 1956. Corner lot with tiny garden. Way overpriced and in need of a great deal of work. (The owner has decided to rent it as they have had no offers). If you want to "walk" through the neighborhood on Google Street View, here is the address: 1510 E Cornell Ave, Englewood, CO 80113.
Another random drive by. There seem to be a lot of these modern designs cropping up all over intown Atlanta. Boxy but good.
I passed this house in a nearby neighborhood. Certainly not "midcentury" but definitely "modern". :-) I especially love the privacy wall on the front which allows them to have the floor to ceiling windows, courtyard, and all the light yet retain their privacy front and back.
Portland Area "Atomic Ranch" Subdivisions
I have a feeling that the residents of these neighborhoods, although proud of their heritage, might be less than enthusiastic about me reposting directions to their neighborhood. But since they already existed on RummerNet, here they are.
Directions to Rummer Subdivisions Vista Brook/Bohmann Tract (Portland): SW Garden Home Rd. at SW 84th/SW 87th (north of Garden Home) Vista Brook II (Washington County): SW Denney at SW 105th (south of Denney) Hyland Hills (Beaverton): SW 130th at SW Hart (area to north and west) Menlo West (aka Bonnie Brae) (Beaverton): SW Menlo Dr. at SW Bonnie Brae St. (west of Menlo) Oak Hills (Washington County): NW Cornell Road at NW 153rd Valle Vista (Gresham) SW Towle Road at SW 10h
Great article about a remodelers making a difference in his community.
Our Coffee Table and Rug from Room and Board. Room and Board rocks midcentury modern in both style and quality.
Last weekend we visited my cousin who had recently inherited his parent's Broyhill Brasilia bedroom suite. We were instantly stunned by its beauty. It is one of the best examples of Midcentury furniture I have ever seen. I love the swooping design motif, from the large doors down to the perfectly accented drawer and door pulls. I suppose the fact that it is original and authentic and spent the last 50 years in my aunt and uncle's house made it all the more beautiful. But then I've always been sentimental. More information on the Broyhill Brasilia collection can be found at Retro Renovation and Brasilia Connection.
There was a time when we were considering gutting this vintage pink-tiled bathroom but over time have grown to love it. So it was very reassuring when some good friends of ours forwarded this website dedicated to the preservation of the 1950s "Mamie Pink" bathroom. Check out SaveThePinkBathrooms.com.
