In the chess player class, is everyone supposed to represent specific chess pieces? Seeing Levi on a throne with a crown made me wonder. If so, do you know who represents what?

In the Wings of Counterattack chess player class, everyone is actually representing a different chess move/situation. The game did a wonderful job in picking out the moves/situation and they are really well thought out. It feels like the game wrote meta about the characters. 

As to their meaning, I don’t think I can explain it as well as someone who has expertise in chess so I’m literally just copying and pasting from the chess wikipedia pages here. Some of these descriptions are really just making me grin. 

Levi is the double check and it’s a very powerful move in chess.

 A double check is a check delivered by two pieces simultaneously. 

Mikasa is the perpetual check.

Perpetual check is a situation in which one player can force a draw by an unending series of checks. Such a situation typically arises when the player who is checking cannot deliver checkmate; while failing to continue the series of checks gives the opponent at least a chance to win.

Eren is a brilliant move.

 A brilliant move is just that, a well executed and thought out move. 

Bertolt is initiative position in the game. 

Initiative in a chess position belongs to the player who can make threats that cannot be ignored. He thus puts his opponent in the position of having to use his turns responding to threats rather than making his own. A player with the initiative will often seek to maneuver his pieces into more and more advantageous position as he launches successive attacks.

Reiner is the discovered attack.

A discovered attack is an attack revealed when one piece moves out of the way of another Discovered attacks can be extremely powerful, as the piece moved can make a threat independently of the piece it reveals. Like many chess tactics, they succeed because the opponent is unable to meet two threats at once.

Jean is a knight fork. 

In chess, a fork is a tactic whereby a single piece makes two or more direct attacks simultaneously. Most commonly two pieces are threatened, which is also sometimes called a double attack.

Annie is a bayonet attack opening.

This opening is noted for being very sharp and dynamic. It has become incredibly popular in counterattacking King’s Indian Defense. 

Erwin is a Zugzwang, which is German for “obligation to move.”

Zugzwang is a term used for a position in which whoever has the move would obtain a worse result than if it were the opponent’s turn to play. A player is said to be “in zugzwang” when any possible move will worsen his position. The term is also used in combinatorial game theory, where it means that it directly changes the outcome of the game from a win to a loss, but the term is used less precisely in games such as chess. Putting the opponent in zugzwang is a common way to help the superior side win a game, and in some cases, it is necessary in order to make the win possible.

Hanji is King’s Indian Defense.

King’s Indian Defense is a very common and strong defense from black that looks to fortify his king side safety and then counter attack white’s central control of the board. This is not an aggressive defense from black but still very effective and seen quite often at high level play.

Armin is Blackburne’s Mate.

Blackburne’s mate is a bishop and knight checkmate pattern that is rarely used in the game. Joseph Henry Blackburne, the creator of the move, once crushed an opponent in 17 moves with this check pattern. He was appropriately nicknamed “Black Death.”

The high school au is lit af and i need more of your hc for it

this is actually a great opportunity to bring up the fact that when i was teaching my underclassman how to sing today and i explained how to project lower notes she was just like “nani the fuck” bc you know my school is full of WEEBS and honestly since like armin is apparently “into japanese anime” in isayama’s high school au i’m pretty sure that’s absolutely 10/10 something he would say

that being said, being a high schooler i have Too Many headcanons for this au like

if eren and jean were both in band, they would both be trumpet players. there is no getting around this fact.

i actually have an entire school band au squirreled away w/mod pineapple so this is honestly a can of worms for another day

armin would absolutely drown himself in like five aps, an honors class that doesn’t have an ap version, and a seventh period and somehow still pull straight a’s

he’d stay up until like three in the morning every night to do it but he’d do it bc honestly some kids are witches like that

it’s either this, or he takes like like two aps and everything else regular but all the regular kids bow to him because you know smart kid in a class full of meatheads. and sometimes smart kids just don’t get good grades.

