(it's par for the fucking course, really, from what you've come to know of him over the last two months that you've been saddled as the u20 ice hockey team's newest social media manager.)
glancing between the phone in your hand and the trail of red that's now dripping down his scruffy jaw, you wave a hand for emphasis.
"you just won your fifth straight shutout."
he nods, still smiling as he wipes the back of his hand over his mouth. it only serves to smear the blood across his cheek.

"you need to film a statement for socials. fans will want to see it."
oliver runs his other hand through his damp, sweaty hair, helmet left discarded somewhere on one of the benches behind him.
(it's mildly infuriating—the way you swear you can still catch a whiff of his cologne right now, even after sixty minutes on the ice.)
he crosses his arms, head tilted to the side in that slightly cocky, amused way of his that you've become all too familiar with. "use me as you please, sweetheart."
doing everything in your power to resolutely ignore the way the pet name sounds in his deep, teasing voice, you groan in annoyance and throw a towel at his face.
(you can't decide if this is better or worse than the time he laughed the entire time you had to nearly manhandle him back into his jersey when you told him you couldn't post a video of him shirtless.)
"can you at least—"
oliver steps into your space suddenly, the white towel now stained red from wiping it across his face. fingers brushing against yours as he gently takes your phone out of your hands to film himself, he murmurs, "come on, a little blood never hurt anybody."
Can people please stop talking shit on Nii-sensei and complaining about other characters getting attention and backstories? Like, it’s my favorite thing when an MC isn’t the only character that matters in a story. It makes the world-building that much more immersive and interesting.
And also, most of the other characters’ relationships and backstories in Wind Breaker have a special significance to Sakura’s growth as a character too. So, like, he is getting attention even when it’s not direct. Some people just get so fixated on the surface level that they can’t seem to look any deeper, and it’s really disrespectful to the author when they act like Sakura gets no focus whenever he not only is involved in every part of the story on some level but is always out there actively bringing everyone together throughout the story.
No, we don’t know much about his past yet. Yet. Because he’s the main character, and we need to build up to that. He still has a lot of growth to do before he can feel comfortable sharing that part of himself with others. It would be weird if the story jumped straight into his super personal trauma so early on. And before the other characters too? Nah. Sakura needs to hear/experience others’ stories and struggles first. He needs to help them before he can realize that it’s okay to share his own trauma and seek help himself.
But the story needs to build up to that point.
Which means we gotta be patient for Sakura’s backstory. This is a story about his growth and his healing and finding a place of belonging. If everything fell into place right away, the story would be over.
So just enjoy the story as it is? Like, it’s a super well-written series with really great character relationships. And Sakura is at the center of it all, in one way or another. As is, the story still has a long way to go. Please stop trying to rush it to its end and just trust that Nii-sensei will give us what we want in due time.

a/n: one of the many lovely suggestions I received, and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to try out miniature scenario format writing. critiques/tips are welcome and appreciated and I hope y’all enjoy it!

