After not being able to play the game for almost 2 weeks, Iām finally home and started playing Skyward Sword again. I just finished the second dungeon of Lanayru. I really liked this dungeon a lot, specially since it really felt like a more ārealisticā aproach (since itās a ship). And the boss was really amazing. This dungeon might be my favorite with the second dungeon of Farone. Really cool places too. Also the similarities with dungeons in Oracle of Ages, I really liked them a lot (they are my favorite in the series)
Really excited of whatās to come next, next one should be the second dungeon of Eldin region. I really liked the first one, so I hope itās amazing as well!
(Also noticing how Link is collecting the triforce mmm . I donāt really know where this is going, I donāt know anything about the game!!!! but Iām hyped! Also cool ass sword)
For curiosity, what itās your Zelda collection? This is mine! Though, I didnāt have yet when I took the picture Echoes of Wisdom, the Oracles manga and Hyrule Historia! Little by little, we are getting more stuff >:)
(Also Minish Cap cartridge, but my boyfriend currently has it so hahaha)
I was revisiting my gallery, and found this pics I took when I was playing ALBW for like, the third time? I still canāt belive how gay they let Ravio be in this game 𤣠(at least in the spanish tl)
Hereās like an aprox tl of what he says:
āWow! You can turn into a painting! What a guy! I could kiss you right now!ā (Kiss?š„¹)
āBy the way hero⦠Those leggings look really good on you! ā¤ļøā (is he flirting with me?)
This pairing is def my fav in all of zelda, they are so cute!!!!
Finished my replay of Linkās Awakening DX. I absolutely adore this game with my whole heart. It makes me so happy just by playing it. No matter what version of the game it is, itās a fantastic game from start to finish, if you havenāt played yet, please do!!!!!
(Also a bit sad I could not complete the photo album, I didnāt know the Richard picture was time locked like the Marins ones T-T)
Since Linkās Awakening is one of my absolute favorite games of all time, and Iāve been replaying it recently, I wanted to sit down and write a deep-dive analysis of how the events of this game affected Legend, and how Koholint Island reflects his past traumas and adventures from A Link to the Past and the Oracle games.
This is one of my all-time favorite video games, so this is going to be a very long, text-heavy post! So prepare for a lot of overanalyzing.
Also, I know most of the similarities can be explained with āthe Oracle games used the LA engine,ā but letās go deeper than that. Also, for the sake of continuity, I prefer to think that the Oracle games go BEFORE Linkās Awakening (it makes more sense than after it, honestly).
First, we have to talk about why exactly Linkās Awakening starts in the first place. We know that Legend is seen on a boat at the start of the game. But why exactly?
In the original 1993 manual, it is said that the legendary hero, after the events of ALTTP, decides to journey away from Hyrule on a quest for enlightenment. It is also said that this hero spends months traveling. Of course, by this point, the Oracles donāt exist. But if we take into consideration that the Oracles go before Linkās Awakening after all, by the end of the game, we see Legend leaving on a ship. It makes sense that after what happens in both Labrynna and Holodrum, and seeing Ganon almost resurrecting, he wanted to train just in case something else happened. Also, both of his ships in the Oracles and in Linkās Awakening look somewhat similar.
When Legend awakes on Koholint Island, in Marin and Tarinās home, the first thing he says is "Zelda." Because Marin looks extremely similar to her. In the Oracles, Zelda's sprite is based on Marinās; the only real difference is the colors and that they added a little crown.
But not only is Marin similar, Tarin is as well. After all, Legend met little Malon and her father Talon in Holodrum. He also has to save both Tarin and Talon in both adventures.
When we leave the house, we see a lot of similarities in the characters as well. From the kids to even the elderly. Grandma Yahoo, for example, looks extremely similar to the old lady in the north of Horon Village. Even the old lady talks about her husband, but we can never see him in-game. Maybe he would have looked like Ulrira? Also, in ALTTP there was this old lady, literally called the Sweeping Lady, who is one of the few characters in Kakariko to still believe in Legend. Maybe Legend's subconscious mind pulled in faces he trusted from his past adventures, desperately trying to make himself feel safe in an unfamiliar place.
Another character that reminds me of another is Madam MeowMeow; she reminds me a lot of Mamamu Yan from Oracle of Ages.