on the note of hange setting off the fire alarm at least once every year, every teacher meeting someone makes some sort of joke/comment about not letting fire or anything remotely combustible near hange and some new teacher doesn’t get it until the 104th tells them

reiner would be meathead bara boy who somehow restores everyone’s school spirit for like five minutes before everyone’s dead inside again

and also since he’s apparently in football he’d be the cause of a lot injuries because “they have fragile bones”

the three walls get turned into three high schools under one district

like i don’t care that it’s technically called shingeki high. this makes more sense to me. why would a district only have one high school

the 104th have a lot of banter with the janitor levi after school. he chides them for not cleaning up after themselves but they like his poop jokes

connie would bring a duffel bag everywhere and pretend to be in track but in actuality he’s just reselling hot cheetos and stuff for cash

sasha is another one of these food dealers, and she sells bagels bc bagels are in high demand, yo

annie seems like an ap chem kind of girl to me and she’d secretly be like a god at it or something 

at the same time, she would probably run a secret underground fight club in which she kicks ass

armin would organize a naruto run. he just would.

historia pretend christa is her real name until an obnoxious teacher just outs her bc some teachers are just assholes

a lot of students are convinced that petra and oulo are married despite having different last names for multiple reasons, though they both insist that they are not married to each other

are they though? who knows.

eren would forget to pay for the sat and almost end up not getting into college because of it

since a lot of clubs have banquets at the end of the season where seniors give gifts to underclassmen and vice versa, sasha would probably receive a lot of potatoes her freshman year at whatever club banquets she attends

armin, the weeb club president, would absolutely convince the principal to let them throw a maid cafe in which half the guys cross-dress as maids

at some point during high school, connie and sasha start digging up a rock they find during lunch only to find it’s connected to another rock, and another rock…. 

that would probably be how the 104th met because they all got curious about this rock connie and sasha are digging up and damn they wanna dig up the rock too because hell yeah it’s a giant rock

and then when they finally dig up the rock they get reiner to parade it around the school while ymir just freaking yells but then the narcs are like “dude what’s that that’s so cool” and they call the principal over to see it bc it’s so cool

but then the principal calls in a truck and the truck takes the rock away even though the rock is wayyy too small for the truck and then everyone is sad but hey friendships were formed around digging up that rock. rip rock

anyway that’s already a lot. you can bet your bottom dollar that yes, most all these are things i or someone at my school has done. especially the rock. that was something i did in sixth grade.

While i was reading chapter 98, i couldn’t help but feel a little sad and and heartbroken at Gabi’s naivety.

In Gabi’s  the marley will acknowledge her and her people if they proved themselves during battle and show them their worth as soldiers. Thats why she has risked her life whenever she is out on the front lines, because she truly believes that if she proves to the marley that she is a capable tool of war for her to use, then maybe she will pave away a future in which the nation will grant her people basic human rights and treat them as actual human beings. She even goes so far as to say that if the Marley gathers all of the support from all of the other nations to their cause, they will be on “Their” side. She still thinks that her people and the marley are all in this together, and that as long as her nation views her in such high regard as a weapon, nothing will come to harm to her and her people.

But the truth of the matter is, The Marley have no intention of granting such a wish to the eldians in first place. It doesn’t matter if they go out and act as weapons for them to use, or if they put themselves out into the fires of hell and proclaim their undying loyalty to their country. To them, the eldians aren’t even human enough to garner that kind of sympathy. And it sucks because we have this kid who has been so brainwashed into believing that if she becomes a necessary tool for war then there’s a possibility for a bright future for her people and their lives could turn out for the better.

Gabi doesn’t really realize that the Marley have no intention creating a foundation for her people’s future. She’s naive in a sense that this will turn out all right just as long as she and her people prove their worth, which in turn will make the Marley see them as actual human beings and not devils. Which is definitely not the case because we’ve seen how this country views the eldians. Unless their entire political structure shifts dramatically, nothing will change no matter how much Gabi wants to believe. 

And the reason behind it is because even their very leader is creating hate towards the eldians inf front of all these world leaders. 

While i was reading Will’y speech, i couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread and malicious intent behind his words. He constantly uses the term “ devil” or “evil” to describe the eldians. It’s clear to me that what willy is trying to do is having all of the other nations by his side so that the country can prosper and survive. And how will he do that? Well, why not have the entire world at your side by creating a common enemy who everyone already hates. If has the whole world at his side, why would he need the eldians in the first place?

I feel like this change that Gabi is talking about is something that will lead towards tragedy and heartbreak. And we all know how notorious snk is with those themes

*Death flags intensifies* Some big changes involve many deaths are going to happen, but remember Isayama has stated that he would focus on Gabi’s development through Reiner’s eyes, I have feelings that Gabi will survive, but she may switch sides and against Marley in the end. I would love to see Gabi realize that staying loyal to the marley won’t achieve anything for her people and switch sides to Paradise. Like that would be awesome development in my opinion.
