death by a thousand cuts is reddie.
ok, so as a collective group of people we’ve decided that taylor swift wrote lover (2019) about reddie. in my opinion death by a thousand cuts is one of the reddie(iest) songs from lover, and i’ll be analyzing each lyric as to why because i’m like that.
“saying goodbye is death by a thousand cuts, flashbacks waking me up.” this line directly references eddie’s d**th in chpt 2, richie had to say goodbye to eddie and leave him in the house on neibolt street and he feels guilty about not being able to at least get him out of the house. “flashbacks waking me up” implies that the losers only just getting all of their memories of back as richie wakes up remembering times of him and eddie when they were younger.
“i get drunk, but it’s not enough, cause the morning comes and your not my baby.” this line doesn’t really need to be explained. in short it’s just eddie’s de*d and getting drunk isn’t enough to numb that pain.
“i looked through the windows of this love, even though we boarded them up, chandelier’s still flickering here.” this line could be interpreted in different ways, my idea is that due to period typical homophobia they couldn’t like each other in the way they wanted to, but now after 27 years they’re still looking through the ‘window’ to see that the chandelier (love) is still there.
“cause i can’t pretend it’s okay when it’s not, it’s death by a thousand cuts.” this line is pretty self explanatory, cause life sucks when the loml is dead ✌🏻
“i dress to kill my time, i take the long way home. i ask the traffic lights if it’ll be alright, and they say “i don’t know”” i interpret this line as the aftermath of chpt 2 as richie takes the long way home, after eddies de*th unsure of how to continue.
“and what once was ours is no one’s now i see you everywhere, the only thing we share is this small town.” *sigh* ya, their relationship... the banter... all of it... ya it’s over, leaving that the only thing left of their relationship is derry. with the line i see you everywhere could imply as the kissing bridge as the r+e is their and special places of their relationship throughout the rest of the town.
“you said it was a great love, one for the ages. but if the story’s over why am i still writing pages” honestly not really sure how to fully explain this line except, maybe, richie still misses eddie while you can’t write the story anymore cause... you know.
and honestly verse two is just about being depressed after all of this so to summarize dbatc is reddie...