We also see and meet The Owl. Maybe the owl took that form since, for him, they represent knowledge and advice. After all, in his adventures in Labrynna and Holodrum, owl statues were the ones giving him advice both in the overworld and in dungeons.
We can also see that Legend likes to put his name on both his sword and shield. Even the game comments on the fact that he should engrave his name on the Koholint Sword when he gets it. This can work as him trying to stay grounded with reality. After all, he IS Link. He is a real, living person that exists. He shouldnāt forget that.
Now, we can talk about the overworld. Koholint Islandās layout, overall, seems based on Holodrumās layout. Like Holodrum, the beach is on the far left, and the desert is on the far right. A small village is located on the right side, with lots and lots of mountains overall on the top. On the left side is a forest, and on the top left side, a āmysterious forest.ā
When we continue exploring Koholint, we meet a lot of new people. For example, the witch, Syrup. Legend is very familiar with this witch; we see her in both ALTTP and in the Oracle games. (Thanks to the GBA port, we know her name is Syrup).
Now for Crazy Tracy, she is completely unique; she only appears here, in Koholint. Perhaps she is a manifestation of Legendās tiredness; he is tired of everything. But he cannot give up, despite how tired of everything he is. So Tracy helps him with what he needs to continue going: a potion that refuses to let him die, forcing him to stand back up even when he hits his absolute limit. She even heals him for free!
⢠The Mouse is a photographer; we can meet him in his shop, and he only appears in the DX version of the game. He loves to take pictures of everything and made an album for Legend where he can store his photos. Maybe Legend doesnāt want to forget anything that happens on this island. He wants to keep them forever, and what better way than photography? From different people that he meets in Koholint to even Marin (who is the only character in the game to have 3 different pictures). Legend doesnāt want to forget them at all.
When Legend continues his adventure, we can see that someone has stolen Bow Wow, apparently some Moblins. And Legend has to go to their hideout (sounds familiar?). Here, Legend fights with the Moblin Chief. Obviously, this is very similar to what happens with the Great Moblin in both Oracles; in Ages, he even steals the Goronsā bomb flowers. Though this time around, the fight doesnāt consist of throwing bombs. But this is another sign of Legendās mind trying to make things familiar to him.
We also meet Prince Richard. Both Ralph (Ages) and Richard are proud, dramatic nobles who carry swords and have a fierce sense of duty. When Legend is trapped in the dream, his mind recycles the idea of a noble ally who needs his help to regain his castle, just like Ralph needed his help to save Nayru. And just like Zelda, Ralphās sprite is based on Richardās.
And we can't forget Kiki! Legend is very familiar with this monkey. Kiki is the name of the monkey Legend pays to open the Palace of Darkness in ALTTP. Just like in reality, if Legend gives him bananas, Kiki helps him build a bridge.
When Legend arrives at the Animal Village, this place always felt like a very āyou are safe hereā place. Legend is very close to animals. In both Labrynna and Holodrum, a lot of talking animals live there, and Legend is very close friends with three: Moosh, Dimitri, and Ricky.
In this place, the animals want to hear Marin sing again. This is a very direct parallel to the start of Ages, where the animals love to hear Nayru sing. And when Nayru disappears, they are sad and want to hear her singing again.
When Legend goes looking for Marin, she is not in her house. She is at the beach. And one of the most beautiful and intimate scenes of the games appears. Marin talks about her dream: that if she was a seagull, she would fly away from Koholint Island and sing for many people, wondering if her dream will come true if she wishes to the Wind Fish. And that also, her heart skipped a beat when she found him on the shore, believing that he had come to give the islanders a message. By the end, she says that she wants to know everything about Legend.
This scene here is very important for Legend. From what we can see of him, he is a very solitary person. In ALTTP, after he saw his uncle die and started having to hide from guards, he is pretty much alone in all of the game. By the end of that game, we can see that all the people go back to normal, even his uncle (though we still donāt know if this is the case for the AU).
But that peace doesnāt last long, since the Triforce sends him to Labrynna and Holodrum. In the Oracle games, in Ages, we see him sometimes with Ralph when we can catch him. Though in Seasons, outside of the animal companion that you can choose from (who only appear when Legend calls to them), he is again alone.
