Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease refers to a chronic bacteria infection of the gums and bone supporting the teeth. It can affect one tooth or several teeth and if left untreated, may lead to tooth loss.
The most common form of periodontal disease includes gingivitis and periodontitis. In the early stages, only the gums are infected (gingivitis). Later, it spreads to the bone surrounding the tooth and other supporting tissues. Finally the tooth becomes loose and may fall out.
What are the common signs and symptoms of periodontal disease.
You may have periodontal disease if you have:
1) Bleeding gums when brushing
2) Red, swollen, puffy-looking or tender gums
3) Abscesses on the gum
4) Pus secreting from between the teeth and gums
5) Shaky teeth
6) Teeth appearing to drift apart from its original position
7) Receding gumline (gum recession).
8) Persistent bad breath.
9) Vague discomfort or dull-ache of gums and teeth.
What causes periodontal disease.
The main cause of www.periodontics.com.sg is bacterial plaque. Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with salivary proteins, constantly form a sticky colourless "plaque" on teeth. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form bacteria-harbouring calculus or "tartar" over time. Calculus can not be removed by daily tooth brushing and only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove it.
If left untreated, the bones, gums and connective tissue are destroyed. The teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed.
How is periodontal disease treated?
The main goal of periodontal treatment is to control the bleeding gum infection, prevent the disease progression and return to good oral health.
1) Scaling and Root Planing (Non-Surgical treatment).
The periodontics Singapore removes the plaque through a deep-cleaning method called scaling and root planing. Scaling means scraping off the tartar from above and below the gumline. Root planing involves using special instruments to remove tough calculus and bacteria deposits along the root surfaces under local anaesthesia.
2) Gum surgery (surgical treatment).
If deep pockets and gum inflammation remain following initial periodontal treatment with a deep cleansing, a periodontist may perform gum surgery to remove residual tartarin deep pockets or to reduce the periodontal pocket and make it easier for you, your periodontist Singapore and hygienist to keep the area clean.
What can I do to prevent gum disease?
1) Brush your teeth twice daily. Brushing after every meal is also helpful to minimize plaque accumulation.
2) In certain areas of the teeth, you may be advised to use interdental brush or end-tufted brush.
3) Floss every day.
4) Visit the dentist routinely twice a year for a check-up and professional cleaning.

Physiotherapists work in a variety of specialisms in health and social care. Additionally, some physiotherapists are involved in education, research and service management.
So, what should you take note when looking for a physiotherapist in Singapore?
Below are the most important things you must consider in finding the most suitable physiotherapist.
Area of Specialization.

Some physiotherapists may offer alternative treatments to replace the traditional methods of relieving pain like reflexology, hydrotherapy, reiki, shiatsu, different types of massage, and others. Ask the physiotherapist if your preferred method of treatment is available in their health centre or clinic.
Some health centre or clinic may have alternative health care professionals to treat patients aside from the physiotherapist, which include a massage therapist, life coach, Pilates coach or osteopath.
Essential Eye Exercises To Improve Presbyopia
We can not avoid growing old however, we can make healthy lifestyle changes in terms of diet and exercise that can make the aging process a pleasant one. The same principle applies to our eye health, even in the case of the vision disorder called Presbyopia. This is an age related vision condition that typically affects people around age 40. According to the American Vision Institute, this eye disorder is not an inherited condition and can be improved with Presbyopia eye exercises.
This vision problem is associated with the negative effects of aging on the visual system such as a loss of flexibility in the eye lens and the focusing power of the eye muscles. This reduces a person's ability to focus on close objects clearly. Consequently, people with this condition have difficulties reading and have a tendency to hold a book or a magazine at arm's length to read clearly. The commonly prescribed treatment for this condition is glasses. People with Myopia, Hyperopia or Astigmatism may also develop this eye problem later in life requiring the use of glasses with bifocal lenses.
