You’ve heard of the Roaring 20s........
now get ready for the Screaming 20s - coming to a decade near you in 2020
is it too early or can we start screaming now
in retrospect perhaps we should have started sooner
this post is the equivalent of a newspaper from the day of the outbreak being blown past by the wind after you wake up in a post apocalyptic world
World Heritage Post
i really appreciate seeing all the posts on my dash recently to the effect of "shutting down conversations about race/gender/minorities in fandom spaces because 'fandom is meant to be fun' is just an excuse to not think critically about the bigoted behaviors you are exhibiting". i hope that this energy carries over into the gaming sphere next pleaaseee
pokemon is a series about building Your own team and going on Your own adventure with creatures that You collect and befriend, and is designed from the ground up to be personal and immersive. i have never been able to look like myself in a pokemon game. if i bought pokemon z a today and booted it up and tried to customize myself, i would not be able to look like myself. just fuck me i guess.
ok yay
Ultimately, the fact of the matter is that there’s a profound difference between taking some liberties while adapting a story and completely changing the characters and themes of said story as a supposed adaptation. Jesus Christ Superstar works as an “adaptation” of the gospels because a) it does not pretend to be a faithful adaptation, but rather a play on the original story; b) it’s different in many ways, but the core of the story remains the same: it deals with themes of faith, mystery and contemplation of a higher will, predestination and free will, the relationship between humanity and the divine; it differs in its elaboration of those themes from the original, and introduces some new elements, but it’s still ultimately a story about those themes, and the characters — although explored in different ways — are still the same characters at their core.
Just like you can’t write a Jesus that is unforgiving, or a Judas that doesn’t betray Jesus in the end, you can’t write an Odysseus that’s not cunning and deceitful and full of hubris. Those are the traits that make him Odysseus. You can give him PTSD from the Trojan war, sure; you can explore the complexities of his character and any guilt he might feel about his actions, and still have him feel like Odysseus; I think the novel Circe by Madeline Miller does it fairly well, for instance. But you can’t write an Odysseus who is a good, honest, straightforward man trying to grapple with his war crimes, simply because that is not Odysseus. And in the same vein, if you want to write a take on the Odyssey but you want to forgo all exploration of the original themes and concepts in favour of your own ideas, it would be worth it to look for a different epic poem that might be a better base for your ambitions.
Look, I’m not the adaptation police. I’ve read plenty of stories that completely subverted the core of the respective original works and I’ve loved them to bits; but there has to be a clear connection between the story and the subsequent take on the story, or it doesn’t work. You can’t just write your original work with specific themes and characters, slap some familiar names on it and call it an Odyssey, and people are allowed to say so.
nimble, a border collie-papillon mix, wins the 12” class in the 2024 masters agility championship. the first time a mixed breed has won at westminster ever.
context explaining why the announcer is screaming, this is supposed to take a high level competitive agility dog 40 seconds
This video makes me cry every time it’s on my dash and I can’t even iterate why.
Like the dog doesn’t even know it’s a competition and she’s made history. She(?) just is happy and knows she made her owner happy too.

always a pleasure to see this girl on my dashboard
we need to start legally protecting these like make this kind of bathroom part of the national park system
i have been shaving my head for several months now and im an old hand at most of the weirdness that comes with it. ive seen so many strange things - a beanie torn in half after i tried brute force yanking it off my stubble, strangers hands gripping my head like a sort of fleshy bowling ball, c-beams glittering in the dark by the tanhauser gate.
but still, sometimes, things surprise me. and i was surprised today. because today an old man approached me at the park. and he said, you know, im a pediatrician.
which is already a weird start to a conversation, because i didnt know that. and maybe i should have just rolled with it, but instead i went
wait. i dont know that. why did you think i knew that?
which didn't even put him slightly off balance.
cuz you're bald, he said, so confidently that i didnt even question it until the conversation was over. now. i was - i was over there, sitting -
and he gestured across the park to a giant pile of soft dirt that had an almost cartoonishly exaggerated ass print on it which derailed me for the second time. right? because whoever sat on that dirt, clearly, had an ass like two coconuts being fired out of a spanish cannon. whereas this man had an ass that could probably only be detected with powerful scientific instruments. i told him this in more succint terms by simply saying that was clearly not his buttprint.
now at this point we'd gotten derailed twice, and as unflappable as he'd been the first time, he was starting to get a little defensive. so he said perhaps someone with a large butt sat down after i got up, and i said why are you lying about where you were sitting, and he said why would i do that? and i said if i knew, i wouldnt be asking, and he said fine, i was driving by - and i said why didn't you just say you were driving by?!?!?!?! and he said because i didn't want you to think i was the kind of crazy person that would just stop his car to tell a stranger in a park that he, as a pediatrician, could tell that your parents REALLY cared about tummy time!
then he left. angrily. he actually stomped back to his car. i dont know when i started laughing but i didnt stop until i got home. my voice is still all scratchy right now. ive been in a little bit of a writing funk but i had to get this down while i could still remember it so perfectly.
and as a tangent, i cannot emphasize enough the benefits of going outside and interacting with the public. it is a constant source of joy. every place on earth is the weirdest place on earth. i will never be able to write a character as fascinating as the people i run into at the park. but god help me, i have to try.
op thank you for explaining in the tags because I had no idea what the fuck that meant

“which could mean nothing” is my favorite sentence ever bc on the surface it describes something that COULD indeed mean nothing. but we use it to emphasize the other side of that coin i.e. that it could also mean something. it keeps us grounded bc we are technically focusing on the liklihood that the information given doesn’t necessarily imply gay sex is happening, while still silently acknowledging the possibility that it might.
like genuinely the cultural baggage around fanfiction will have people saying the most absurd stuff. what prompted that last post is i was watching a video about publishing fanfiction and they quoted an author saying 'no-one but me is allowed to interpret my characters'
and im like hey. hey. look me in the eye and say that again. what the fuck do you mean no-one's allowed to interpret your characters? your characters get re-interpreted anytime a new person reads your got damn book. everyone is interpreting your characters all the time. what are you talking about.
need a hat that says I WONT SPEAK UNLESS SPOKEN TO AND ITS NOT BECAUSE IM DISINTERESTED AND DONT LIKE YOU I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND SOCIAL INTERACTION AS WELL AS MOST PEOPLE AND ASSUME BY DEFAULT MY PRESENCE IS UNWELCOME AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE SO I KEEP TO MYSELF BUT I DONT MIND IF YOU INITIATE so i can wear it to work
20 years ago, it was a scandal that Google started to track which links you clicked on the search-results page,
this is like finding a journal written by someone before the zombie apocalypse happened
speaking of libraries and how good and important they are, i drew this last month as a thank-you for the graphic novel and comics round table awards at ALA for naming Hunger's Bite one of their honor books for YA fiction.
librarians are at the front of the fight against book bans and the defunding of libraries, and are an invaluable part of our social safety net. and for authors--they are out greatest cheerleaders and customers. you must respect the library!!! you must!!!!!
go to your local library!! check out books!!! check out MY book and read it for free. i want you to!!!
