The Austin Revit 2018 Spring 2018, Personal Project

The Austin came to mind most recently, in 2018. It’s a small slab-on-grade home with 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and a two-car garage, designed for a midwestern climate. The major motivation was a small house that could be good for two roommates or a single parent and their child. It would be a house that was relatively lost cost, while still feeling spacious and having an open design.

I also thought this house could be a good candidate for an updated Craftsman style. By adding open soffits, columns in the front, and some exposed beams or gable-end details, the house could be a great crossover between modern styling and classic craftsmanship. Likewise inside, a bit of crown molding and different lighting fixtures could bring this design the feel of an old, well-loved home while keeping modern amenities and building techniques.

The Log Cabin Revit 2018 Spring 2018, Personal Project

The cabin was prompted to mind after talking to a friend while showing him my portfolio. He said that his dream house was a log cabin. The thought I had in mind was a log cabin on my grandparents’ lakeside property in Maine. Every summer, we all go up to the lake for a week and spend time together, fishing, going out in the kayaks or on the boat, and so on. The current cabin is a one-room, one-bathroom that measures 15’x20’.

My proposed theoretical house would much better accommodate for the company that frequently occupy the space. A decently sized kitchen and spacious living area make it much easier to host family during bad weather, and the two bedrooms downstairs allow for company to stay over. The many windows allow for enjoyment of the view in all directions, and likewise for the deck. The basement has barn doors for storing the fishing boat and kayaks. It would have a partial post foundation like in southern coastal homes, lessening damage to the structure in the case of flooding.

The Adobe Revit 2018 Fall 2017, Personal Project

The Southern Adobe has one of my most favorite living spaces of all my projects. Started in late 2017, I’ve actually been imagining this design for a couple years, but struggled for a long time to express it into Revit and be happy with it. But finally, I put things together and I am thrilled with the result. The laundry room is a pet peeve, but I still love this design. The high ceiling in the living area provides a very open feeling, and great sight towards a sunset or a lovely view. The wall shown in these lower renderings is composed of a huge array of shelves that could be filled with books or trinkets or pretty much anything, and is a striking, dramatic feature.

The Swiatek Revit 2018 Fall 2017, Personal Project 

Proposed in 2017, the Swiatek is a design based around my friend’s dream house. This project is one of my favorites. It is a large house, and verges on excessive with its high ceilings and broad windows. But the windows provide access to the great views that would be available on a property of rolling fields or thick forest, which is what she had in mind. It also has the spacious kitchen with plenty of workspace so that she can cook to her heart’s content.

The Kenmoor Revit 2018 Fall 2017, Personal Project

The Kenmoor was initially a project from 2013, the beginning of my senior year of high school. It was going to be my final project, but I decided to abandon it, instead choosing a different design. I rediscovered it in late 2017 on an old flashdrive, and decided to revive and complete it. It has since become one of my proudest pieces. It’s not the greatest design, not entirely practical, but I feel that it is a very attractive home.

I imagined this house being built in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, hence the decision against employing mudrooms or air breaks. While it doesn’t translate well over the floorplan, the basement stairs have a landing that exits towards the garage.

QHCC Project, Revit 2012 Spring 2013, Pathfinder RVTHS

This project was originally commissioned in 2013, my junior year of high school, by the Quaboag Hills Chamber of Commerce. They requested a ranch home, but beyond that, there was little other requirement. My classmates and I were competing against each other to have our design built. In the end, they chose my design, a three bedroom ranch house with a walkout basement, two car garage, and multiple windows on the south side, which faced a forest and a sprawling field beyond that.

In the following summer, when they began inspecting the site they were going to build on, it was found that the site was encumbered by wetlands, and even using a neighboring empty lot, they could not build the house.

The Sun (Originally a Von Dutch “Flying Eyeball”) Auto Air Colors on pre-cut Aluminum Sheetmetal Original Size 14″ x 8″ Airbrushing II, Spring 2016, Springfield Technical Community College

Hindsight - The original assignment here was a Von Dutch Flying Eyeball. However, I found myself struggling to make a design that was satisfying, was at my skill level, and could be completed in a timely fashion. I also wanted to make my own spin on the shape. Looking back now, I’m not entirely satisfied. I feel like there’s a lot that could be improved on. But given my abilities, I have to say that this wasn’t half bad.