An increased reliance on glasses actually decreases the natural focusing power of the eyes as the glasses do all of the focusing. Eventually, a person winds up needing stronger prescription glasses. For this reason, the American Vision Institute recommends eye exercises to be used in conjunction with reduced dependence on weaker prescription lenses. One of the major health concerns of people with this condition is a decrease in circulation in the eyes; one of the negative effects of aging which increases the risk for age related vision disorders like Glaucoma, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration. What is particularly beneficial about eye exercises is that they reduce the risk of these vision disorders by increasing nutrient absorption, oxygen and circulation to the visual system.
Considering the fact that one of the causes of eye conditions relates to the buildup of stress and tension in the eye muscles; The National Eye Institute recommends a series of stress relieving eye exercises to alleviate this eye problem. Here are some tips to improve Presbyopia:
The 20/20/20 Rule: This technique relieves stress and tension in the eye muscles. It involves looking at an object twenty feet away, every twenty minutes for 20 second intervals. This is a technique that can be performed at the computer or whenever you are performing any type of close up work. You can place a 20/20/20 sticker on your computer as a reminder to perform this technique.
A simple technique such as applying a very light and gentle message over your closed eyelids for about 10 seconds, can improve circulation to the eyes. Exercise caution while performing this technique and do not press your eyes. Allaboutvision.com recommends a daily diet rich in vitamins A, C and E.Good nutritional sources of these vitamins include fruits, vegetables and Flax seed.
Eye Muscle Exercises: There are various Presbyopia eye exercise techniques that do improve this condition. Such eye exercises increase the strength and the focusing power of the eyes.
Presbyopia Exercise: Here is a technique that shows you how to improve Presbyopia. In order to perform this technique, cross your eyes by focusing on the tip of your nose. Then, shift your focus to an object in the distance. Repeat 2 sets of 10 repetitions 4 times a week. However, remember to inhale deeply while you are focusing on the tip of your nose and exhale when you are focusing on an object in the distance.
When it comes to Presbyopia correction, not only do eye exercises reduce the risk of age related vision disorders like Macular Degeneration, but they also increase the circulation and focusing power of the eye muscles improving eye health. Ultimately, in conjunction with the right nutrition, these eye techniques can reduce the problems associated with Presbyopia. Find more Lasik surgery Singapore
Options For Vision Adjustment
Q: My child is 21 years old as well as has -8.00 dioptres of short-sightedness in both eyes.
She places on get in touch with lenses to repair her vision. Is it far better to make use of Lasik or implantable collamer lenses (ICL) to remedy her short-sightedness completely?
A: Both Lasik and ICL procedure are reliable and likewise risk-free.
Neither one is remarkable to the different other. A cosmetic doctor that is qualified to carry out both will certainly suggest customers which is the suggested method for them along with why.
PRINCIPLES OF LASIK
Lasik uses a beam of light from an excimer laser to delicately improve the exterior house window of your eye, acknowledged as the cornea.
When wavefront modern technology is used, the laser improves the cornea with very little impact on its natural account. This lowers the hazard of post-operative radiance along with haloes during the night, as well as can enhance the prospective consumers of vision efficiency.
When non-wavefront modern-day technology is used, the laser boosts the treatment area of the cornea just, yet does not blend this new profile right into the non-treated location, giving even more possibilities of glare along with haloes in the evening post-operatively.
Lasik can take care of as much as -12.00 dioptres of short-sightedness, -6.00 dioptres of astigmatism in addition to +5.00 dioptres of long-sightedness.
The treatment is accepted by the UNITED STATES Fda (FDA) for those developed 18 years and likewise above.
A great deal of people create some degree of dry eyes immediately after the procedure, yet this is short-term.
As soon as the corneal cells have re-grown after a number of months, produced tear declines are used throughout the recuperation duration as well as can be quit.
An enhancement can be executed as long as there is enough corneal thickness left after the very first laser treatment if your myopia drops back later on.
Ectasia (weak factor) of the cornea caused by severe thinning during Lasik is actually uncommon nowadays as brand-new client standards have really been embeded in place for its protected method.
