[`now that she explains it, he feels a little foolish.] Yeah, that does make more sense, I guess. [`he laughs lightly, rifling his hair out of habit before leaning back on his hands.]
[`he’s glad she enjoyed the meal; he enjoyed enough of it himself that he doesn’t feel like moving now. it’s a lazy sort of afternoon, warm with a slight breeze. the trees overhead keep the sun out of their eyes. he wonders how long Midori plans to stay out here – wonders if she’ll resume her training or leave it forgotten for the day, now that he’s here.]
[`he should have known she’d have something to say about his confession. but apart from the hint of a frown that crosses her face, there’s nothing to worry about. her advice is actually helpful.]
Huh… no, I haven’t really done that. I mean, I had to learn the walking-on-water thing ages ago. Done a bit of combat like that, but really… [`he racks his brain, coming up with nothing–] Nah, I don’t think I’ve ever done ninjutsu like that. You really think it would help?
[`You really think I could do it?]
[`he’d never confess to their other teammate that he doubts his abilities this much. he doesn’t know if Yuuto would insult him, or try to help. somehow the second might even make him feel worse. but Midori has never been so intimidating.]
We should try that some time, honestly. If you want to, I mean.
[`listening to her explanation of puppeteer jutsu, his eyes widen.] Man… you really know how to do that? Sounds hard. [`now that he’s thinking about it, it’s even more impressive than he’d initially realized.] I think you might be one of the few in Konoha that knows the first thing about how that works. [`he couldn’t hide his amazement if he tried.] To keep it that thin and not lose connection? [`he shakes his head slowly, trying to imagine splitting his attention in that many directions.] I wish I was better at stuff like that. [`after a pause, he has to smile.] Guess there’s only one way to get there, huh?
{ she packages the bento back up in its cloth bundle and gets up to put it in her bag. while there, she packs up her small amount of notes }
I'll wash this bento and bring it back to you.
{ she closes the distance between them and places her hands on her hips, energized and determined }
We can definitely try either one of those today, if you're up for it. I have a small puppet at home you could practice with. Its super easy once you get the hang of it.
{ sensing that Iro might be too embarassed to try it out in front of her she hastily added }
You can even take the puppet home if you want. Do it on your own time!
{ she smiles wide and looks up at the gorgeous sky }
I think it'll help. You wont get better at chakra control unless you practice, but you already knew that.
midori-aburame:
{ she carefully considers what part of the bento to start at; finally deciding on the rice. she has a whole mouthful by the time she registers that Iro has asked her a question. she hastily swallows her portion }
Nani…? Oh.
{ she nods to her pile of notes further up the riverbank }
I was looking for some water bugs to use for surveillance training. I want to be prepared if we ever have to track someone through water or map out a river with those underwater bombs people put to blow up boats.
{ the rice is almost gone now and she turns her attention towards the vegetables cut into little shapes }
I thought now would be a good time to come here, since everyone else is either in class or on missions… How did you know I’d be here, by the way?
[`he listens to her explanation, quiet for once. he never would have thought of that. but then again, he isn’t an Aburame. he feels a little guilty when he remembers how he used to think of the clan, before befriending one of them. the classic childish response – bugs, gross! he knows better now. seeing all the innovative ways his teammate uses her clan jutsu, always modifying and experimenting to suit her needs and abilities, he can’t help but be in awe.]
Wow. [`he snatches another bite, leaving the best bits for her – even he knows it’d be rude to do otherwise.] Can you really train them to do that? Jeez. I have trouble getting Haru to listen to me and she’s specially bred for ninjutsu and everything. I can’t imagine trying to reason with a bug. Can’t even bribe them with treats.
[`she asks how he knew she’d be here and in his mind’s eye he sees it all – his stop at the academy, the swing past the Aburame compound to ask if anyone’s seen her, the training ground he tried before this one. he grins.] Lucky guess. [`she’s right – everyone seems occupied today. Yuuto is nowhere to be found, which annoys him. everything about Yuuto annoys him. but he doesn’t have to think about that now.]