So now, on this island, this girl that he knows nothing aboutāonly that she is nice enough to let him sleep in her house, and looks like Zeldaāis saying she wants to know everything about him. Yes, about him. Not as a hero, nothing like that. As a person. That is a lot, actually. But Legend accepts it. Because, after all, he also wants to know everything about Marin as well, right? So he trusts Marin.
After this scene, Legend goes with Marin to a lot of places, and the mouse takes a lot of pictures of them. She even declares the cliff at the left of the beach is their secret place. They also go to the Trendy Game Shop, and a very cute scene plays where, Marin is the one playing there, but instead of picking up an item, she picks up the Owner. Of course, both of them got kicked out. They for sure grow closer during this time. Definitely, during this time, Legend feels at peace and is truly enjoying himself.
When Legend takes Marin to the Animal Village, she awakens the sleeping Walrus. After this, Marin stays in the Village, singing to the animals.
Now itās time to talk about the instrument of this game (or at least the one Legend can actually use). The ocarina. Itās not the first time Legend uses one; in ALTTP, even though itās called a flute, itās very much an ocarina. As we know, the ocarina in ALTTP belongs to the Flute Boyāa very tragic story. This ocarina we can use in ALTTP in front of the Weathercock to unlock the fast travel. In Mabe Village, there is a Weathercock that is pretty much identical to the one in ALTTP. Maybe the mind of Legend associated the one from Kakariko with safety and beautiful music. And now, in Linkās Awakening, that was where Marin spent the first part of the game, singing happily.
With the ocarina obtained, we can see the beautiful scene of Marin singing with Legend accompanying her with his ocarina. And now he knows the Ballad of the Wind Fish. A very important song. Also, if you play this song in front of Marin, she will say that itās not very good. Well, now Marin can teach him more times until he gets it right!
Marin also tells him to please not forget her. This parallels a lot with the words Ralph said to him before he decided to go kill Queen Ambi in Ages. So those words definitely told his brain that it was a bad signal. But I think Legend decided to ignore that.
By the fifth dungeon, we can see that the bosses are laughing at Legend. Mocking us because we donāt know the kind of island that Koholint is.
When we go to the sixth dungeon, everything changes. Before going to the dungeon, the key is needed. So we have to go to the southern temple. Everything is normal. Legend proceeds with determination and defeats the boss. After the boss, he sees the mural. It says that everything, every single thing on the island, is an illusion. At this point, we know he is shocked because we get actual dialogue from him saying, āWhat? An illusion?ā But Legend still canāt accept the truth. It makes no sense. So Legend goes to the temple for sure there must be something that makes sense there, right?
The Face Shrine is my absolute favorite dungeon in the whole series. From the music, the layout, the puzzles. Everything. Itās a complete masterpiece in terms of dungeon design.
We also canāt forget that this dungeon is FILLED with elephant statues. And Legend has to acknowledge the elephant in the room. But he refuses to do so. But itās okay, afterall, the Nightmare, tells him the reality directly. That yes, everything is fake; yes, by everything it means EVERYTHING, Even Marin.
By this point, we know that Legend is freaking out a lot. Because if we go to Mabe Village, he starts asking the people there stuff like, āWhen did you start living on the island?ā Of course, they donāt know those stuff. They also donāt understand his questions. Legend is seriously trying to keep himself sane, to prove that everything is real. Seriously.
We also have to talk about what happens with Legendās body during the game. An Owl Statue, by the right of the Face Shrine, explicitly tells us that if the Wind Fish never awakens, Legend dies. After all, while this is all happening, his body is currently still out at sea, weak and completely asleep. If he takes too long to awaken the Wind Fish, both the Wind Fish (since the Nightmares are basically parasites) and him die. So thereās no other way. He has to awaken the Wind Fish.
By the seventh dungeon, which I also love the design of Eagle Tower by the way, the Nightmares are seriously desperate and tell him that he will disappear if the Wind Fish awakens, because he is also in his dream.
We also have to talk about the bosses in this game. Since a lot of people on Koholint Island are similar to people Legend once knew, itās pretty much a given that the bosses are as well.