People curious about Lasik yet whose corneas are also slim or nearsightedness also high are really thoroughly reviewed out.
PUTTING A LENS IN THE EYE
One more option for your child is ICL surgery.
The reason numerous medical professionals do not recommend ICL very first is that it is an intrusive procedure. The impacts are a great deal much more severe if an infection were to occur inside the eye.
The lenses utilized in this treatment are constructed from collagen as well as the plastic, polymer. The product is retractable, very versatile, and can be removed. It is FDA-approved for those aged 21 to 45.
The lens is put behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) in addition to before the all-natural lens (over).
ICL can manage serious short-sightedness of as much as -20.00 dioptres, as well as likewise long-sightedness of up to +7.00 dioptres.
This method does not consist of improving the cornea as well as likewise relates to less post-operative dry-eye indications. For people with remarkably entirely dry eyes, ICL would definitely be a lot more proper.
When performed well, both vision adjustment strategies have a very reduced price of nearsightedness regression.
For ICL clients, the implants can be transformed to those with a numerous power.
It should certainly be kept in mind that while ICL is reversible, it would definitely require an additional intrusive procedure to remove the dental implanted lenses.
In unusual instances, ICL medical therapy can create glaucoma as well as cataracts , as a result of the distance of the implanted lenses to the person's iris along with natural lens.
If the lens implant is also big, there is a threat that the former chamber of the eye could wind up being shallower, triggering glaucoma by obstructing the eye's drain angle inside.
If the lens dental implant is as well tiny, it might be displaced in reverse, producing a cataract to develop. When such difficulties take location, it will be needed to reverse the ICL treatment.
GOOD OUTCOMES
That asserted, the visual results of both treatments have actually been direct as well as very fantastic.
As Lasik is non-invasive, refractive professionals would typically advise people to do Lasik if they have normal corneal thickness and also their nearsightedness is not exceptionally high. If they are disqualified for Lasik, as a result of a slim cornea in addition to high level of myopia, then ICL implants are thought about.
Both treatments allow cataract surgical treatment in the future.
It has actually been stated that the elimination of corneal cells throughout Lasik might make it a lot more hard to appropriately calculate the power of a lens dental implant for future cataract surgical treatment.
Cutting-edge as well as modern-day mathematical services have made calculations much better than ever in the past.
Nowadays, the estimate of lens power for those that have in fact had Lasik can be as specific when it comes to those who have really not had the treatment.
There is no finest ways to correct your little girl's -8.00 dioptre vision.
A variety of aspects, such as age, refractive mistake, as well as corneal thickness, will help the individual to make the ideal choice for himself.
Your unbiased demands to be to contact an ophthalmologist that is professionals in refractive surgical treatment as well as also who has the capability to provide all the different treatments available.
You can after that evaluation the pros and additionally disadvantages of each approach with the physician before selecting.

What are the different types of Cataract Surgery?
What are Cataracts?
Cataracts are a condition where the clear natural lens of your eyes turns cloudy. This prevents sufficient light from entering your eye, causing it to be scattered and blocked. This causes a vision impairment, which will interfere with daily activities as vision deteriorates. Things will look blurry, hazy or colours might not appear as bright as they used to.
Some symptoms are as listed:
• Vision that is Clouded, blurred or dim
• Difficulty seeing at night
• Sensitivity to light and glare
• Seeing halos around lights
• The need for bright light when reading and performing other tasks
• Fading or yellowing of colours
• Double vision in one eye
It usually occurs due to ageing. However, it may also be caused by family history, having had an eye injury, surgery or radiation treatments on the upper body, certain existing medical conditions or spending a lot of time in the sun. Factors like obesity, smoking and hypertension are also probable causes of cataracts.
Types of Cataracts
There are 4 main types of cataracts.