Training on our day off… you really go all out. [`he kicks at a clump of dirt, disintegrating it.] I should probably be doin’ that too. Sensei says I need to work on chakra control. [`he doesn’t mention that his mother says the same thing; he’s not supposed to talk about those lessons, the same ones Hinata received from Hiashi before he decided Hanabi made a more suitable heir. he’s not supposed to talk about them, so naturally, that’s all he wants to do. he hates secrets.]
{ she giggles at the image of an exasperated Iro trying to bribe his dog with treats }
Yeah. I dont really train them in the traditional sense. Its closer to an agreement made between two parties. I offer a portion of my chakra to the bugs in exchange for their cooperation during my time of need.
{ she finishes up the rest of the bento, saving the cherry tomato for last. The comment about chakra control makes her frown slightly. she had the feeling that Iro's control wasnt the best, but it wasnt bad enough to warrant extra training, was it? }
Well... have you tried that one exercise where you fight exclusively on water? Apparently the constant shifting of the water plus the fight is supposed to help you conserve and dispense chakra more evenly since you have to keep yourself standing upright and execute jutsus at the same time.
{she blushes a slight red as she has a flashback to a training session with ther father years ago detailing that exact situation. she couldnt keep up the chakra connection and fell face first into the hot spring and sank like a rock }
Theres also one that I picked up from one of the ninja ambassadors from Suna. They have those puppets, you know? And they use chakra strings to manipulate them. The control part comes in when you have to maintain the connection, but have the string as thin as possible so its invisible.
{ she shakes her head and pops the tomato into her mouth, smiling a little as she bites down on it }
[`he’s already grinning by the time she shakes the package. he doesn’t answer her first question, nods to the second.]
[`training forgotten, she sits right down on the ground where they’ve fallen more times than Iro could count. at the sight of his mother’s handiwork, she’s appropriately impressed.] Hey, it’s no trouble. It’s, like, her specialty.
[`he’d figured she would eat it now. he hadn’t counted on her offering to share. he doesn’t take any time at all to consider the offer.] Really? [`he settles down beside her and nabs a piece of garnish, crunching it loudly.] Thanks. [`the wind in the trees is the only sound to be heard; it’s a rare afternoon that they have these grounds all to themselves.] What were you doing out here anyway? Anything cool?
{ she carefully considers what part of the bento to start at; finally deciding on the rice. she has a whole mouthful by the time she registers that Iro has asked her a question. she hastily swallows her portion }
Nani...? Oh.
{ she nods to her pile of notes further up the riverbank }
I was looking for some water bugs to use for surveillance training. I want to be prepared if we ever have to track someone through water or map out a river with those underwater bombs people put to blow up boats.

Justyna Karamuz, matcha chawan
[`he wavers on the edge of the training field, where the trees overhead cast the deepest shadow. he almost doesn’t want to disturb her, but the package in his hands is perishable, and he doesn’t have the heart to deliver something his mom made at anything less than its freshest.]
Midori-chan! [`he calls out and steps into the light.] I know I’m a little late, but… [`holds out the box to her and smiles, hoping his chagrin doesn’t ruin the overall effect.] Happy birthday!
{ startled, she whips her head towards the sudden noise }
Oh... Iro? { she gets up from her crouched position by the river bank and dusts her knees off before turning to look wide eyed at the package being offered to her } Is that...? You didn't have to. { She takes it with a growing smile and shakes it a little } What is it? Can I open it now?
{ she doesnt wait for a reply and plops down on the grass. she carefully unties the cloth holding the box together and lifts the lid, revealing a beautifully made bento. she squeals in delight } Oh its so cute! Thank you so much! { her smile grows fond as she really looks at the gift; surprised that Iro bothered to bring her something at all let alone something so nice. she pulls out the chopsticks that came with it and grins }
Wanna help me eat it?
