The Secret Garden + Scenerygasm
Portrait of a Musician, detail: hand and sheet music booklet (c.1515-1520). Il Pordenone (Italian, Venetian School, 1483–1539). Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien.
Il Pordenone, byname of Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis, was a vigorous chiaroscurist and flesh painter. The 1911 Britannica states that “so far as mere flesh-painting is concerned he was barely inferior to Titian in breadth, pulpiness and tone.”
Favourite films: The Secret Garden (1993)
The secret garden is always open now. Open, and awake, and alive. If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.
Portrait of Florence Hooton playing the cello (1936). Wilfred de Glehn (British, 1870-1951). Oil on canvas. Royal Academy of Music.
Hooton (1912-1988), student, fellow and professor, Royal Academy of Music, is shown full-length, looking to the viewer. Wearing a long white dress, her left hand is on the fingerboard, and her right arm is extended, with her bow resting on the strings. Youthful, and with her fair hair hanging down and framing her face.
