in order for wwx to cast the spell on lwj, he needs to take his voice, the most powerful weapon of the lans, an entire sect built on magic and their history as sirens. so wwx promised to keep it safe for lan zhan, locking it away right where his core used to be.
together they traveled to the surface, and did what needed to be done.
when they return, barely making it out alive, they were met by the lans. rumours have spread that wwx was conspiring with the wens, tricking the poor hanguang jun and taking him as hostage. lwj did not hand the sea witch over. Instead, he pointed his sword against his elders.
lwj brings wwx back to the burial trenches, and returns home to receive his punishment. he goes into seclusion, injured, bed ridden, unable to travel back to the burial trenches to see if his love is okay.
one day, lan wangji wakes up screaming, voice seeping back down his neck.