• Nuclear Cataracts
• Cortical Cataracts
• Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts
• Congenital Cataracts
Nuclear Cataracts
Known to be the most common cataract, the centre of the lens, also known as the nucleus, starts to harden and turn yellow, slowly increasing in radius. Some people might feel that their near vision improves temporarily because of the eye's ability to focus on changes. This might cause difficulty in driving as well as seeing in places with a lack of light. As the cataract slowly progresses, the lens may even turn brown. This will cause difficulty in distinguishing shades of colour.
Cortical Cataracts
Cortical Cataracts are white, wedge-shaped opacities or streaks that form from the outer edge of the lens cortex and grow inwards. This causes light to scatter and increases glare and halos, especially at night or in the rain. This typically occurs in the lens cortex, which is the part surrounding the central nucleus.
Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts
These cataract surgery Singapore. start as a small opaque area that forms on the back surface of the lens, obstructing the path of light. It will interfere with reading vision. There might be halos or glares around lights or a smudge around their vision. Posterior Subcapsular cataracts develop faster than other types.
Congenital Cataracts
These are cataracts that affect people when they are born, or when cataracts develop during childhood. These may be genetic or associated with an infection or trauma. Sometimes the cause may not be known, but it will usually be removed after detection.
Nuclear CataractsCortical Cataracts Posterior Capsular Cataract
Who usually gets Cataracts?
Usually, cataracts are more common among older people, although cataracts can happen at any stage of life. Cataracts are one of the biggest causes of vision loss in people over 40. Nuclear Cataracts are usually associated with ageing, while Cortical Cataracts occur commonly in Diabetic patients. Posterior Subcapsular cataracts are also often seen types in diabetics or those who consume oral steroids. Congenital Cataracts affect children either when they are born, or it develops a couple of years later when they are much older.
Can it be cured?
Vision can be restored if surgery is carried out, as the lens causing issues with opaque spots and clouding of vision can be removed, and replaced by an intraocular lens (IOL).
Types of Surgery
There are a total of 3 types of surgery, where 2 are mostly used. They are:
• Phacoemulsification.
• Extracapsular Cataract Surgery.
• Intracapsular Cataract Surgery.
Phacoemulsification is the most common surgical procedure for cataracts. A small incision is made at the side of the cornea, which is the clear dome-shaped surface that covers the front eye. This procedure is usually carried out by a cataract surgeon, but currently, with the advancement of technology, there is the option to choose laser-assisted cataract surgery or even bladeless laser cataract surgery. The usual procedure is for doctors to insert a probe into the eye which emits ultrasound waves to soften and break the lens up for removal by suction. With laser-assisted or bladeless laser cataract surgery, the incision is made by a laser which is near to perfect. Then, the machine uses a laser to soften and break up the lens, to reduce the energy needed to remove the cataract. This will have a reduced risk of burning and distorting the incision. For the bladeless laser surgery, the whole procedure is 100% carried out by precise technology. This is available as an option for cataract surgery in Singapore.
Extracapsular Cataract Surgery is a procedure used in the case of highly advanced cataracts, which are too dense for phacoemulsification. For this procedure, a slightly larger incision on the side of the cornea is needed so that the cataract can be removed in one piece instead of being fragmented within the eye. The rest of the lens is removed by suction. Through this, the front capsule and cloudy lens comprising the cataract will be removed, leaving the back capsule to hold the artificial lens. Sutures will be needed to close the wound if it is much larger, which would result in a slower recovery of the wound as well as the function to see.
The last procedure is Intracapsular Cataract Surgery, which is now rarely used. It has an even larger incision compared to the previous two procedures. In this surgery, the entire lens with the surrounding capsule is removed. Sutures will be needed to close the flap.
Type of surgeryFeatures.
Phacoemulsification.
Or.
Laser-assisted cataract surgery/ Bladeless laser cataract surgeryMost common.
Sutures not needed.
Faster rate of recovery.
Higher precision rates (for laser).
Extracapsular Cataract SurgeryHighly advanced cataracts.
Sutures not needed if incision isn't very big.
Recovery process takes 1-2 weeks.
Intracapsular Cataract SurgeryLeast common.
Huge incision.
Sutures needed.
