My initial experiments for my editorial featured hand written pull out quotes from peoples writings. I want to bring them back as they make the piece feel more personable. Each quote is unique but talks about something that overarches every bodies experience as an army brat.

monopoly

Thinking about existing games and how I can rework the mechanics to expresse the experience of growing up as an army brat. Key features including, moving around often and randomly and gaining lots of friends and skills.

Monopoly is a board game currently published by Hasbro. In the game, players roll two six-sided dice to move around the game board, buying and trading properties, and developing them with houses and hotels. Players collect rent from their opponents, with the goal being to drive them into bankruptcy. Money can also be gained or lost through Chance and Community Chest cards, and tax squares; players can end up in jail, from which they cannot move until they have met one of several conditions. The game has numerous house rules, and hundreds of different editions exist, as well as many spin-offs and related media. Monopoly has become a part of international popular culture, having been licensed locally in more than 103 countries and printed in more than 37 languages

It was intended as an educational tool to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. Lizzie Magie took out a patent in 1904. Her game, The Landlord's Game, was self-published, beginning in 1906.

My portfolio

My business cards are designed to be laser cut. This allows my logo to act as a stencils for spray painting, chalk rubbing, to be used as a bobbin, a plant stem tag, or to be doodled through while on the phone. I feel this compliments my branding.

Once the cards were all printed, glued and trimmed, I used a corner cutter to round the corners and make them nicer to play with.

Due to the printing of the cards, they became much thicker than anticipated, this meant that the box was far too small. They would be better suited in a solid soft open box. Due to time contraints I couldn’t physically mock this up.

The colours had to be trialed here aswell to ensure they came out correct, consistent and the blues were recognisably different from eachother to ensure easy gameplay.

Due to the coating on the paper, no ink could soak in. This left all the prints completely wet and the details were flooded. We resorted to printing on single sided photography paper and double backing it by hand.

After countless trials on the ink jet printer to get the colours right the images started looking posterised and the type and light line details were looking thick and heavy. With the recognition of a digital submission I made the compromise of printed what best I could on a laser printer knowing I could fix colours of mockups in post but wouldn’t be able to do the same with type and image.

Paper selection. Inspired by the blueys that are printed on simple office paper I was looking for a thin gsm. However with the vibrant images and thick hand-drawn elements I am cautious of it being see through. I settled on 100 gsm ‘natural white’ for the spreads and 150 for a slightly thicker cover. I went much thicker for the cards with 250 gsm satin finish and a touch thicker again for the box to ensure its structure. The card paper is a much more stark white so I will have to be sure to balance my off white background colours.

The addition of the hand written names on the friend cards gives them more character. I chose to strip back the textures and rebalance the type to match the action cards. The lino cut icons feel more cohesive with the project.

The first icons after cutting and printing them I found too clinical. The handshake was formal and the cogs were mechanical. I redrew one each that both included a person to relate the friends and skills to a personable level. These felt much more friendly and egaging.

This is the current box design for my cards, it is a simple tab box that captures the busy elements of the editorial so they fit together as a set without being physically attached. My hand writing needs to be added but I feel it is almost there design wise.

I keep playing with the design of my playing crads but am not settled on it. I am struggling to know what to put on them that makes sense to the card and captures the busy design of the editorial. Here I have stripped them bare to re evaluate them. I feel the actiomn cards are there and want to revisit using icons on the friend and skill cards.

Glossary

Here you can see I have filled out the glossary so that it fills both pages on the spread and adjusted the type to match the rest fo the editorial. I made sure to go through and old print test and pick out any army slang specifically mentioned to go in aswell as speaking to my dad on the phone about any he feels stand out. Some are funny others are more informative but I feel it is a strong way to engage with the audience, especially if they are civi.

Where my voice interjetcs in the interviews I have shortened the line lengths to a quater of a collumn so that the type bunches together nicer.

Contents page

I wanted a contents page that fits the dot-to-dot line graphics throughout the editorial. I started with a more sporadic look to start but settled on something that looked more like a timeline and echos the family tree on one of my spreads.
