i know that it must be really frustrating for people who were fans of mal in the books to see people bashing him while they praise show!mal. i think that mal was one of the tgt characters who suffered the most from being seen solely from alina’s point of view, because she is so insecure about him. even the (very frustrating to read) scene where he confronts her about the darkling during their reunion makes so much more sense from his perspective. to her, he hasn’t been writing and now he shows up out of nowhere to yell at her for having feelings for someone else! and that’s what we see and it is infuriating! but from his perspective hes just gone on a months long mission where his two friends died in order to get to her because she wasn’t writing and she had been kidnapped and then she walks out in a party dress and he feels just as abandoned she does.

alina is the pov character and mal hurts her a lot. its a lot harder to see his perspective and feel sympathy with him while you’re reading through her eyes. so i think a lot of people, myself included, will like mal a lot more in the show. and i, personally, have nothing but respect for you who have been here since the beginning

It's been a long while since I last read the series, but I remember my distinct dislike for mal as a love interest, and feeling much uninterested in the character as a whole because of the unreliability of the pov. I decided I was going to stick with those feelings because that's what I had been given by the writer, if Leigh wanted a bigger connection with the reader to mal, the pov could've changed but it didn't.

That being said, the show opens a brand new door of possibilities to all the characters, for me it's like a blank slate. Making a judgment on things that haven't come out is a disservice to show, for is a separate entity from the original piece of work, and clearly very different from it.

I hold no regrets for my feelings towards the characters in the original piece of work, but I won't hold that as a standard for the new body of work.

Except for The darkling. Fuck that bitch. Love you Ben Barns :)
