Throwbackthursday: Carver Mobile Library

Carver Library: "Originally opened in 1942 on Government Street above the Eagle Drug Store"

"The Carver Branch Library Book mobile holds over 1,500 books. Once a week stops were made at Zion City School, Rite Away Oyster House, Capitol Avenue at 44th Street, East End Theatre on 33 rd St., Peter Nasca's Grocery (Polk Street and East Boulevard) and Valley Park (Mitchell's Store). Twice a week stops were made at the Scotlandville Post Office."

Our TBT goes to last years 9/11 Service Project at the Raven's Outreach Center for Homeless Veterans.  We will be at Raven's again this 9/11 to paint a mural of the American Flag on their walls along with the 5 badges of the armed services.  If you are interested in participating in the painting of the murals email [email protected].

9/11 Service Project

For this years 9/11 Service Project, we are working again with Raven's and other local non-profits.  For the past few weeks, we have been gathering pallets from local businesses to be repurposed into outdoor furniture.  

The pallets require some prep work before they can be turned into furniture. Darrius, Damon, and Chaz have been working tirelessly on the project in preparation for the day of the event.  

To build the furniture we have partnered with HBI, DNA Workshop, and the Hunt and Dixon Correctional Centers.  

Here is a sample of some near finished benches.  On the day of the service project we will work with other volunteer groups to make the installations.

Purpose Of The Blog

The purpose of this blog is to connect with the community through media.  We will be posting photographs, stories, and videos of our work in Mid City.  Our vision is to show the community what we do and who we are as an organization.  We also want to show you who we are as individuals and tell you why we love Mid City.

The MCRA: An Introduction

The Mid City Redevelopment Alliance is a non-profit organization specializing in community development.  The mission of the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance is to promote and develop the growth and renewal of the Mid City region of Baton Rouge by attracting new and retaining current residents and businesses. 

  At the heart of our mission is the belief that the future of the Baton Rouge community is dependent on the health and vitality of its urban center. 

  The MCRA exists to recognize Mid City’s tangible assets that need to be supported.  Support comes through partnerships, volunteer activities and raising awareness to benefit the needs of the community. 

  By matching residents with resources, advocating for aggressive reinvestment in the region, working with public and private agencies to advance the mission of our organization, as well as advocating and implementing policy changes that improve all urban areas, we are striving to make a difference in Mid City.