“just a word from the wise, kaji; this process tends to go a lot faster when you stay still.”
kaji responded to your jab with little more than a glower, though its sharpness was dulled by the subtle swelling along his right eyebrow. a few moments of silence passed before he relaxed his shoulders and stilled his posture.
“I didn’t ask you to do this, y’know.” kaji grumbled around his sucker, wincing at the firm press of the peroxide-soaked cotton ball against the open cut through his eyebrow. you kept your eyes from wandering down to his lips, knowing damn well that the sight of them wrapped around the sucker would completely derail your focus from the current task.
“you didn’t, but I want to do this. you got roughed up because of me — I think it’s only fair.”
guilt burned low in your gut at the reminder — had you been paying better attention, that stupid little street brawl never would have broken out; and kaji wouldn’t be sitting on your kitchen table, bruised and cut up.
“what are you, stupid?” kaji hissed lowly, words slightly muffled by his sucker. “those assholes didn’t have any right to start somethin’ with you.”
your heart fluttered in your chest, which had started to warm beneath kaji’s sentiment. kaji had always been this way when it came to you; protective to a near idiotic fault. the disgruntled man you’d bumped into hadn’t even raised a hand towards you, but kaji was quick to interfere long before he even had the chance. you had a small suspicion it had something to do with the fact that the man had referred to you as a ‘little bitch.’
it was stupid and ridiculously testosterone-fueled, but kaji’s protectiveness of you still left you feeling warm and fuzzy.
“be that as it may, you still got hurt because of me.” you quipped back, removing the cotton wad and tossing it into the trashcan. you rummaged through the plastic kit next to kaji and plucked out a small bandage. kaji kept his eyes lowered as you placed the bandage over the cut, smoothing it down gently with the pads of your fingers.
“alright, done with that one,” you announced, observing your work. you’d gotten quite skilled at this kind of thing, you dully noted. that probably wasn’t a good thing. “okay, lose the sucker. your lip is busted and I need to clean it.”
“no way, I just opened this one.” kaji rebutted, sealing his lips tighter over the sucker. you rolled your eyes with an exasperated fondness.
“I didn’t say you have to throw it away. just take it out.” you reiterated, and kaji glanced at you. with a sigh he pulled the sucker out and held it between his fingers, twisting it within them as he murmured, “hurry up with it, then.”
you smiled softly and pulled a fresh cotton-ball from the kit. you soaked it with some peroxide and then pressed it against the cut on kaji’s lip. he hissed in response but remained otherwise still.
“it’ll only take a moment. this one isn’t as bad.” you reassured him, only getting a soft grunt in response. within a few seconds you’d managed to clean away the dry and clotted blood along the cut, relieved to notice that it really was only superficial. though, kissing kaji would be a bit difficult until it healed, sadly.
you disposed of the dirty cotton-ball and began closing up your kit; by now kaji was wriggling against the table top, clearly impatient for the process to be over and done with. kaji was always a bit disgruntled during the whole ordeal, but he let you do it anyway — you wondered if it was more for him or for you. either way, you appreciated it.
kaji slipped off of the table and raised his hand to slip the sucker back into his mouth, but you shot your hand out and caught his wrist before he could. kaji sent you a soft glare of confusion, which you ignored, and you put his hand down and out of the way so you could lean up and close your lips against his.
you could feel the split against your own lip, a gap within the softness of his bottom lip, and held the kiss for a few moments. when you pulled away to look into his eyes, your stomach churned pleasantly at the haze that had entered them; his lips were still parted slightly, and his breaths were a bit short and puffy. you released his wrist and smiled softly.
“thank you for defending me.” you whispered, causing kaji’s face to light up like a christmas tree. god, for such a strong, temperamental man, he sure was adorable.
“really, you don’t have to do this.” sakura grumbled, eyes focused on everything except your face that was inches away from his. his cheeks were flushed prettily, and his lips had formed into that signature pout that you’d come to love.
“well, are you going to stop me?” you challenged, swiping bicolored bangs away from sakura’s forehead to assess the small cut there. sakura remained silent, with his body tensed up and shoulders hiked — but the bashful expression on his face told you everything. so cute.
“it won’t take long, I promise.” you soothed, shoving back the insatiable urge to tease him a bit. sakura couldn’t take much in terms of that, and you really didn’t want to deal with combustion on top of cuts and bruises. sakura merely grunted in response.
you fell silent as you rummaged through your kit, pulling out the various things you’d need; a bottle of peroxide, bandages, a few cotton-balls, and that one small bottle of pain relievers you kept stowed away within it.
by now, cleaning and tending to wounds were second nature to you — you could probably perform the process in your sleep, so your movements were relaxed as you soaked a cotton-ball with peroxide and cleaned around the cut with it. sakura barely made any noise as you did so, but he did flinch back subtly from the sting, which pulled a small apology from your lips.
the silence was surprisingly comfortable as you worked, and by the time the time you’d cleaned and bandaged every cut you could see, even sakura had fallen into a sense of comfort. his shoulders drooped slightly and the tension was gone from his body — the sight of him strangely reminded you of a cat curled up on its owners lap, comfortable and warm. as much as sakura grumbled about it, he always seemed more relaxed after you patched him up. and that could really only mean one thing — he secretly liked it.
thinking back on all the times he initially rejected your affection only to melt back into it made your heart hurt. sakura must have been so starved for any form of positive affection, more damaged than you could have imagined from years off of sustaining himself on negative attention — a memory floated up to the forefront of your mind; the morning sakura had slept in and you’d entered his small apartment only to find him curled around the pillow you had gifted to him, hugging it close as if it were some sort of lifeline.
he had been so alone for so long — he must have been scared to admit how much he craved your attention.
“hey, sakura,” you called softly, capturing his lidded gaze with your own. “you really like it when I do this, don’t you?”
sakura’s eyes widened and he flushed all the way to his neck. his lips opened and closed on broken-up stuttered words, all of which seemed to be alluding to a denial, but he simply couldn’t figure out how to push them through to make a complete sentence.
his reaction had you simultaneously giggling and feeling a bit bad, so you reached forward and cupped his bandaged cheek.
“it’s okay if you do, sakura. no one else has to know, ‘kay?” you whispered, heart fluttering at the subtle way sakura nuzzled into your palm. “it’ll just stay between us; like a secret.” you added with a soft smile.
sakura seemed at a loss for words; but the way he looked at you, as if you quite literally hung the moon, had you swooning on your feet and weak in the knees. unable to resist his pretty face any longer, you leaned forward and captured his lips. sakura responded immediately, a hand flying up to cup over yours on his cheek.
heat flared through your body and you had to pull away far too son for your liking — you had only meant this as a kiss of comfort, and if you didn’t steer things in a different direction, you very well ran the risk of having to re-bandage cuts again.
“I’ll patch you up, always,” you breathed softly against his lips, pulling a full body shudder from sakura. “as long as you want me to — for as long as you’ll have me — I’ll do it.”
with the way sakura surged back in to kiss you, you had a sinking suspicion that he didn’t much care if he reopened his wounds.
“y’know, you really should think about becoming a nurse.”
you snorted at the familiar jest and pressed your finger into the bandage on umemiya’s cheek bone. oh, this was a familiar course of events.
“ouch!” he exclaimed, flinching back from the sudden explosion of pain. you smirked lazily and reached down to pull out another bandage. you had already cleaned and sterilized the superficial wounds on umemiya’s face, and all that was left was securing a bandage over them.
umemiya knocked his knee into your thigh with a pout. “why’d’ya do that?” he whined, reminding you of a toddler rather than an eighteen year old man.
“you always make that joke.” you stated simply, soothing the small bandage over the bridge of his nose. umemiya’s white brows scrunched together and his lips pursed.
“but it isn’t a joke. you’d make an amazing nurse.” umemiya defended, prompting you to shake your head.
“ume, i have no interest in being a nurse. you know that.” you replied flatly, leaning back slightly to scrutinize your work. the bandages were snug against his skin, and not skewed in any awkward directions. the only thing you couldn’t fix was the purpling bruise just above his jaw. he was still so handsome, though, even when he was all bruised and bandaged.
long fingers curled into your clothed hips. using the leverage of his grip umemiya pulled you closer and caged your thighs with his own. you stumbled slightly from umemiya’s sudden pull, and your hands instinctively dropped to his shoulders for stabilization. umemiya was sitting on the bench whereas you were standing between his legs, giving you the vantage point of being slightly taller than him. the position was actually quite… intimate.
“I still think you’d be amazing at it,” umemiya whispered, his voice just slight deeper than it was before. “not to mention, the outfit would look absolutely sexy on you.”
heat rushed to your cheeks and you scoffed away the sudden bout of nervousness, playing it off with a slap to umemiya’s shoulder.
“of course your mind would go there, you perv.” you scolded, desperately screaming at your heart to just slow down. heat was radiating off of umemiya’s body, the scent of his cologne so much sharper in your close vicinity, and the combined sensations were making your head fuzzy.
“hmm, I may be a perv, yet you still jump at every chance to fix me up,” umemiya teased. “a true, bone fide nurse, baby. absolutely no discrimination from you.”
okay, that was it, you were going to combust if he didn’t shut up. or you’d run away. or slap him.
“you would take such good care me, yeah? I’d probably lose more often just so you could patch m— ouch!”
third option it was.
his stare was soft and reverent, lidded emerald eyes glued to your face and his lips quirked in the laziest of smiles. his shoulders were slumped and his muscles were void of any tension.
at this very moment, jo togame looked like the perfect vision of a man relaxed.
which seemed odd, considering his face had been busted open and you were practically pouring peroxide in his cuts.
“how did this happen, again?” you inquired quietly, examining the wounds as best you could while simultaneously disinfecting them. none of them seemed too deep, but they had still bled a worrying amount.
“got in a fight.” togame drawled vaguely, his deep, rolling voice slithering into your ears in a serpentine way.
“yeah, I figured that much. I meant why, and with who?”
“sloooow dooown, baby. too many questions at once.” togame teased, groping near blindly with his hands until they found purchase on your hips. he attempted to pull you down into his lap, but you held fast.
“togame.” you pressed, narrowing your eyes. it was very tempting to sink into his wide, welcoming lap, but your boyfriend had just waltzed into the apartment with a busted up face and no explanation — and that required your attention and focus.
togame sighed but kept his hands on your hips. “remember that guy at the market? the one that was harassin’ you?”
your eyes widened in shock and your lips fell open.
“togame, don’t tell me you tracked him down—”
“don’t worry, baby. I didn’t track him down — he tracked me down. brought some buddies, too. guess he didn’t like that I embarrassed him.”
your irritation instantly melted to worry. you dropped your hand from the wound you were tending to in favor of cupping his cheek.
“oh my god, togame. are you—”
“I’m fine,” togame cut you off quickly. “trust me, the other guys look much worse. you don’t need to worry about me.”
you scrunched your brows together and sighed. togame was always shrugging you off like that. you supposed you could understand; togame was strong, perfectly capable of holding his own even when outnumbered. but you still hated seeing him hurt.
“heeeey,” togame drawled, as if he could hear your thoughts. his fingers dipped into your hips and his thumbs began stroking them. “if you’re all that worried about me, come on down here lemme hold you.”
you smiled softly but caved into his demands, slipping into his lap and collapsing against his chest. togame hummed and wrapped his arms around you, hooking his chin over your shoulder.
togame’s entire body melted into the couch, relaxed and fluid — well, most of his body anyway. there was a specific part of him that was beginning to stand at attention.

