5th of July 2026: Nilsson’s Whitefish

Unfortunately the only image I was able to find of this fish is one of them lying dead on the grass. This is Nilsson’s Whitefish (Coregonus nilssoni), a European freshwater fish [1].

They are found in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, as well as having a separated population in the drainage of the lower Odra in Poland and Germany. The largest individual recorded from the former area was 25 cm, while one from the Polish population has been recorded at 38 cm [2].

They are pelagic fish, meaning they are found in open waters, usually at around depths of 5-10 m. They feed on zooplankton and spawn between November and March [2]. Despite being the victims of commercial fishing at the local scale, their distribution is broad enough that the IUCN has classified them under Least Concern [1].

There is however some discussion as to whether they are a distinct species or just a subpopulation of the Bourget Whitefish (C. lavaretus). They are not the only victim of this, with many populations being claimed under the “Coregonus nilssoni species complex”, which would be referred to by the common name of Common Whitefish or European Whitefish. Recent taxonomical checklists do still put down Nilsson’s Whitefish as a separate species though [1].
