Discovering Myself Pt.1 : My Love Language
So, Iâve been doing some reading. Have any of you heard of:Â
This book in particular is about couples, but the author has written one for singles. Anyway, Iâve looked into this before. Basically, there are 5 ways you wish to receive/give affection. From what Iâve read (and if anyone has read it and thinks Iâm interperting it wrong, please tell me!), most people want and give the same type of language. There are those who give and wish to receive different things, but itâs not as common.
So, years ago, I had taken it and this was what I had found, from my primary language down:
* Physical Touch
* Quality Time
* Acts of Service
* Words of Affirmation
* Receiving Gifts
When I was dating my boyfriend, according to this, we were perfect. His love languages were in a similar arrangement. However, after noticing that I was having trouble being physical with him, after spending two and a half years dating and a little over a year living together, I started noticing that we didnât seem as aligned anymore. I was getting frustrated with him, I was pulling away.
Last week, I took the quiz again and these were my results:
*Acts of Service
*Quality Time
*Words of Affirmation
*Physical Touch
*Receiving Gifts
For the latest quiz, I took both the In a Relationship and Single quizzes. The results, while slightly different numbers, were the same.
So, I have to wonder: Did my recent relationship change the type of love I wish to give/receive or did it show me what I really am since the first time I took the quiz, I had never been in a relationship...
Iâm not sure which is correct, but what I do know is that I feel the results are correct now. And they apply to not just romantic relationships, but any sort of relationship in my life. And itâs why Iâm realizing Iâm still frustrated with my ex/now roommate. Weâre still not on a similar page as friends. I feel like Iâm doing a lot of things by myself, that he doesnât pitch in, that he doesnât care.
For example, I just cleaned our apartment (kitchen, bathroom, most of the living room) while he was playing a video game. Weâve been here for a few weeks now and it was high time we did some cleaning. I was actually waiting him out to see if he would volunteer we both do something, or if he would even do something on his own. Nothing. So, I did it myself. He knew I was doing this because he asked if I was finished with the bathroom because he needed to go. He hasnât even said a measly thank you for doing the chores.
And, we may have a leak in our laundry room. He told me and I had made the suggestion that âheâ wipes the water up and we use the washer one more time to see if itâs us or someone else. He didnât have anything to wash, so I was going to do some of mine. I saw him grab a towel before I said Iâd wash my clothes. After separtating my clothes to make a load, I go into the laundry room and the puddle is still there. I asked, to be sure, if he had wiped it up and if this was new water. Nope, he didnât touch it. Apparently, after I said I was going to wash, he didnât need to clean up the water.
For a split second, I wanted to cry (and now Iâm barely holding it in now as I write). Why wonât he help me? I just cleaned everything else in the apartment. While yes, you didnât actually spill water on the floor, it happened with your clothes. You couldnât get it up? I have to send the message to maintenance? I have to do everything?
These were feelings I had when we were together, but I never told him. I know one of my faults is not communicating what Iâm feeling. Itâs always been like that. Iâm better on something like this, a blog that I figure wonât be read.Â
And heâs back on the game. And Iâm here complaining and not saying anything about it. Iâm just pathetic.
