Real quick, can we talk about how great Love Simon is? I work at a movie theater and even though I havenāt actually seen the movie, I canāt tell you how many people have come out of the auditorium saying how much they loved it. I canāt tell you how many groups of teens Iāve seen taking pictures in front of the the standee (āDear movie goers, please make a line in concessions, it doesnāt have to be straight.ā) and holding pride flags. I canāt tell you the number of smiles Iāve seen from older LGBT+ community members as they take pictures of each other pointing to the various Love Simon posters. Everyone is having a great time, itās amazing, and I love it.
Wait you preformed for the President? what did you perform?
It was my school band, we just played for his inaugural parade. We played a couple songs, I played baritone.

At some point in your life, you had completely given up on love. Maybe it was in first grade when that boy stepped on your Valentine and then tore it to shreds. Or maybe it was in sixth grade when somebody asked you out as a joke and the other students stared and laughed. Maybe it was in tenth grade after your first boyfriend broke up with you. Or maybe it was now, as you stood outside of your now ex-boyfriend's apartment, as he shut the door in your face. What were you to expect when you walked in that door? Of all things, you certainly didn't think you'd find him with that brunette from his office perched over him with her tongue in his mouth and her underwear on the floor. But then, there you were. His favorite bag of candy still in your hand, and a soda in the other. Ten minutes ago you had been at 7/11 with your friend, on your way to check on your boyfriend who claimed to have had a long day at work and, "wanted some time to chill." As you saw now, that wasn't quite the truth.
You wish you had lunged out at him the moment you saw them together. You wish that you had had the courage to say something, anything, just a single word if possible. You couldn't though, you couldn't fathom what was in front of you. So, you stood there silent until he finally opened his eyes as he unbuttoned her blouse, and he saw you. At first, it seemed as though there was a flicker of guilt in his eyes, but the sneer he let out made you realize that this wasn't something he regretted. And the spare key that used to be under the doormat that now hung from her purse made it painfully obvious that this wasn't the first time it had happened. It just seemed to be a blur after that, he took your key to his apartment out of your hand and rushed you out the door, all the while she sat there, continuously undressing. And then the door slammed - and here we are, back at the beginning. You standing in front of a shut door, and your best friend waiting in the car, thinking you're going to come back any minute with empty hands, and a happy smile.
You fumbled to shove the candy and soda back into your purse and then quietly made your way back to the car. Everything the same as when you saw it a few moments ago, yet the feeling you had was completely different. As you climbed into the car, Calum sat there smiling, "did he like it?" Rather than breaking down into tears and unleashing all of your emotions on him, you opted for a gentle nod and half-hearted smile. How could you tell him that you'd just witnessed your boyfriend cheating on you? He and Michael were friends after all - did Calum know about this? Was he just playing along with everything even though he knew Michael had been seeing that girl? Or perhaps Calum was about as aware of the situation as you were just a minute ago. Maybe he had no idea of what was going on. But until you were ready to tell him what had just happened, there was no way of knowing whether he had been in the know or not.
"Y/N, where do you feel like going for dinner?"
You spoke quietly, "I actually don't feel great, I ate some pretty questionable Hot Cheetos earlier."
Calum furrowed his brow and stared at you, "Questionable...Hot Cheetos? How were they questionable? The worst they can do is go stale."
"Oh, well you know my roommate, she has weed-infused Hot Cheetos and I completely forgot that they're edibles and just snagged a couple before I got in the car with you."
Nodding slowly he started the engine of the car, "Riiiiiiiiight, well then we should probably get you home."
The car ride was quiet, the only sound you heard during the drive was his playlist with the occasional ad in-between because he was too cheap to pay for premium Spotify. You traced your hand over your keyring again and again, strange how taking one key off of it can make it feel so much lighter. Every few minutes or so you'd sniffle or clear your throat, doing your best to hold back the inevitable tears that came with any breakup. And even though Calum noticed, he simply chalked it up to you being stoned out of your gourd.
After about twenty minutes of driving, you finally pulled up to your apartment building. Usually, you hated the crappy old thing, it was falling apart and the only reason you lived here was that the rent was cheap. Now though, the chipping tan paint that covered the exterior had never seemed so comforting. You pulled your bag over your shoulder and as you did, the bag of candy fell out onto the seat, and you were left in a three-way staring contest between you, Calum, and a bag of Skittles. Calum slowly lifted the bag and handed it back to you, he didn't say anything, he just looked back down, like he knew something had happened. You took a deep breath in and stumbled out what you could, "I - he, there was a girl, they're...it's over between Michael and me." And in that moment you felt something change, Calum reached towards you, and he held your hand. It wasn't the same as when a friend comforts you, no, this felt different. He gently pulled you back into the car, and as you came closer, you knew what was going to happen.
It hadn't been a secret that Calum had feelings for you. The two of you had met through Michael, it was a busy night at a crowded Applebee's at midnight. You sat snuggling with Michael in a corner booth while everyone bustled around you, and Calum walked in and made his way to your table. There was banter between you two, and even though it was obvious that there was chemistry there, you chose to ignore it in favor of Michael. You were faithful to him, a concept that apparently you only cared about in that relationship. However, since that night, Calum had been your best friend. There for you when you needed it, a mediator in every fight between you and Michael, and the one person you could trust above all else. Even after he had confessed his feelings for you after a particularly bad fight with Michael that ended up with you and Calum both downing a bottle of tequila, things were still - normal.