‘98 Ford F250 - Repairing shoddy bodywork. In my off time, I do have a small amount of experience with bodywork. I had to remake the bottom edge of the rear half door on one of my high school teacher’s trucks. It took a lot of bending and tweaking and bending back, and hammering into the exact shape. This was also done on the driver’s side front door and driver’s side cab corner. (Sadly the pictures were lost to a corrupted flashdrive) Sheet metal from an old computer case, body filler, Miller mig welder, sandable primer, Duplicolor Perfect Match Spring of 2013 

Hindsight - I am still very happy with the work I put into this truck. It was so satisfying when we were finished, and the paint had cured, to see how perfectly the newly shaped metal matched the old sections. The only thing I do wish is that I had kept in contact with this teacher, so that I could see how well my work did or didn’t hold up over the last few years.

Gravestone/Headstone - The week before Halloween, my shop teacher brought us to the cemetery behind the school and had us draw gravestones. This one was a bit challenging mostly due to the faces, and making them look angelic and peaceful rather than demonic. Pencil on Sketch Paper Original Size 9"x12" October 2011 Pathfinder RVTHS Hindsight - A bit more lineweight variation would’ve done this piece a lot of good. The lower section of the stone has good variation, but as it gets up into the body of the statue, the lines all become very heavy in places that should be thin (the olive branch) and thin where they should be thick (the leftmost outline of the robe)

Make Your Own Money - The task for this assignment was to design your own money. I had an idea in mind of money that aids people who are blind or have reduced vision. The $1, $5, and $10 would be smaller dimensionally than the $20, $50, and $100. Each bill would have a different color, much like Monopoly money but more towards pastels, and would have its own corner cut. So for example, the $1 would have no cuts, the $5 would have a partial circle, the $10 would be a 45degree angle, $20 would have stepped corners, $50 would have a full circle, and $100 would have a star. Pencil on Drawing Paper Original Size 9"x12" Spring 2014 Pathfinder RVTHS Hindsight - I wish I had finished the $20. It’s the one at mid-right, and the only one that I didn’t letter. At the time, I was so smitten with my rendering that I didn’t have the guts to erase parts so I could fill in the appropriate lettering and markings. I also wish I had used a ruler to keep the edges straight. The koala and kangaroo also need some serious help. They’re looking severely disproportionate and lacking in line weight variation.

Clock - The Orloj, Prague, Czech Republic - I had this terrible habit of wanting to take on the hardest project I can possibly give myself. Pencil on Drawing Paper Original Size 9"x12" Spring 2014 Pathfinder RVTHS Hindsight - I wish we were allowed to use tools such as rulers or compasses for these drawings. It would’ve made this drawing much more impressive. But then again, the rotation of the Orloj’s pieces aren’t concentric, so I suppose it’s hard to get things exact. There are also missing elements from the drawing, such as the outer ring of the inner piece. The background of the clock face is missing. I also had originally planned to draw the Gothic structure and statues that frame the clock, but had decided against it for a fear of losing the focus, rather than a lack of time. My lack of confidence also got the best of me.

TOTALED - This truck is one of my dad’s friends. He loves the truck to death. Before he bought it, while the truck was parked, it was smashed so hard in the rear that it was forcibly wrapped around a tree. The truck should have been totaled. But they decided to save it and have the frame straightened, cab replaced, and saved her. My dad’s friend saw some of my other work (i.e. the Peterbilt) and asked me to draw his truck. Pencil on Drawing Paper Original Size 9"x12" Spring 2014 Pathfinder RVTHS Hindsight - He was blown away by this drawing. He asked me to add color to it (the truck is bright orange with black accents and trim). But after coloring it, I ended up very displeased with it, and stuffed it into the back of a sketchbook. I want to redraw this truck, because I know damn well that I can do better.

Draw a Car or Truck - This is one of my absolute favorite pieces. Always has been since the moment I finished it, and always will be. It’s a 94 Peterbilt 379 with the flat top sleeper and a 14.6L 3406E turbo Cat motor. More commonly known as Optimus Prime. I fell in love with this truck from the moment I first saw it in 2007. Little bitty me sitting at the movies with my memere and my cousin, swooning for a big ole truck and a gorgeous sunshine yellow Camaro. As I got older, working with my dad on semi trucks, I fell more and more in love with this truck. And as soon as we were given the assignment of drawing a vehicle, I knew exactly what, or rather who, I was going to draw! Pencil on Drawing Paper Original Size 9"x12" November 2012 Pathfinder RVTHS Hindsight - Although I love this drawing and I’m still incredibly proud of it, the line weight is an issue once again. Shading is also an issue. The darkest point in the image is the shaded spot under the rear of the cab where the exhaust pipe tucks in. The next darkest point is the bottom of the grill, between it and the bumper. Better control of line weight could really improve this piece. Also a better understanding of chrome and how things reflect off of it.