After the cataract in the lens has been removed, an artificial lens will be implanted into the eye, completing the procedure. There are 4 types of intraocular lenses (IOL).
• Monofocal.
• Advanced Monofocal.
• Multifocal.
• Accommodative.
Monofocal provides good vision at a specific distance. However, reading glasses might be required for reading.
Advanced Monofocal has Aspheric and Toric lenses. Aspheric lenses provide better vision that is sharper especially in poor lighting conditions. Toric lenses treat astigmatism, which reduces the need for spectacles for distance vision. It is available as an option for both eyes for full distance correction, or Monovision using monofocal lenses. This means that the IOL power is chosen for good distance vision in one eye and good near vision in the other.
Multifocal provides good vision without glasses. For best results, it should be used in both eyes. Multifocal Toric IOL are still available, but they also incorporate the astigmatism correction.
Accommodative provides good distance and intermediate vision without glasses. This should also be used in both eyes.
Conclusion.
The lens chosen is dependent on the kind of lifestyle that you have and see which one fits your needs better. There is no age limit to anyone seeking to get cataract surgery. For young children and babies, instead of using a probe to break down the lens, a suction will be inserted to remove the cataract. In the past, there might be more opportunities for human error as this surgery requires precision and it can be quite tricky with the lack of technology. Now with the quick advancement of technology, this has allowed patients now to go through cataract surgery with a peace of mind as the procedure has been proven to be safe with more technology-aided tools.

"I've tried for 10 years to conceive!"
As the title suggests, I had to wait for 10 years until I was able to finally conceive. This is my story. 10 years ago, when I was 26, I was happily married to my wonderful husband,
David. We both loved children and wanted to have one of our own someday. We didn't really look into doing family planning very seriously, as we were ok to start a family as long as we could conceive.
During the first few years of our marriage, we were both still busy with our careers. We would casually try to have a baby, but it seemed like we weren't able to conceive any children.
At the point of time, we thought "we are still young, it's okay to wait a little longer to have children". David and I were still happy to have each other and didn't let this become an issue between us. Over the years, people would ask us when we were going to have kids, but we simply just told them that we will just "see how". If it happens, it happens.
When I was 32, we decided that it was about time to seriously start trying for a baby, since we are at the prime time to, and we built our careers to a point where we felt that we were stable enough to provide for a child. I was determined to try and conceive, but to my disappointment, we could not conceive.
David was a little upset, but he also did not want to give up and encouraged me, saying "We will eventually be able to, don't feel bad about it". I felt like I couldn't figure out what was the problem and it was frustrating since both of us were healthy and did not have any issues.
I related the problem to our friends, and they empathised with our situation since many of them had young children and they knew how much we yearned to have our own to take care of. They suggested we seek medical attention since it has been years since we started "trying", although it only became more intentional recently. We began looking for a gynae in Singapore, and we stumbled upon a women's clinic that seemed to be the answer to all of our problems.
During our consultations and speaking to the gynae doctor , he understood our struggles and our wish to conceive as soon as possible. He told us that some tests had to be taken to see what were the available options for us to conceive. So we waited for the test results for both David and me to come back, before analysing options to conceive.
When we got back the results, David was cleared to be healthy with no existing issues. However, my results reported low levels of hormones, and because of my irregular periods, I was put on hormonal medication to regulate hormonal levels and to manage my periods. I was on the medication for a couple of months and had to monitor and track down my cycles to carefully calculate the window period in which I was ovulating in order to conceive.
While we met our gynae for regular check-ups to see if it was going well, we had not considered any fertility treatment yet as we wanted to try to naturally conceive. The doctor advised us to go for fertility treatment as it is the fastest way to conceive and the time window for me to conceive was sensitive. However, as David and I preferred to have things go naturally, we decided to spend more time to see if we could still naturally conceive before venturing to other options.
