Dialogue Formatting:

I’ve been working with a beta reader for a project of mine who pointed out something regarding the way I format dialogue.

It’s not a traditional way of writing prose (it’s a personal choice) but I like to give my dialogue sections a ‘button’ consisting is a single line or sentence that I don’t indent after a line of dialogue. I don’t like the way a paragraph looks when you indent after a quotation for whatever reason. Am I alone in this?

It won’t look the same on a tumblr post, but I have an example of what I mean below:

“Are you serious?” Matt asked

“Deadly so,” Gail replied.

Matt sat in his seat and sighed.

“Is there any way to stop it?”

“No,” Gale said. “If there was, I would’ve done it.”

“Then what can we do?”

But Gail didn’t have an answer.

Is this something I should change?

It’s fine, don’t change anything

It’s disgusting, don’t ever do it again

Careful with “Beta Readers”

Just jumped on Tumblr today looking to find fellow writers by joining communities. Not sure if this is common knowledge, but I’ve noticed commenters and posters claiming to be ‘beta readers’. These profiles are often newly created with AI avatars and backgrounds that seem to be preying on unsuspecting writers to steal work. Make sure to check accounts before sending anything. Check for AI avatars and banners, as well as newly created profiles. Stay aware and happy writing!