of course, he’s taken aback by your blatant display of affection. from the instant you’d met him, you were practically throwing yourself at him, smothering him with attention that he’d never received before.
it had been happening ever since he enrolled at furin and wandered into this strange town; handshakes, shoulder pats, head pats, choke holds, even hugs — but that was all friendly or familial affection. and, even as dense and romantically challenged as he was, sakura could tell that your affection had much deeper roots.
you were always complimenting him, bringing him handmade bentos and baked treats, slipping love letters into his pocket or hand, hugging him, and even at times, gifting him with flowers.
it was flustering and overwhelming, but for some reason, sakura didn’t find himself angry about it. affection, admiration, and attention from you felt oddly… natural. and though he would grumble and even at times demand you to knock it off, he secretly loved it — and it made him strive to be a person worthy of that affection and praise.
hajime umemiya.
oh, gods, this man finds it so endearing.
you’re so bold about it, greeting him every day with a bright smile and even the occasional gift. you’re quick to offer any and all assistance to him simply to spend more time with him (which you very readily admit). you listen intently when he rants about his plants and favorite foods, all the while doing so with this look of sheer adoration on your face — like you could listen to him talk for days and never get tired of his voice.
simply put, your brazen affection makes umemiya feel like he’s on top of the world, standing alone as the only man in the solar system. and, to you, he is. and that wasn’t going to change.
hiragi toma.
he’s flustered as shit. I mean, you like him? you? like him? it feels like a fever dream to hiragi — you’re pretty, sweet, upfront, bubbly and charismatic, and he’s — well, him.
you’re always quick to reprimand him when he looks down on himself, and then you proceed to follow it up by every single thing you like about him. you ask him on dates constantly (some he agrees to, some he’s simply too busy to attend), and you shower him affection that could, to some, be described as smothering.
but it doesn’t feel that way for hiragi. truthfully, it doesn’t take him long to fall for you. your attention and love is like a drug — one he’d happily get addicted too.
suo hayato.
is nonchalant and reciprocating on the outside — completely screaming on the inside.
suo was used to hearing girls whisper about him; about how charming and mysterious he was, how strong he was, how much they’d love to get to know him. but they’d never had the gall to attempt to — whether it was because they were too shy or too certain of rejection was lost on suo.
but you — you completely flipped the script. you were brazen, bold, and unapologetic about it. you were immediately complimenting him, immediately expressing your blatant interest with a cheery, “suo, you should go on a date with me! I think we’d get along great!”
and of course, suo wants to play off how nervous and flustered you make him — so he agrees to your dates, reciprocates your advances and compliments back, until, somewhere along the line, he’d stopped doing it just to cover up his true feelings — suo hayato, for the first time in his life, had caught legitimate feelings, and was acting on them.