We tried to conceive, even after I consumed the medication that was supposed to help me. However to no avail after months of trying, it was difficult to conceive and I felt really frustrated. I just thought that it was ridiculous that this became such a huge problem and it was so difficult to get pregnant. We went back to the gynae and told him that it was not working out, and we wanted to find a solution to conceive. This was when he suggested that we take on fertility treatment, and we finally decided to take it.
After speaking to the gynae doctor in Singapore and understanding the different fertility treatments that are available, we decided to go for IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation). We decided to prepare for it, and I underwent tests to ensure that I was suitable for the procedure.
During the uterus scans, I found out that I had a benign growth in my uterus, which the gynae diagnosed as Uterine Fibroids. This meant that in order for me to conceive, I had to undergo surgery to remove it.
I was devastated. Why me? I couldn't understand. We were so close to having our own child, and I had to have all these ailments that were preventing me from conceiving. I felt like I had let David down, so I became really depressed for quite a while. David comforted me, telling me that we would go through it together and that he does not blame me for the circumstance that we were in.
We had to wait and schedule an appointment for the surgery, and thereafter, I had to go through a period of recovery before I was able to prepare myself for the IVF procedure. The gynae was very patient and explained the entire process to us gently and clearly, walking with us throughout the entire process. I was really grateful for that, and the support of my husband. Within a year, I was able to successfully conceive after 10 years, at the age of 36.
Right now, I am in my third trimester and are expecting to give birth to our wonderful baby girl in 4 weeks time. David and I are really excited and thrilled to start our next phase of life, and I'm really happy that fertility treatment has given us a second chance to have kids of our own. The journey has been filled with ups and downs which definitely tested us as a couple and individuals, but certainly, we have grown stronger from this incident, and I would want this to be able to encourage others who are trying to conceive to not give up, as it is ultimately possible.

The Benefits Of Personal Training
A new gym equals unchartered territory. It means stripping yourself of what you already know and letting your guard down and putting your body into the hands of another set of weights, or better yet, a personal trainer.
Using a personal trainer, whether it's for one session, one month, or one year, is one of the best things that anyone can do for him or herself because it allows the focus to be on you. It's wonderful to learn what your body needs and what exercises your body reacts to through someone who has immense knowledge of fitness, nutrition, and health. It's a personal cheerleader who wants you to succeed, whether you're just looking for a good workout or working towards a certain goal.
Why would you hire a personal trainer or a coach? Isn't that for pros and wannabe athletes? Not necessarily-- the benefits of personal training extend beyond super goal-oriented athletes.
Whether you're someone who is just starting their fitness journey or a seasoned gym goer/recreational athlete with a solid fitness level, having a personal trainer or a coach can help you meet your fitness goals faster, safer and more effectively-- or gain better results or simply learn to enjoy exercise more than you ever thought was possible.
The benefits of personal training can be endless but here I've broken down my top 7 reasons why hire a PT or a sports specific coach and how you can make the best of having one.
1. Individual Expert
In a world diluted with influencers and fitness "pros", you can't beat expert advice from a qualified and experienced professional.
A qualified PT is the expert you need to provide you tailored advice and exercises, whether you're goal is to:
• Complete your first marathon or triathlon
• Improve your sporting game
• Charge up your training
• Maximize your time and effort
The benefits of Singapore personal trainer and expert advice are unquestionable if you're:
• Suffering or recovering from an injury
• Working out during pregnancy
• Getting back to exercising post natal
2. Safe, Suitable and Specific Programming
Everyone's goals differ which is why if you take two people and do the same online program you will likely get different results.
Investing in a PT means you get:
• Personalised training
• Encouragement and guidance on how to try new movements, and workouts
• A wider variety of exercise in your training routine
Safe and suitable programming is one of the top benefits of personal training and particularly important if you have any contraindications to exercise, injuries, pre/post natal or post menopausal.
3. Motivation and Accountability
When exercising on your own it can be easy to skip a session, snooze your alarm clock or cheat a set. A personal training will keep you accountable and push your workouts to the next level while providing motivation throughout each session and the duration of your program.
