Changes are coming, a new great danger hangs over all humanity.

My animation-winner in the FASHION FILM FESTIVAL, 2017

The inspiration behind this animation was the beauty of the artist’s native city, Kyiv. While the entire piece is a journey around the most memorable Kievan districts, the vague brushstrokes and the constant change of viewpoint evoke the topics of flowing time, constant change of the environment, and memories that preserve a lost moment for the eternity. The dramatic transformation of the main heroine into a strong bird and back is reminescent of ancient Ukrainian archetypes of femininity and in the same time hint at freedom from stereotypes, the freedom achieved through dance.

Dreamcatcher

“The Dreamcatcher”, 2017, is the first work of the series of highly symbolic surrealistic paintings “The Unknown”. The series explores the artist’s interest in alternative reality, its depiction in local legends, religious views and psychological theories. The artist’s acute sensitivity to spiritual matters leads him to show the usual and easily visible alongside the invisible, the unknown, be it feared or longed for.

The artist perceives human soul and idea as divine and depicts it as a golden figure in the center of the painting. He calls the painting “The Dreamcatcher” and we see a huge dreamcatcher above the human figure. This suggests the person – or rather its soul or even a personified feeling or idea – is in a state of sleep. What exactly the figure personifies is left to the impression of the viewer.

In art, lamassu were depicted as hybrids, winged bulls or lions with the head of a human male. There are still surviving figures of lamassu in bas-relief and some statues in museums, most notably in the British Museum in London, Musée du Louvre in Paris, National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Pergamon Museum in Berlin and the Oriental Institute, Chicago. They are generally attributed to the ancient Assyrians. The lamassu is at the opening of the city, so that everyone who enters sees it. From the front it appears to be standing and from the side walking. This was intentionally done to make it seem powerful. The lamassu in real life is very tall. In this case the lamassu is being used as a symbol of power.
