The secret to super productive gardening is taking the time now to plan strategies that will work for your garden. Here are seven high-yield strategies gleaned from gardeners who have learned to make the most of their garden space.
Mighty Fine Gardens

Each tower can grow 20-30 plants in a space about the size of your hat. "Fill and Forget" features will allow beginners to grow like master gardeners. To know more, visit us at: http://www.mightyfinegardens.com Â
Organic seeds for organic gardens
Before you begin purchasing seeds and deciding on what you’d like to plant, you need to both establish goals for your garden as well as learn about how to effectively avoid low quality seeds and plants. Is your garden intended to feed you and your family for months at a time?Â
If so, it still may be beneficial to start with a smaller garden at first to practice your technique. Regardless of the size, it is pertinent that you are using the right seeds. It is preferable that you purchase high quality certified organic seeds that are not genetically modified.
Grow an organic garden all year
It is possible to grow an organic garden all year if you have a sufficient light source for an indoor garden. Plants need plenty of light in order to grow properly and there are bulbs that can be purchased to provide indoor gardens with the appropriate amount of light to have them thrive and produce a fruitful bounty.
How to choose soil for your Organic Garden?
Have your soil tested. At the very least, know what the pH is and whether it’s quick draining sand, hard baked clay, rock ledge or something in between.
Watch for sun exposure patterns.
Call the Master Gardeners at your local Cooperative Extension office and ask for a list of plants that are recommended for your area.
Put plants where they will be happy. A plant grown in inhospitable conditions will demand more and more attention.
Organically-grown foods... much tastier and more nutritious
One of the best benefits of organic gardening is that organically-grown food has no cancer-causing pesticide residues or unnatural genetic patterns. Pesticides do not completely wash off produce. Every woman in the US still has traces of DDT in her breasts, even though it was banned here in 1972. But many other pesticides have been developed to take its place, including the new “systemic” ones.
Systemic pesticides are applied to the soil and are taken up by plant roots to become part of the plant itself, in sufficient dosage to kill the insects that chew on the plant. The same poisonous plant that we then eat. Studies are now pointing to this as cause of the honeybee die off. Organically-grown food not only avoids all these problems, but is much tastier and more nutritious.
IMPROVED Soapy Water Insecticide Spray: Dawn Dish Soap
Use Dawn dish soap for a soapy water insecticide that really works on sucking insects like stink bugs, aphids and spider mites. It kills the insects in seconds and is inexpensive, easy to apply and very effective.
RECIPE:
Two teaspoons of Dawn hand dish soap (NOT anti-bacterial)
One quart of water
Instruction: Add soap to water and mix lightly. Spray on top and bottom of leaves while insects or eggs are present. Rinse after a few minutes. Apply early morning or early evening when sun is don't shining directly on plants.
Does Eating Organic Foods Make A Difference?
When researchers compared the levels of pesticide breakdown products in the bodies of children who eat organic and conventional diets, they found children who eat mostly organic foods carry fewer pesticides in their bodies.Â
By eating food produced organically or without pesticides, not only will you be reducing the amount of pesticide in your body, you will be helping create a better environment for other people, the planet, and future generations.

Try growing something
We’re really all walking, talking chemical experiments. Except it’s not to win the science fair in junior high, I mean Middle School. It’s time to change the scenario, again. Back to the future, back to the garden.Â
Try growing something. Anything. You’ll really like it. I promise. It will awaken the farmer gene that is in all of us, buried under the I pad and Twitter genes, that have apparently taken over.

Edible landscapes coming to a yard near you!
California has always been a little ahead of things in other parts of the country. Lettuce instead of grass? Existing lawns were the first plants that state regulators urged Californians to rip out for water-saving purposes. Now they’re after lawns that haven’t even been planted.
The California Water Commission is considering new rules to slash the amount of water that can be used by landscapes surrounding newly built homes, businesses and schools. The rules include limiting new landscapes to only 25% of grass.
Changes would take effect December 1. And this may ultimately impact how California homeowners are imagining their home landscapes.
In the LA Times, Esther Margulies, an instructor in the landscape architecture program at USC, says, "It will be a far more interesting place than this monoculture of grass. The attraction to subdivisions with pristine lawns has changed." Wouldn't you rather have a vertical garden full of delicious veggies to eat, instead of a lawn to mow on your day off?
Mighty Fine idea.

Finding safe, non-toxic pesticides for the garden
Finding safe, non-toxic pesticides for the garden that actually work can be a challenge. We all want to protect the environment, our families and our food, but most non-chemical products available have limited effectiveness. Neem oil foliar spray has been shown to be most useful when applied to young plant growth.Â
The oil has a half life of three to 22 days in soil but only 45 minutes to four days in water. It is nearly non-toxic to birds, fish, bees and wildlife, and studies have shown no cancer or other disease causing results from its use. This makes neem oil very safe to use if applied properly.
Mighty Finers!...want to set up a tomato tower?
A tomato tower is a 2 pot tower that gives tomatoes enough room to grow down as vines, or staked up if you prefer. Follow all the directions for placing a root pot on the bottom of the conduit (after driving in the conduit).Â
Cut a 34” PVC sleeve (1 inch schedule 40- the thin wall type) and slide it down the conduit. Place the Gro-pot on top of the PVC sleeve. Cut a piece of PVC pipe 23” long and slide it down the conduit. Place the 2nd gro-pot on top of the PVC sleeve. Finish with the “T” fitting and tube, just like the other towers.