boy, oh boy is he flustered. in some cases, when you offer him affection, and he’ll look at suo as if silently demanding if somehow the patched man had put you up to this.
nirei doesn’t think of himself as an attractive, pursuable man — but, as you’ve stated before, that’s something that you love about him.
you want to get to know him, not just on a friend level, but on one more intimate. his kindness and logical thinking had drawn you in, you said. his freckles remind you of constellations, and you wondered aloud if he had them anywhere else on his body (cue sakura fainting).
you bought him new notebooks. all the time. when you’d give him a new one, you’d smile at him and say, “watching you indulge in your hobby makes me happy.”
you legitimately liked him for him, and for a while, nirei struggled with that. but over time, he grew to believe in your intentions (how could he not? you were always so forward with them). and before nirei knew it, he was a taken man — and his girl was just as smitten with him as he was with her.

okay, but why?
kaji isn’t objective to your advances — he doesn’t mind them, but he also doesn’t put a lot of stock into them. upon meeting you at first, he just assumed that was your personality; after all, he’d met his fair share of people who were just naturally flirty.
but it was when you began bringing him tokens of your affection that kaji realized it was different. before he knew it, he had a large bowl full of multi-flavored suckers in his room, courtesy of you bringing him a couple new ones every day, an entire drawer full of little charms and bracelets you’d hand crafted for him — even a couple new pairs of headphones for “just in case.”

not to mention, you’re extremely pretty, and your energy levels can sometimes rival his. you indulge him in whatever activity he wants, even if it’s a little childish. when he’s with you, he feels giddy and happy, his chest lighter than ever.

you haven’t even approached him yet, but he’s already crushing. at first, he was too nervous to talk around you. the first day the two of you only swapped a couple words. togame had assumed the rest of the days would be the same, but the next morning you ran up to him as if the two of you had been friends for years.
“hey, toga! wait, can I call you toga? I like to give nicknames to the people I like!”
togame’s heart had leapt at that, but he kept his hopes low. he was sure you’d only meant it in a friendly way. togame had never been happier to be wrong.
the cute nickname was just the tip of the iceberg of your affection — it became blatantly obvious that your love language was physical touch and acts of service. you were constantly asking to accompany him whenever he went somewhere, butting into his chore of handing out sodas, amping him up before a fight and tending to his wounds afterwards.
and you were never hesitant to remind him that you liked him, that you hoped that someday explore something deeper than friendship. nearly every day.
you were perfect, in every sense of the word. and though it was difficult to believe this wasn’t just some sort of dream that he’d wake from soon, togame let himself relax and bask in your warmth in its entirety.

