George bit his lip, watching the buildings slide past, calculating distances, times, variables. The traffic was already thickening, Thursday afternoon crawling toward evening, and Lewis's place was twenty minutes in good conditions, which these were not. They'd lose forty minutes round trip minimum, leaving barely an hour, and an hour suddenly felt like nothing, like less than nothing, like a cruel joke.

He looked at Lewis.

The man glanced over, caught his expression, and his mouth did that thing, the slow curve, the flash of understanding, the heat that banked in his dark eyes.

“What are you up to, pretty?”
