CAROLINE FORBES — 3.22 "The Departed" The Vampire Diaries
Elena knew that helping out at the college was going to be a rough job but she'd failed to anticipate the amount of supplies the nurses office would need. Granted, she'd only planned to be there until they find a permanent nurse but alas, it was keeping her busy which these days was always appreciated. "Hey, can I help you with something? I'm still setting up but if you need something, I can see if I have it." She offered, stopping in the doorway as someone had peered in. @fallsstarters
Caroline had just arrived at the college from the Salvatore School. Splitting her time was challenging, but a challenge that she was definitely up for. Her first order of business - check on Elena. She'd been grateful that her friend had offered to help out. “I'm actually just checking in,” the blonde said. “I know our supplies are limited right now. I'm expecting more to come in tomorrow.” Too bad delivering services weren't as on top of everything as Caroline was.
"Hey, do these look even to you?" Mei asked, hearing footsteps outside of her room. She'd been decorating and one of the last steps was putting up her lights. "This just makes it feel more like home." She smiled, hanging the last string up. @fallsstarters
Caroline walked the halls, making sure everything was going well. She wanted to be present in case anyone needed something. She stopped and took a few steps back toward the door that she heard the question come from. She looked at the lights. “That side needs to be a little higher,” she said, pointing to the left.
Lizzie grabbed her coffee from the barista and took a seat in front of her mom. "True, what if there was some storm going on or something? It would ruin everything." She agreed. "I'm more confused than anything. I wish Josie was here. How about you? Keeping busy?"
Caroline's eyebrows pulled together at Lizzie being confused and then her question. “Yeah, I'm keeping busy. Going back and forth between the schools has kept me going,” she admitted. But she went back to Lizzie's comment, full mom-mode. “I wish Josie was around, too. I miss having both of my girls around.” She smiled. “But what is confusing? What can I help with?”
“You always have it all figured out, don’t you?” That part of Caroline never seemed to change over the years. “How’s everything going with the school?”
“Schools,” Caroline corrected. “The Salvatore School and Mystic Falls College.” She straightened a little. “It's a lot. But nothing I can't handle. I imagine the incoming students is a good thing for The Grill?"
“Come on, Caroline, you of all people should know how possible it is.” Plenty of her friends have cheated death themselves.
Well he had a point. It seemed like very few people stayed dead in this town. But Klaus hadn't died in Mystic Falls. “So you're alive now…” she said, almost expecting that he was some sort of ghost, or maybe she was just working herself crazy now. “I assume you're here to see Hope. Did she react okay?”
"Well it must be nice to be home either way," she said, knowing Caroline travelled alot for that school of hers. At least as the years went on. "No, that would make sense given I didn't call or really plan the trip all that much," she admitted. Couldn't exactly expect people to be a mind reader. "Oh-" Daphne shrugged. That was a good question. "i don't know yet, maybe till Dad calls and begs me to come home, or i run out of money," she said, knowing that both were very real problems with her plan. "But I just needed a break, you know?"
Caroline nodded. She had spent years traveling the world and looking for a solution to the merge. As she listened to her step-sister, Caroline worried, as she was prone to do when it concerned someone she cared about. “Well do you know where you're staying even? I mean, of course you could stay with me if you want. I… finally moved back into the house.” That had been a tough decision - to move from her apartment back into the home that she had shared with her mother. She had never been able to sell it. “So I have room. If you don't have anywhere to stay. But if you don't want to, that's fine, too. No pressure. But I'm here for whatever you need.”
"Well as someone taht just spent years living in a supernatural war zone," he said. "I think what we do is not go looking for problems," he said with a chuckle. You could find them anywhere in New Orleans all you had to do was look. "Yeah, we might find them, but we don't need to help them along. Just be there when they appear and try and stop them from growing. Trust people to be adults until they provide us wrong," he joked.
“There's a difference between looking for problems and preparing for them,” Caroline pointed out. “It's not like I want something bad to happen. I'm just not as hopeful that the brand new adults will actually act like adults.” She smiled. “I went to college once. I know what happens when you put young adults and alcohol together.”
"Oh, hardly. I have worked in too many kitchens to be scared off that easy," he said with a laugh. "Nothing is on fire and everyone has their fingers, we are doing great," he joked. "I was heading to get a coffee, if you want to join?"
“Sure, I could definitely use a coffee,” she agreed. “But just remember. No one has lost a finger yet. There's still time.” She was afraid someone would lose a lot worse than a finger or two. “I do think everything is going well so far. It makes me suspicious about when and what the first catastrophe will be.” Because something always went wrong in Mystic Falls. Even if it was just that they didn't have enough students, or that they had too many students. Or someone lost an arm…
"I know. It's just something to get used to," she admitted. Being in London, her circle had been much smaller. And once Shay's magic started to manifest, it had made it harder to have anyone else watch her. But here, they knew. They could handle seeing things floating around the house. "Besides a perfect Caroline clone who can do everything the great Caroline Forbes can do? Guess I come in a close second," she joked, wrapping her arms around her friend in a hug. "Chaotic? My toddler does magic without even trying. I'm used to chaotic."