jo togame is absolutely enamored by the way you have to look up at him to talk to him.
it’s a consistent thing you do — you pretty much have to, considering the height difference between you two. but it never fails to make his heart skip a beat.
but, of course, you have to make it a thousand times cuter by adding your own little quirks to it; such as bouncing on the balls of your feet, or standing up on your tippy toes to ‘reach him better’, or the cute little head tilts you do when you ask a question or couldn’t quite catch his words.
but what stalled his engines, killed his brain process, and completely rewired his chemical balance was the day you surged your hands up to pull him down into a chaste kiss. even with him slightly bent to reach you, you still stood on your very tippy toes to slot your lips to his in the most comfortable way.
it lasted all of two seconds, but it was enough to leave togame feeling giddy about it for months after — and even after experiencing it hundreds of times within those few months, it still made his brain short circuit when it happened.
hajime umemiya simply adores the way you try to keep up with him.
he’s got long legs, and it’s all too easy for him to scale many feet with just a few steps — but for you, it’s an endurance battle. even umemiya’s casual strides seem more like a dash, and your legs have to work overtime to keep up with him.
he doesn’t mean to be cruel or unsympathetic; he just can’t hold back his urges at times. umemiya always feels warm when he ‘accidentally’ leaves you in the dust and you scramble to catch up to him, a pout on your lips as you loop your arms around his and force him to match your pace. it makes him feel wanted and needed — and when he’s wanted and needed by you, it’s a feeling akin to heaven.
but the day that all came to a stop was the same day that you caused him to short circuit.
umemiya was doing the same thing he normally did (usually at least once each day) and you reacted in the same way that you had each and every time; except when you looked up at him, you weren’t wearing your signature pout — instead, your brows were scrunched up and your eyes welled with fat tears.

but what suo loved the most about you was your enthusiastic optimism towards the future. your views on that were a near contrast to suo’s; suo preferred to live in the present, leave the past behind, and simply wait for the future. he felt that focusing too much on the past or the future would take away the sensation of being in the present, so he blocked both of them out in order to fully immerse himself into where he was now.
but you… you talked about the future constantly. passionately. and, contrary to most people who daydreamed about the future, you strived in your present to secure that future you were so passionate about. suo would listen to you ramble for hours on end, never losing interest or falling tired — your voice was simply magnificent.
and that was what he was doing on that particular day, sitting across from you in a quaint little resto-cafe, chin in palm and slowly stirring his quickly cooling coffee as you rambled. you were talking about interior design, something you were highly fervid about, when you said the words that made his heart skip a beat.

so, in typical umemiya fashion, he decides to take the initiative to weed out the problem before it can take true root within you.

in one instance, when umemiya had dragged you away from a very serious project you were working (stressing) on, he chose to escort you to a botanical garden.
but this wasn’t just any botanical garden — it was a botanical garden devoted to carnivorous plants.
it seemed so out of range of his normal agriculture preferences of vegetables and flowers, so you were pleasantly surprised when he was able to recite the name of every single plant within the garden plus list a variety of facts about them.
before long, your head was being stuffed so full with knowledge about the venus flytrap, cephalotus, aldrovanda, byblis, pitcher plants and various other species that all things pertaining to that project were shoved out completely.
at some point, your muscles and mind had relaxed to the soothing lullaby of umemiya’s excited droning, and you felt more comfortable than you had in days.

