me and marty @pistachions have been talking about the last human andā¦ wellā¦ rimmer obviously has to tell michael that heās not actually all these amazing things that yvonne mcgruder said he is. however. the posse are in a different universe to what they were in, right? so isnāt there all the potential that rimmer actually COULDVE been all those things in this universe and heās hurt michaelās feelings for no reason?

also marty pointed out that this is also a universe in which rimmer gets with kochanski of all people, so heās got be be slightly less of a loser in this universe for that to happen anywayā¦
weāre both kind of intrigued by this conceptā¦ i kinda want to write it for some reason.
i always forget people prefer to leave a note on tumblr if you promote a fic there rather than leave a kudos, and then sometimes iām looking at ao3 stats and iām like āoh šā then log onto tumblr and it changes to āoh š„¹ā
so iāve got 6/8 chapters out for this new thing i wrote where i socially swap rimmer and lister and see what that does to their personalities (in my opinion). so, rimmer grows up in care and stuff (but because of abusive parents) and is later homeless. meanwhile, lister might be an orphan, but the dad who adopts him is filthy rich.
what have i learned so far from this project?
it kind ofā¦ suits them this way around? the way iāve written it anyway. i feelā¦ i think rimmerās just so much traumatised in this one that the way he is becomes far more justifiable. iāve written it so everyone just feels so sorry for him and what life has put him through that heās actually quite popular on red dwarf ā not popular in a way rimmer likes, but people are kind to him. also, lister is just himself but more sheltered, extra sweet and more hygiene-conscious. his charm is just through the roof, but you do get those moments where you realise heās a bit of a love-sick, dopey idiot, like in canon.
itās hard to explain without just making you guys read what iāve written, but yeah. iām now haunted by the fact it didnāt feel odd writing rimmer as homeless and lister as a rich kid.
hopefully people think iāve imagined what they would be like accurately and itās not too far from canon

Rimmer's spent most of his life living under bridges. Meanwhile, Lister grew up in a manor.
Both ends of society are just as lonely as the other. They'll learn this, they just have to wait to meet ā as new bunkmates on Red Dwarf.
i just had a culture shock, which was getting a comment on an older fic from an old fandom i was in where they were like āthis is great, BUTā¦ā then went to tell me about a contradiction i wrote that they didnāt like. then, i got an edit on the same comment of them realising they were being stupid and i had written it right, but they still thought i couldāve written it clearer. either way, no one asked. and i think they realised that because then i logged onto ao3 to tell them i never asked, and the comment wasnāt there.
anyway, it was a culture shock because i feel like, now iām in the red dwarf fandomā¦ i havenāt ever been in a friendlier, more peaceful place. part of my shock was being used to how chill and sweet you all are. so, thank you!!

the last time I reblogged this post right before I got a great job, in a permanent work-from-home position, with benefits, retirement, and a salary literally 3x what I was making before, doing something I really like.Ā
I know in the episode they said that Rimmer became Ace from being held back and Arnold from going to the next grade because the main Rimmer just learned to make excuses while Ace learned to fight, but I think it's more than that.
Rimmer clearly struggles with learning. He studies like crazy and still keeps failing tests. He goes over material over and over again just to forget all of it immediately. He'll memorize formulas but have no clue what they mean. I think what happened for him in school is that he struggled with learning the material and learning how to learn, but the school just kept shuffling him through the benchmarks instead of actually giving him extra help. So he gets to adulthood with no idea how anything works and no idea how to teach it to himself. But Ace, repeating a grade, probably got to actually LEARN the material from that grade and learn how to better understand material from future grades.
I don't think it's just that Rimmer himself did something wrong. I think what the main Rimmer said is true: Ace was given an advantage he wasn't. Ace got help. Rimmer was left entirely to his own devices to just continue the cycle of struggling.

i canāt believe i went 24 years (nearly) without even guessing i might have adhd when i sit here, stomach rumbling uncontrollably with hunger, but i just leave it like that because i cant find the energy or motivation to get up and get something to eat.
sorry i got distracted from other projects and have started writing a fic where rimmer runs away from home as a kid and ends up in care and then homeless like lister, whereas lister is adopted by a rich family.