⢠Moldorm: The first boss in this game. Of course, anyone would remember that thing from ALTTP with its annoying pushing us down. So of course, Legend would remember him as well.
⢠Slime Eye: For example, looks an awful lot like Vitreous from the Misery Mire in ALTTP.
⢠Angler Fish: Also appears as a miniboss in Oracle of Ages.
⢠Smasher: Also appears as a miniboss in Oracle of Ages.
⢠Armos Knight: The one that appears in the southern dungeon of the Face Shrine is pretty much exactly the same as the ones in ALTTP.
⢠Lanmola: Appear in the desert, pretty much the same as the ones in ALTTP.
⢠Facade: Appears in Oracle of Seasons as a miniboss.
A lot of bosses and minibosses in this game are basically fragments of Legendās memories. Also, the miniboss music in both Oracle of Ages and Seasons is the Nightmares' music in Linkās Awakening.
We can also talk about Turtle Rock. This dungeon, of course, reappears from ALTTP. Again, another fragment of Legendās memories.
Another character that I feel is similar is the Flying Rooster. Itās pretty much identical to the Flying Cucco of Seasons, even having the same purpose. Also, we can meet a character on top of the mountain who loves cuccos and looks awfully familiar to Ingo in Oracle of Seasons.
Koholint is essentially based on Legendās own memories and feelings. The Nightmares were keeping the Wind Fish trapped, but to defend themselves against Legend, they manifested as the very monsters he had fought in the past. These Nightmares are his trauma. After all, the dream is not only from the Wind Fish; it is essentially his as well.
The items in the game are practically identical to the ones in ALTTP, with the exception of Rocās Feather and the shovel. But as we know, those are in the Oracles as well. So Legend can only use items that he has already gotten and used in reality.
By the end of the game, after he has gotten all the instruments, itās time to wake up the Wind Fish. But, of course, before that, he needs to find the Magnifying Lens because he cannot hide from the truth. He needs to accept it and go head-on.
Of course, the final battle. Since all of the Nightmares have been using looks similar to the memories of Legend, this time it could not be any further from that, since they take the form of both Agahnim and Ganon from ALTTP, having the exact same attacks even. The nightmares do everything they can to stop Legend from waking up the Wind Fish. They donāt want to disappear, but it is too late.
When Legend finds the Wind Fish, we can confirm the dream is also his because the Wind Fish tells him that they āhave to awaken together.ā
Eventually, by the end of the game, we see how everything on the island, including the people, and of course, Marin, disappears.
And all we have is Legend sitting in what is left of his ship, in the middle of the sea.
Personally, I just love how the game makes use of everything it has to tie it to the narrative. I also think that, despite everything, by the end, Legend would be sad of course, but also okay in a sense. After all, everything he defeated was his own past trauma. So, mentally despite everything, some stuff has been cleared out for him. And, despite everything, if we get the good ending of the game, we also see how Marin has achieved her dream. Sheās real now. Seeing her, I think Legend would be happy for her, honestly. It would hurt a lot, but after all, he carries the memories of all the people there. He has to continue forward for everyoneās sake.
This is my analysis of this game and how it ties into Legend as a character. As you can see, this game is very special to me. I played it when my mental health was not the best due to the stress of life. So it means a lot to me. Legend as a character as well. I for sure left some stuff out, but I tried to tie everything together the best I could. Please, if you have anything you want to ask, do so! I love talking about Legend a lot, hahaha.
This is an amazing analysis, filled with many things I didn't notice.
Curiously, my gameplay of ALTTP and LA made me arrive to two different conclusions though I agree that there's definitely a lot about Link facing his traumas and, in a way, healing.
In ALTTP and OoX, I noticed that Link was a people's person. The guy is a social butterfly who visits his sick friends, clean a front yard and who has many people telling him "I trust you". He is a beloved and integrated member of society and when he goes to other nations, he inmediatly joins parties and participates and dances to win prizes. But, this is probably because I played ALTTP the old fashioned way (talking to every NPC for clues).
Meanwhile, in LA, as I played it I came across the child's dialogue after getting the sword, so I believer Link always suspected something was amiss on the island
I actually agree with this!! In the sense. I think Link is a solitaire person but but, in a personal sense. He likes talking to people, and enjoys helping and being there with them. But in a personal sense, of, talking about him, as a person? I think itās rather weird in a sense. Mostly because some stuff he goes through, for example, in ALTTP might be hard for him to talk about.