sugishita kyotaro ➜ you’ve never heard sugishita say so many words in one sitting. of course, they’re broken up by grunts and groans, sometimes even growls — you know he’s angry, but his deep, gravelly voice just heats you up inside. and seeing this competitive side of him shown so brazenly is pretty stimulating as well. don’t worry, despite the fact that he gets exceptionally angry during the event, he calms down pretty fast once the two of you put the game down. you’ll need to get him some food asap, though. and cuddle him subtly.
↳ agreed to go with the full understanding that you’d more than likely beat him at all the games. still gets a little ticked off, though.
nirei akihiko ➜ is outwardly gushing about how good you are at games while internally seething about how good you are at games. it isn’t that he hates that you’re better than him; he just wanted to impress you in some way. nirei doesn’t consider himself to be a man of many skills, but he sort of assumed that he’d beat you at games in the same way he beat sakura — and hoped that you’d look at him with a spark of admiration in your eyes when he did. reassure this baby, please.
ren kaji ➜ completely silent and focused on beating the shit out of you (in the game). chews more aggressively on his sucker and mashes the buttons so fast and roughly you’re lowkey scared that he’ll break them. if you try to talk to him, he’ll completely ignore you. listens to lofi beats while he games. looks super cute hunched over the game with that concentrated pout on his face.
hiragi toma ➜ you won’t know hiragi is even bothered by being beat until after about the tenth time he loses. he doesn’t yell or curse, but when he starts to get angry about it, he’ll start suggesting the two of you move onto something else (sometimes it’s another game, but most of the time he recommends grabbing some grub or something.) he thinks you don’t know what he’s doing but you do. and you think it’s absolutely adorable. hiragi gets incredibly flustered when you point out his subtle propensity to be a sore loser.
↳ honestly, he’s just vibing. has fun even when he loses. pretty skilled at games, and takes defeat pretty well. will brag and shove it in your face when he wins though, even if he only wins one game out of ten.
choji tomiyama ➜ “i win again!” this is a phrase that you hear very brokenly — and, for the most part, ‘again’ means ‘i won against you seven games ago and now i’ve won again.’ you don’t really mind that, though. choji looks so cute when he’s beaming in that way that you can’t find it within yourself to dampen it; not to mention, he always takes his defeats in stride, and the exuberant boy has a way of rubbing off on people. so, of course you simply smile and congratulate him. and wow, there’s hearts in his eyes now.
hajime umemiya ➜ truthfully, he’s not paying much attention to the game itself. his eyes are trained on you, watching the way your face lights up and your lips morph into that adorable concentrated pout. you just look as though you’re genuinely enjoying yourself, there with him and in your element, and it mesmerizes him. of course, hell use that as the excuse as to why he’s losing, but his absolute fumbling of the controls definitely a contributing factor.
↳ a goddamn menace to play against. unrealistically skilled at every single game he plays. smoothly says “beginner’s luck” every single time he wins. a nuisance (affectionate)
jo togame ➜ you honestly had no idea where the hell your laidback boyfriend even gathered the skills he has. you’ve never seen him display any sort of interest in games, not mobile, console, and certainly not arcade — but he always bested you, every. single. time. and don’t expect any mercy wins — togame won’t give them to you. even if you beg. he will, however, buy you anything you want from the arcade as a means of smoothing it over.
kiryu mitsuki ➜ he was always on his phone tapping away at some game or another — so you weren’t exactly surprised or disappointed when he continuously beat your ass. kiryu isn’t the type to brag, either, and you know he’s genuine when he tells you not to give up and that you’re doing great, but you can’t help but get pissed off about it. you want so desperately to beat him that he, irritatingly, adds in the condition that he will give you a kiss for every game you win. by the end of the afternoon, you’ve been kissed a total of three times.
suo hayato ➜ smug bastard. that’s the only way to describe suo. for anyone else, that expression on his face would be mistaken for his usual look, but you could simply feel the smugness within it. “oh, I won again. lucky me.” suo will say, reveling in the way your face colors with frustration. he loves to work you up, but he will never push past the point of no return. he knows exactly when to stop to prevent you from ignoring him for hours on end. always manages to make your anger completely evaporate with a mere kiss. will teasingly ask if you want to go another round; simply because he knows you can’t say no.

