Will Byers Has the Power Vecna Needs to Deal With What he Hates Most: Time Itself
hold on. just had a thought regarding will and vecna’s connection.
so in vecna’s ep7 monologue, he talks a lot about the oppressive nature of time—a social construct. he interprets time as the “villain” of humanity, forcing us to conform to mundane lives.
“Where some saw order, I saw a straight jacket. A cruel, oppressive word dictated by made up rules. Seconds minutes hours days weeks months years decades. Each life a faded lesser copy of the one before. Wake up eat work sleep reproduce and die. Everyone is just waiting. Waiting for it all to be over.” —vecna/henry/001, 4x07
many have theorized that will was specifically targeted because of his parallels to vecna. both described as sensitive children, both draw, and specifically draw the mind flayer, both don’t fit in with other children, etc. this is all widely discussed.
however, vecna’s motivations for targeting will and ensuring that he lives while the others like barb die is really up to speculation and theory. does will have powers? does he perhaps have a soteria implant in his neck, just like henry? does vecna want to use will in some way or get him to join him? WHY though? what purpose does will serve to him? vecna says that he has been BUILDING something. if will is the key to season 5, will MUST HAVE a deeper role in this world vecna is trying to build.
perhaps, vecna saw not only his similarities with will, which is why he was targeted, but saw that will possessed the power to manipulate exactly the aspect of life that he so despised: time itself. perhaps, vecna did initially plan to kill will in the upside down, but once he saw that time froze the moment was transported there, he thought twice. he could obviously see into will’s mind and analyze his past and similarities, but combine that with will’s ability to rid the world of the thing vecna hates most—time—well, that does not sound like someone vecna would want to kill.
perhaps this is the true reason will was kept alive in the upside down, and the key point that will make him the main character in season 5.
vecna was unsuccessful with getting el to join him back in 1979. when she opened the gate, he knew that he would need someone to join him to achieve his goals. maybe by accident, maybe on purpose, he chose will and saw that he had the very power he needed to carry out his master plan.
that is why will was possessed by the mind flayer. that is why will is so important to vecna.
another thing to note is that will HAS BEEN A VICTIM of the oppressive nature of time all throughout stranger things. his childhood was taken from him by supernatural forces, and the moment he is somewhat free of those forces, his friends abandon him for “grown up” things. will is a victim of time moving too fast and leaving him with so much heartbreak (enter: seasons 3 and 4).
