The people that are making up excuses for inviting anyone involved in a detention center are a big reason why the USA politics got to the point they are at right now
it's really sad to see tbh. like some of these ppl defending this on here, i've known for years. some of them were my mutuals up until a few months ago even. i've known them for close to 10 years. and tbh i don't think they're "bad" or "immoral". from what i know about these people, they have cared abt issues like racism, given support for the black lives matter movement, the free palestine movement... if you go to their blogs, they have several "ICE OUT" posts as well. i really do think their heart's in the right place (or atleast it used to be) but the cognitive dissonance from seeing their fave associating with a man making a profit from an ICE detention center and how it clashes with their pre existing liberal beliefs just doesn't allow for them to admit that maybe things are worse than they thought. it's like when their values were really put to the test, and they had to decide between these issues that they thought they cared about but didn't affect them personally vs. their favourite celebrity that their lives have revolved around... they just decided to chuck the values and cling to the celeb. because that's easier than having to face the reality of what all this means.
so they resort to justifying it. they want to excuse it. some of them want to categorically deny it even happened. but when you start to ignore your own values to continue to pledge your loyalty to a billionaire celebrity... that's not sustainable in the long run. maybe if you're privileged enough, you can continue to do that because it won't affect you or anyone you care about, but what kind of a life is that? i really hope they see that instead of continuing down this path. tolerating intolerance as long as it doesn't affect you is antithetical to the values of any decent person.