oh, he’d been waiting for this.
togame had to admit, it was a bit of a guilty pleasure of his; there was something so incredibly stimulating about watching those pretty eyes of yours sharpen to daggers, to smell the faint spark of ozone in the air, to see your petite body tense up in preparation for a fight.
it had been building ever since she showed up — togame didn’t even know her name. just some broad that arima had somehow managed to convince to show up at this thing on his arm. even though arima was her ‘date’ for the night, she’d been fluttering around togame all evening, sidling up close to him and trying to grope various parts of his body when she was sure you weren’t looking.
but you were always looking — just as togame was always looking at you.
togame wasn’t even sure why the woman kept blundering about him; he hadn’t reciprocated her advances once, nor had he given any indication that he wanted to. he’d even explicitly stated that he was taken, even pointing you out to her as a means to discourage her from any further contact. but she just wouldn’t take a hint.
the broad ignorantly sealed her fate the moment she became gutsy enough to plop herself into togame’s lap as he lounged along the tattered couch — with a move like that, there was no preventing the event that unfolded next.
the woman screeched as she was pulled roughly off of togame’s lap, landing firmly onto her ass with a loud bang — right at your feet. and, boy, were you pissed.
yells and shouts of startlement erupted around the ori, and multiple people ambled away from the source of the commotion; unwittingly creating a ring composed of human bodies.
togame leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees, distantly wishing he’d grabbed a bottle of ramune beforehand so he’d have something to occupy his hands and mouth while this whole thing went down.
“what the fu—” the woman attempted to exclaim, only for her words to be cut off by a swift foot to the jaw.
that was another thing that togame found highly stimulating — you didn’t pull your punches in a fight, opting to use punches and kicks rather than slaps or grapples. it was something togame never thought he’d find attractive in a woman until he met you.
you were completely blinded by fury at this point; you straddled the woman as she flung her arms up to cover her face from your ferocious blows. she was screaming, yelling, and pleading for help, yet you were completely silent — ooh, really, really pissed, then.
“h-hey, now, (y/n), get off of her!” arima yelled, suddenly shouldering his way through the ring of people. togame snapped his eyes towards arima and stopped his advance with a withering glare — the younger boy had a look of horror across his face, clearly wanting to rush in and save his skank of a date but not entirely willing to risk a thrashing from togame for it.
the couch dipped beside togame, and he didn’t even have to glance over to know who’d taken the spot beside him.
“hey, hey, should we stop her? she might kill the chick.” choji said, leg bouncing up and down. the small boy was practically vibrating from the hype of a fight.
togame smirked and leaned back into the cushions of the couch, lacing his fingers together over his abdomen and admiring the sight before him. damn, his girl was a badass.
“nah, not right now. I want to enjoy this for a bit longer.”
in all the time that umemiya had known you, he’d never seen you rise above the level of mild irritation — so, honestly, he just assumed that was your natural temperament.
in all actuality, umemiya had pegged you as a pacifist; you seemed to shrink away from most violence, and your eyes always darkened with sadness when you saw him or someone else sporting bruises and cuts. it was part of what made umemiya fall for you — your ability to care so deeply for others and empathize with them on levels that even he couldn’t comprehend.
but now, umemiya was slowly realizing that everyone has two sides, and all it takes is the right kind of poke to bring out the other one.
and that poke for you happened to be in the form of a group of delinquents loudly badmouthing bofurin.
“don’t be scared of furin, man, they’re just a group of chumps! they’re all pussies, dude.”
“right? I hear their leader is the biggest pussy—”
you moved too quickly for umemiya to even react.
you had left his side in an instant and barreled right into the back of the unsuspecting man, upsetting his balance and causing him to tumble face first to the pavement.
gasps erupted from passerby’s, and all umemiya could do was stare as you straddled the man’s ribs and pulled his arm behind his back — you did so at an awkward angle, twisting it up until umemiya heard a harsh snap.
the man screamed in pain and began to thrash underneath you, yelling out insults and curses. it seemed to snap the other men around him out of their stupor, and umemiya’s heart lurched when one of them advanced on you and reached his arms out. umemiya was just about to spring into action when you jumped up with lightening speed and delivered a nasty right hook to the man that had been looming over you.
he stumbled back and cradled his nose, bright red blood seeping between the gaps of his fingers.
a gruff voice called out “you stupid bitch!” and, shit, this man was burly and much larger than you — and now umemiya’s body moved before he could even process it mentally.
it all seemed to happen in a blur; within seconds the men were sprawled out on the pavement, groaning and clutching varying parts of their bodies — you and umemiya were visibly unharmed, though your breathing was rugged and shallow and there were tears glistening in your eyes.
worried that you’d somehow caught damage in the fray, umemiya rushed over to you and begin to smooth his hands along his body.
“are you alright? they didn’t hurt you, did they?”
you shook your head and blinked away the tears rapidly. when you glanced up at umemiya, your eyes still held unshed tears, but they didn’t fall as you whispered, “I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to see me like that.”
umemiya almost scoffed; the situation was almost hilarious. you — small, bubbly, petite, delicate you — just brawled against two men with the strength of a grown-ass man. and, quite strangely, it was one of the hottest things he’d seen in a long time. so why were you even apologizing?
“you have nothing to apologize for — except maybe nearly giving me a heart attack.” umemiya jested, chest lightening when a small, hearty laugh bubbled past your lips.
“yeah, yeah. I shouldn’t have jumped in like that,” you agreed, bringing a palm up to swipe away a runaway tear. “it’s just — they were looking down on bofurin, looking down on you, and I — I just couldn’t hear them do it any longer.”
umemiya couldn’t help but gush at the seams. even with the strength of a grown man, you were still you — cuddly and petite and small and holdable, and everything umemiya ever wanted.
if he squeezed you a little too hard in his arms, he couldn’t be blamed, could he?
sakura had never associated strength to a particular gender — if you were strong then you were strong, it didn’t matter what you looked like, how you talked, or even what gender you were born too.
but you had never given sakura the impression of someone who was strong. not that he considered you weak, just that he didn’t consider you to be experienced in or impartial to combat. you were a soft, gentle person, who always scrunched your nose at the sight of violence.
you were near constantly reprimanding him for the scuffles he got into (especially when it involved sugishita), and, if possible, you urged him to take a more peaceful route.
so to say he was shocked by the scene currently unfolding in front of him was an understatement — he was positively floored; not just by the fact that you were fighting, and fighting good, but that you were doing it in his honor.
your punches sounded like sturdy whips when they connected, an unbelievable amount of force put behind them considering your small stature — and you certainly didn’t shy away from using your legs, too, repeatedly slamming your foot into the downed man’s ribs as you rained in punches in between.
“if you aren’t ready to back up your words, don’t fucking speak!” you seethed to the man, eyes blazing in a way that absolutely captivated sakura.
just what was this feeling in his chest? was it pride? was it adoration? he couldn’t distinguish that; the only thing he knew was that it had taken root and was sprouting throughout his entire body.
to think… you were so strong.
but, he really should do something; the man on the sidewalk looked close to losing consciousness. thinking quickly, sakura interrupted your next punch by looping his elbow through the crook of yours — only to stumble forward when you attempted to proceed with the strike.
“(y/n), it’s over!” sakura barked, planting his feet into the ground for more power and stability.
“like hell it is!” you grunted back. “it’s not over until this little punk has lost all his teeth.”
sakura really shouldn’t have found that aggression of yours so stimulating — it wasn’t the time nor the place.
“look, just let it go! he’s out now. he can’t even talk anymore!”
you were still struggling against sakura’s hold, thrashing like some sort of trapped animal, and sakura had to grit his teeth and do something he never thought he’d have to do — he used as much strength as he could to quite literally manhandle your body out of the way.
the sudden uprooting caused you to stumble the moment your feet were placed back on solid ground, and you tripped over a protruding crack in the cement. you landed on your ass with a small, grumbled “oof.”
sakura placed himself between you and the unconscious man, blocking your view of him as you blinked up at sakura with wide eyes.
“you done now?” sakura asked, folding his arms over his chest — he knew damn well he looked like a parent scolding a child, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care. your breathing was labored and your cheeks were flushed from the exertion, but that fire in your eyes had died down. you licked your lips and nodded mutely.
“good.” sakura grunted. he extended his hand to you, which you took gratefully.
“let’s go get your hands cleaned up. they’re a mess.” sakura suggested as he hauled you to his feet. it was true — your knuckles had been split and he could see bruises beginning to form already. maybe that was a good thing.
without this kind of physical proof, no one would ever believe him when he said you’d taken down a grown man by yourself.
after all, how could sweet, petite, pacifist (y/n), girlfriend of the notoriously violent sakura, ever manage to do such a brutal thing?
maybe sakura would just continue to let people think that; that way, he could keep this new side of you explicitly to and for himself.