And here it was, the moment Calum had been waiting for. Sure, it might not be the perfect scenario, but he was willing to take a shot. Your lips barely brushed against his and you felt a slight warmth that you hadn't had with Michael. But nonetheless, you pulled away and glanced at him, "Calum you're really great...but Michael and I just ended things, and by him cheating on me no less." You trailed off, "I need time."
"I understand Y/N. Take all the time you need, I know that was a bad move on my part...but in my opinion, Michael made a mistake cheating on you with that girl from his office."
You stood there stunned for a second and then slammed the car door, and as Calum called after you, you only turned around to say one thing as you were walking away, "I never told you it was the girl from his office."

Footprints Soulmate!AU - Calum 5SOS
Soulmates have always been tricky business, that much was clear to everyone in the world. Maybe itās because everyone was so beautiful that you secretly hoped each person you saw was your soulmate. Maybe it was because everyone was trying too hard to find that perfect person. Maybe it was that your soulmate was in the last place you ever expected. Or maybe itās that the only way to find your soulmate, is for you to be at least one step behind them.
When you walk, you leave a trail of footprints behind you in black. Now, this isnāt visible to anyone but your soulmate. Not even you yourself could see your own footprints, you just had to trust that they were there, everywhere you walked. They would stay for an hour, and then they would disappear, no trace, no marks, nothing. So if you were lucky enough to spot footprints, you had to run like hell and follow them before it was too late. Some people walked slow because of it, and it was a pain in the butt for people who had places to go. So, on every sidewalk there was a slow lane and a fast lane. People who wanted their soulmate to know where they were, and people who had other things to do.
One morning you woke up to see that your alarm had gone off early. About two hours early actually. You took it as a sign to get a little more sleep before work and nodded off again. As you laid in bed you dreamt of falling in love and a handsome man sweeping you off your feet, and few other things that should require holy water and a confession after. However, you woke up when your phone buzzed, it was your boss letting you know that he needed you to stay an hour late at work today. As you checked the time you panicked and realized you had overslept and quickly got ready for work. You tousled your hair a little and stuck down the strays with a bit of hairspray and ran to put on your black pants and white shirt. You figured you would have time to do your makeup on the bus like always, so with that you slipped on your shoes and ran out the door.
You ran towards the bus stop, dodging all the people in the slow lane who were too caught up in love to notice you barreling through the crowd. You swore up and down at the people who werenāt paying attention to anything and pushed right past a guy so deep in thought that he was just staring at the floor. You quickly apologized and heard him yelling after you, but you didnāt have time to fight with strangers. You made it to the bus right as it was about to pull away and heaved a breath of a relief when the driver let you on; you were going to be on time to work. As you sat down and looked through your bag you couldnāt help but wonder how you were going to get home tonight. The bus you needed didnāt run late enough since you were staying late at work, and your roommate was out of town so she couldnāt give you a ride. You shrugged and looked out the window, tonight youād just have to call an Uber.
As Michael and Calum wandered the city, they couldnāt help but walk in the slow lane. Each person seemed so far off and was dazed in a daydream, it was interesting to watch. However, Michael couldnāt help but notice how Calum was beginning to act the same as the rest of the people. He sighed and stared off into the sky, his pace slowed down, and he seemed to forget where he was. After a few minutes of this, Michael nudged Calum and laughed, āyou okay? You seem a little off.ā Calum gave a small smile and looked towards the ground with a small glimmer of hope that he would see footprints.
A few minutes later Calum and Michael could hear someone swearing and shouting. āMove! Youāre in the fast lane could you get the fuck outta my way! Fuck you too, you little shit!ā Not bothering to look up, Calum was shoved aside by the stranger and fell towards Michael. The stranger waved a hand in the air and shouted, āsorry Iām late for work!ā Calum glanced at the floor once again, but this time, he saw black footprints. He watched for a second as you ran off into the distance, and he darted after you. He felt his chest heaving and his lungs burning, he couldnāt understand how you were running so fast and so far ahead of him. He shouted after you, but you didnāt turn back to look at him. He followed after your footprints down the block, but stopped when he reached a bus stop. The footprints ended there, and even if he took the next bus, he wouldnāt know where your stop was, and your footprints would probably be gone by the time he got there in an hour.
Michael jogged up to Calum and took a deep breath, āJesus, what was that about!ā
āThat was my soulmate.ā
āWait, what? Did you talk to them?ā
āI missed them,ā Calum said defeated.
Michael slumped onto a bench and smiled, āshe said she was going to work, so sheāll come back this way tonight, right?ā
Calum smiled and sat next to him, āyeah, she has to take the bus home if she took it to work, Iāll just wait here.ā
And so they sat all night, until the last stop. And they watched all night, until the last stop, as the only people left on the bus shuffled back home. No footprints, no soulmate, no hope.
