She sort of did seem like the type, but it wasn’t as if Milo was about to admit that out loud. “ I take it you were there, then? ”

“ That makes two of us, at least. I’m not entirely sure, but I’ve heard something about multiple disappearances? I just hope they’ve been found and they’re okay, y’know? ”

Ben beamed happily as he bounded over to the booth at the very corner of the cafe, where one of their regulars was contentedly sat alone, fully immersed in a book that covered his face. “Hey, dude! Watcha readin’?” {@milopomme}

Milo had probably had his nose buried in his book for at least an hour by the time Ben pulled his attention from the pages. It had felt like merely minutes, but that wasn’t entirely out of norm for him--- he tended to lose track of time while reading. “ It’s a biography... about... the Chancellor of Germany, ” he answered slowly, realizing halfway through how weird that sounded. Still, he flashed the cover toward Ben, the title written in German. The entire book was written in German, in fact. It probably would’ve only made him seem more weird, though Ben had never seemed to mind.

“Mhm. It’s a damn shame, and no one seems to know anything. At least, from what I understand. They had to have been drugged, but I don’t know at what part.”

“ No one? Not even the missing guests that turned up? ” This story only got weirder and weirder with each eyewitness account that he heard. “ Is that what the police are saying? That they were drugged? I’m trying to follow the story but it doesn’t seem like they’re releasing much of a statement. ”

“ Blair, ” Milo started, sighing in exasperation. “ You can see how that doesn’t make any logical sense, right? ”

“The party Marie was throwing to announce her next play’s theme, yeah. That’s why it all seemed like some elaborately staged hoax when the five of them vanished. It really was like something that couldn’t have been written any better; lights plunging mid murder mystery party speech and five people missing when they flicked back on.”

“ But... it wasn’t staged, was it? They ended up finding the missing people? ” It was a hard concept for Milo to wrap his head around, but then again, it probably wasn’t all too easy for anyone else to put together either. He really should start going to events more often, if only to stay informed. “ Unless they’re still playing some kind of prank. But that seems really unnecessary to me. ”

“I’m not the best person to be talking about this to. I only went because a very close friend of mine asked, and we left early.” Lucius shook his head slowly, but smiled slightly, the corner of his lip turning upward. “You should have seen me, Milo. I had on a genuine pinstripe suit. Me.”

“ A very close friend, huh? ” Milo teased, a wide smile coming over him at the appearance of a rare smile-like quality across his friend’s lips. “ A pinstripe suit, ” he repeated, considering it. “ Y’know, I think I’d kill to see pictures of that. ”

“ Really? So those things aren’t as rigged as originally thought. Though it did take you over fifteen dollars to achieve anything, so they’re probably still the winners here. ”

“You forget, my salary isn’t much better, and I live alone.” He’d heard the complaint so many times before, that teachers aren’t paid enough. They weren’t, but he wasn’t about to get into an argument about salary and budgeting with Milo. Lucius was a minimalist. And he didn’t have to spend money on a grocery bill. Or heating. Turns out vampirism lead to a lesson in frugality. He frowned when Milo laughed at his admission to enjoying his company. Then again, Lucius frowned at most things. “You don’t think you’re a a worthwhile person?” he questioned, one brow quirking upward slightly for inflection. “I may have been Oswald’s grumpy houseguest, but it always made me happy that he had you. I only wish I had someone similar growing up.” Was it so hard to accept that Lucius could think the world of someone like Milo? They weren’t altogether dissimilar. He didn’t blame Milo or Oswald for not seeking him out when he’d disappeared for so long. The two of them were busy building a life together. Not to mention, it was Lucius who’d left in the first place. He didn’t belong in their world. “Besides, maybe I was jealous he had someone when I didn’t.” It wasn’t like Lucius could ask Oz to share his friend as if he were some kind of object. “It’s interesting to finally talk to you separately.”

“ Ah, see, I’m not complaining to you, I’m complaining with you. It’s a requirement to exist in this household, ” Milo joked. Was he calling himself and his roommate whiny? Well... yes, actually. They did like to express their distaste, that was for sure. A crease formed between his eyebrows in response to Lucius’s question. That wasn’t what he had meant, was it? Though, the more he thought about it, the more he found himself wondering what he had meant by his words. “ I’m just... not really the first person anyone thinks to come to when they need to talk. ” Ah yes, that was it. The only person who had ever really talked to Milo--- beyond the surface, at least--- was Oswald. And, well, they lived together, that was bound to happen. But Milo was more of an academic than anything else. He’d gotten used to it. At Luc’s comment, Milo simply set his gaze upon the other, a small stretch of silence before he spoke up again. “ That’s bullshit, ” he answered softly, and though he didn’t curse often, he felt as if there was no better word. “ You always had both of us, it just took you long enough to realize it. ” Because the only thing better than a duo was a trio, and middle school Milo had no objections at all to an older kid taking any sort of interest in his company. Even if it was his best friend’s older brother. “ Yeah? I could say the same to you. ”

“ Hard one, but I’m gonna have to say French. If only because once my first year French students discover that my last name quite literally means ‘ apple ‘, it’s the most laughs I can get out of them for the whole year. ”
