WATCHING CLASSIC WHO BLOG PT.10
So, it’s been a while and I’ve watched five more classic who stories. I’ll quickly give my thoughts on them.
Planet of evil: 7.5/10. Such fun. I love Sarah Jane and the doctor so much, both individually but definitely as a duo, and this is just peak for them. So many cute moments. It’s very clear here just how capable Sarah Jane is and just how well she knows the Doctor. They’ve clearly been traveling for a long time and are completely tuned in, though she still challenges him when need be. The story is fun, not really anything special, but I enjoyed it. Props again to the side characters, especially that older guy who takes command and helps Sarah Jane and the doctor. Without him they’d be dead.
The deadly assassin: 6.5/10. It’s a mixed bag for me. I love seeing more of Gallifrey and the time lords, the master is ridiculously fun and the sequence in the matrix is super duper interesting. However, the time lord side characters are kinda boring (as is expected) and I just don’t think the fourth doctor works all that well on his own. That’s in no way a jab at Tom Baker, he’s great and I know going solo was his idea, but I think he needs someone to bounce off.
Face of evil: 9/10. Up there for me with Genesis. It does so much well. The fourth doctor is at his very best, with a mix of being hilarious, eccentric and kind (to Leela). He’s also rightfully pissed when he needs to be. Leela is simply amazing. She’s extremely smart in spite of being a “savage”, extremely brave too and she’s clearly got her heart at the right place. She’s eager to learn as well and I like that she’s the one insistent on traveling with the doctor. The world building is peak, the pacing excellent and I love the general idea it’s going for.
Robots of death: 7/10. Solid fun. I like Leela forming a connection with that second in command lady. It’s giving lesbian vibes. Robots going bad is something I’ll always be into. The side characters start off boring but get better the further into the story you go.
Talons of Weng Chiang: 6.5/10. I just don’t get the appeal. The last two parts are fun and I like those 2 side characters who end up helping the doctor, especially that professor guy. Leela has some great moments again and she looks hot. I also like the setting, but that’s it. The concept is just, some evil scientist guy in the 51st century does time travel, it goes wrong and a bunch of Chinese think he’s some kind of god. Okay??? Apart from the racism, which is icky enough, it just doesn’t really stand out to me. And there was absolutely no need for this to be six parts.