A Caroline clone… that was an interesting idea. Not that it was possible. But it would allow for a lot to get done. She wrapped her arms around Bonnie, returning the hug. “Well don't say I didn't warn you,” she laughed. “Some of our students are pretty young. And a lot of our students act like big toddlers sometimes.” She didn't say it out loud but she especially thought it was true of the werewolves whenever a new wolf was brought to the school. “I'm so excited you're here,” she said, pulling away. “I hope you don't regret your decision to come back to Mystic Falls.” As much as she wanted her friend right there, she wanted more for her to be happy.
“Caroline Forbes.” Luka acknowledged, sipping his coffee. “I see you’re still round.”
She blinked a few times. This was the second person she had seen that wasn't supposed to be alive. “Yes, I'm still around,” she said. “Though admittedly, I don't understand how I'm seeing you right now.”
“The fresh air is quite lovely.” Klaus said with a smile, taking the empty seat in front of her. “And I’m sure that can be arranged, aren’t you in charge of the school?”
Her eyes shot open and she lifted her head to its original position. “Klaus,” she said, surprised. “You shouldn't be here.” She immediately realized how that sounded. “I mean, you're not supposed to be here. It shouldn't be possible.” Confusion was plain on her face.
“All fun and games until it rains.” Damon gave a smirk taking a seat in front of her.
“Well that's why you don't move the entire office outside. So you can work inside on the not-so-nice days.” Bright-side-of-practically-everything-Caroline was in full swing today.
Lizzie had ordered herself an ice coffee and took it outside to the patio. It was a nice day and she could use some fresh air for a change. She didn't realize her mom was there until she looked up and heard her voice. "That wouldn't be a bad idea, actually. We could all use more time in the fresh air."
She shouldn't have been surprised that someone would overhear her. This was Mystic Falls. Even if someone wasn't right next to her, there were too many vampires in this town not to be overheard by someone. Not that she had meant for her words to be a secret. She'd just been speaking to herself more than anything. But she smiled at her daughter. “Lizzie,” Caroline replied. “I think so, too. Though I don't know how functional an outdoor office could be,” she admitted. “But that's a problem for another day. How are you?”
Ezra looked up at the woman. “Maybe I’m a little bit of both if I’m being honest.” He cleared his throat. “Uh, I’m new to town.”
The blonde smiled. “Well, welcome to Mystic Falls. I grew up here. And a lot's changed since then, but it's still home.” She tilted her head slightly. “Is there anything I can maybe help with?”
"Surprise," Daphne said with a laugh when Caroline spotted her. It wasn't like they were close, step-sisters that never lived together, but family could be forged right? That's how they had happened. "i didn't exactly know where else to find you," she admitted. She was pretty sure she hadn't been living at her mother's place in town. Unless of course she had come to turns with that and decided to keep it after since they had last spoken about it, though that was like a lifetime ago now. "Yeah, yeah. I'll come in," she laughed, after all she had come all this way. "You busy?"
A genuine smile crossed Caroline's face. She hadn't been close to Daphne in her human life, but as time went on Caroline realized that she was going to lose family - she would outlive most of them. She didn't like to think about it, but it did mean that family, however distant, became much more important to her. She stood to the side to allow Daphne to come in. “Yeah, I can usually be found here or at the new college,” she replied. “Between the two I honestly don't have much time to be anywhere else." She laughed. Caroline wouldn't have had it any other way. She enjoyed this, even if it did get hectic from time-to-time. “I didn't expect to see you here. But I'm glad. How long are you in town for?”
"If you want a reminder, you're welcome to watch Shay. I know there's only one of her, but sometimes it feels like there are at least three," she suggested to one of her oldest friends. She hadn't been around in a long time. Most of her friends had only gotten to see her daughter through pictures and facetime. "Thanks again for letting me come work at the school. I can keep her close and not worry about her using her magic around people."
Caroline tilted her head, wondering just how much her friend's child had worn out of her. “Bonnie, seriously. I will watch her anytime. You've got a village, you just have to use us.” She smiled at her friend, genuinely hoping that Bonnie would take her up on that offer. Every mom needed a break now and then. “Please, you're doing me a favor, really,” she replied. “The school needs staff and I need more people willing to step in. Plus, you're always going to be my best friend. I know that I can trust you. So really, who would be better for a job like this?" She gestured around them generally. “And anyway, you might not want to thank me. Things can get kind of chaotic around here.”