Also, his house is rather far from Kakariko, so (considering I believe his uncle to be a somewhat protective person), I think Link grew up a bit without a lot of friends of his age.
This is something I love about the old games, since we canāt never see his expressions or faces, everyone interpretation of the characters depends entirely on how they play
Also thank you for your kind comment!! I love just, analysing everything about this specific Link!! I gotta replay ALTTP⦠itās been a while
Since Linkās Awakening is one of my absolute favorite games of all time, and Iāve been replaying it recently, I wanted to sit down and write a deep-dive analysis of how the events of this game affected Legend, and how Koholint Island reflects his past traumas and adventures from A Link to the Past and the Oracle games.

I havenāt seen a lot of people talk how close Legend actually is of dying in the end of Linkās Awakening.
When you finish the game, all he has is a completely wrecked boat. He is in the middle of the sea, with no way of going back to land, after all Koholint, the closest island that we can see, is completely gone. I remember a few years ago, people theorized that this Link actually died in the ending, because this is the last game we see of him, and in the ending just shows him in the sea. And realistically he has no way of going back to Hyrule.
Personally, I always liked to think that he managed to survive, but with the help of the Wind Fish. I think the Wind Fish, as a thank you, helped a bit with the wind, letting him go back to Hyrule before he dies. But I think, when he arrived he was very very weak, and it took him a few days to almost recover, at least physically. Mentally, thatās a different story.
I have always loved Linkās Awakening, and I love to explore the game and how it relates with Legend as a character. Specially, since the game also ties with his darkest fears (with the nightmares taking the forms of Agahnim and Ganon, and if we take in consideration the Oracles happening before this game, some bosses reappearing there, like Facade and Smasher). So the game, on purpose, is doing everything it can to stop Legend from waking the Wind Fish, using his fears to do so.
I could continue analyzing, but I donāt want to make a very long post. But I really like seeing Legendās games and how can they affect him as a person.
For me at least, this is what I believe, (also please bear in mind that this is all my headcanons)
⢠Sky: I honestly like thinking that he is (except for Time) the oldest of the group, but not by that much. So I think he is around 25.
⢠Twilight: Funny, I think he is the second oldest, by just by a tiny margin, so I think he is ALMOST 25, but not yet quite. So Sky is older than him (but everyone treats Twilight like an older brother)
⢠Wild: Considering TOTK, I think he is currently around 24.
⢠Warriors: Around 23 I think, definetly on the older side of the group.
⢠Legend: I think he is around 22 or maybe 21. I feel he is in the middle of the age range of the group.
⢠Hyrule: I personally feel a young vibe from him, so I think he is around 19.
⢠Wind: I think he is almost 14, and he says he is 14. But he is not yet. He wants to be older like the rest of the team.
⢠Four: Now, I honestly think Four might be younger than Wind (Personally, I always thought Minish Cap Link to be the youngest out of all the Links, considering the circumstances of the game). But he is definetly more mature than a lot of the group. So I think he is like 13? Maybe. (Also I like to think that the rest of the group doesnāt know his age, because he doesnāt want to be treated like a little brother like Wind hahaha)
Now for Time. His age is weird, I honestly canāt think of any age that fits him (and also I like having it being a mystery). But I think he is like. 30 AT MAX (obviously thats physically, mentally is like a whole different thing)
Finished today the first visit of Lanayru in Skyward Sword. I really liked this place and dungeon, reminded me a lot of Oracle of Ages with the mechanics of the rocks (which for me, has the best dungeon designs in all of Zelda). Also the item that you acquire in this dungeon reminds me a lot of the Gust Jar and considering, that in the dungeon before, you obtain the Mole Mitts, makes me happy that a lot of the items of Minish Cap are returning :).
Overall, Iām enjoying this game a lot. I prefer the exploration of older Zelda titles, but itās very fun so I donāt mind.
Iāve been playing a lot of Skyward Sword lately, since I have mostly played only 2d titles. This is very weird, but itās very fun! But Iām definetly not used to be able to swim or jump hahaha