jo togame is absolutely enamored by the way you have to look up at him to talk to him.
it’s a consistent thing you do — you pretty much have to, considering the height difference between you two. but it never fails to make his heart skip a beat.
but, of course, you have to make it a thousand times cuter by adding your own little quirks to it; such as bouncing on the balls of your feet, or standing up on your tippy toes to ‘reach him better’, or the cute little head tilts you do when you ask a question or couldn’t quite catch his words.
but what stalled his engines, killed his brain process, and completely rewired his chemical balance was the day you surged your hands up to pull him down into a chaste kiss. even with him slightly bent to reach you, you still stood on your very tippy toes to slot your lips to his in the most comfortable way.
it lasted all of two seconds, but it was enough to leave togame feeling giddy about it for months after — and even after experiencing it hundreds of times within those few months, it still made his brain short circuit when it happened.
hajime umemiya simply adores the way you try to keep up with him.
he’s got long legs, and it’s all too easy for him to scale many feet with just a few steps — but for you, it’s an endurance battle. even umemiya’s casual strides seem more like a dash, and your legs have to work overtime to keep up with him.
he doesn’t mean to be cruel or unsympathetic; he just can’t hold back his urges at times. umemiya always feels warm when he ‘accidentally’ leaves you in the dust and you scramble to catch up to him, a pout on your lips as you loop your arms around his and force him to match your pace. it makes him feel wanted and needed — and when he’s wanted and needed by you, it’s a feeling akin to heaven.
but the day that all came to a stop was the same day that you caused him to short circuit.
umemiya was doing the same thing he normally did (usually at least once each day) and you reacted in the same way that you had each and every time; except when you looked up at him, you weren’t wearing your signature pout — instead, your brows were scrunched up and your eyes welled with fat tears.
“ume, don’t leave me behind again…” you whisper-croaked, and umemiya was torn in half by the sudden onslaught of ‘oh, no’ and ‘too cute’ that ravaged his brain.
it was cute because you were so distraught by the idea of him leaving you behind, but it was also terrible because you were so distraught by the idea of him leaving you behind.
after that, umemiya never walked ahead of you — he always walked beside you, or behind you; but never ahead.
suo hayato had never entertained the idea of falling in love. it wasn’t that he was objective to it; he figured that at some point it would happen, and he’d just roll with it when it did. but he certainly didn’t expect it to happen so soon.
suo couldn’t quite help it, though. you were a magnetic force, bubbly and sweet and outgoing. you didn’t know a stranger, and showing affection was just second nature to you. you had this (slightly irritating) ability to make someone feel like they were the center of the universe when you interacted with them — and left them feeling incredibly jealous when you did so with another person (or maybe that was just suo who felt that way.)
but what suo loved the most about you was your enthusiastic optimism towards the future. your views on that were a near contrast to suo’s; suo preferred to live in the present, leave the past behind, and simply wait for the future. he felt that focusing too much on the past or the future would take away the sensation of being in the present, so he blocked both of them out in order to fully immerse himself into where he was now.
but you… you talked about the future constantly. passionately. and, contrary to most people who daydreamed about the future, you strived in your present to secure that future you were so passionate about. suo would listen to you ramble for hours on end, never losing interest or falling tired — your voice was simply magnificent.
and that was what he was doing on that particular day, sitting across from you in a quaint little resto-cafe, chin in palm and slowly stirring his quickly cooling coffee as you rambled. you were talking about interior design, something you were highly fervid about, when you said the words that made his heart skip a beat.
“…and I think we should open a tea-house together. I mean, your tea-steeping skills are amazing, and with my eye for design, we could get really popular!”
you were still rambling, but suo had stopped listening. not that he wanted to stop listening — but his mind was stuck on a loop right now.

you’d spoke of the future many times, but that was the first time you’d included him in it. suo’s heart was completely palpitating in his chest, snippets of a future with you crashing into one another while that little word repeated itself in his mind — courting — we — dates, — we —, buying a house, marriage, kids…