4. Fresh Ideas and Inspiration
It can be easy to fall into the same workout habits and eventually get bored with your workout routine. In addition to affecting your mood and motivation, this is a common cause of training plateau and you may be left wondering why you're not seeing results from working out.
And in case you ever run out of ideas, there are a variety of tools that provide with your workout suggestions, such as the
A personal trainer can bring much-needed variety and a fresh perspective and new viewpoints to challenge both your body and mind. You can use these learnings and inspiration even after your PT program ends.
5. Efficiency
PT's conduct a needs analysis and use their expertise to create a tailored and individual fitness plan to help you maximise results in a timely manner, increasing the efficiency of your exercise program.
This is especially beneficial if you have limited time to exercise-- you know, nothing out of the ordinary, just the usual full-time job, family and social commitments-- and you want to capitalize on the time you spend working out. Effective workouts with a personal trainer will make sure you'll have time for other important things in your life.
6. Support.
One of the perhaps less known benefits of personal training is that it's much more than fitness. Personal trainers act as unofficial therapists and can provide a great source of connection. Sure, they'll help you reach your fitness goals but they also care about your well-being and can assist in improving not only your physical, but mental health.
7. Results.
Depending on your goals and budget, you may use a personal trainer once a week or once a month. If you're not sure, just try it out once to see if it's right for you.
Many great trainers also provide information, tools and resources on your nutrition and lifestyle habits to maximize your results. That is something you can take with you and incorporate in your journey to healthy, active living in the long term.

Mum Nearly Went Blind!"
My Mum Nearly Went Blind!"
On my mum's 59th birthday, we went out for a lovely dinner at Robertson Quay. She loved her Greek food and so we went with the family and grandparents to one of her favourite restaurants. My mum doesn't work, she stays home, loves to cook and makes the best home cooked food. During her free time, she would knit, read her kindle, garden whilst getting some fresh air, talk to her sisters on the phone - she was always doing something.
Eyesight became worse
Six months after her birthday, it was in the summer of 2018 she started complaining a lot about her vision. I remember her mistaking oyster sauce from soya sauce even after reading the labels (but maybe because both are black and red in colour and labelling), but mistaking salt for sugar in the food because she could not read the labels without her glasses, was a problem for her in the kitchen.
Her eyesight was gradually getting worse, when she had asked whether I had seen her bok choy which she thought was spinach. I could also tell that she was getting easily irritated when she could not read messages from her phone or struggled more and more to read her kindle. We went to see an eye specialist who diagnosed mum with Cataract just before her 60th birthday. He advised for mum to be given a second opinion at a clinic specialising in cataract surgery in Singapore.
Cataract is an eye disease, usually developed in elderlies ages from 60 - 75 years old. As we get older, it is normal that our eyesight deteriorates. It is not surprising if you notice how we live everyday, we are fixed on our phones, laptops, whatever technology - TV or even books.
As our eyes due to our lifestyle are constantly strained, it's just a natural process that occurs. Whether we like it or not, we must face the consequences of using our eyes too much growing up! When we reach a certain age, everything in our vision becomes a little blurrier and can get quite frustrating. I saw that with mum, she never used to complain in her 40s or 50s, she wore glasses but it was never a big deal. The cataract surgeon explained that usually the eye disease only gets serious later on, when the functions of the eye stop working like they should naturally.
Visit A Cataract Surgeon
Visiting the clinic specializing in cataract surgery in Singapore was a big help to keep my mum's eye condition under control. They helped a lot with monitoring and advising what the next step of prevention was for the problem to get any worse. Also, made sure she was fit and in a stable condition from going blind.
Earlier this year, in Jan 2020, mum had scheduled another appointment at the clinic. In good timing, the cataract surgeon advised that mum needed to do a cataract surgeon to prevent her eyesight from getting any worse.
It was always a good idea to regularly check up with her cataract surgeon because if it wasn't for her appointment that determined she needed surgery, it would have been devastating to see mum going almost blind. The active busy bee turned into a stinging bee that almost lost sight of where she was going until cataract surgery saved her sight!
