I'll leave this up for a couple days before I nuke this blog
I'm not active on here much anymore, but will probably nuke this blog soon if I'm being honest. I'm tired of watching sad people with nothing better to do shit on my friend because they had the audacity to make popular content. I'm tired of this dumpster fire of a website. It's awful for my mental health and I get nothing out of it anymore.
I'll still be writing, but my time here has come to a close.
Booty shorts that say “you have already left kudos here” on the ass
so just imagine
your dragonborn gets named thane, gets another house, gets another housecarl
and the housecarl is sooooo excited to get to serve the dragonborn, but then said dragonborn rolls in with some asshole cocky follower in tow (teldryn, jenassa, marcurio, j’zargo…) and it turns out the housecarl isn’t gonna get to go fight beside the dragonborn. they’re not gonna carry their burdens. they’re just gonna……stay here and carl the house.
but the dragonborn hangs around the new house for a few weeks to build relationships in town, refresh their supplies, earn some local goodwill. so the housecarl has to put up with the follower. and the follower can just feel the housecarl’s resentment. their growing hate. their conviction that they would be far better suited to properly honor the dragonborn’s status and protect the dragonborn’s life.
and the tension just grows. they’re posturing at each other while cleaning the dishes. glaring daggers over dinner. sweaty “training sessions” nearly erupting into actual violence. the tension in the house gradually hitting a boiling point.
so basically what i’m saying is
imagine the hatesex.
imagine the porn.
#teldryn’s sweaty muscly hatesex with validmar#jordis domming the hell out of marcurio#rayya’s dangerous sharp-edged rapidly escalating Thing with jenassa#IM JUST SAYING
anti this character, anti that movie, can’t you just shut up and enjoy the things you like
because what is your goddamn point? are there points for hating 24/7? do you get some money for anti-ing a thing? respect? is it about respect? you’re respected for posting bullshit posts about why and how someone should anti a character because you don’t like them? are you being paid for this? just help me understand because i don’t get it and it doesn’t go anywhere. your anti-ing doesn’t go anywhere. as a matter of fact, it only makes people cringe, get angry, and leave a fandom in the best case ‘cause they can’t stand whiny asses like you. you don’t bring anything to any fandom but longer or shorter essays about a movie/character you hate because this and that, let alone that your arguments are in 80% of cases unrelated to anything and taken out of your ass just because, and why people also should hate that character/movie even though your dislike is often based on personal beliefs and preferences, and nobody cares about those essays. nobody but you and people just as pathetic like you.
why not focus on what you enjoy and what you’re interested in? why waste your time on blogging round-the-clock about things you hate? it’s a pure waste of time, energy, and effort that you could put into something productive that would actually bring some good to this already sad and hateful world.
An ex-friend of mine is like this. We started out in the same fandoms, but over the course of two years everything became about what is and isn’t problematic to her. She started seeing the bad in everything. All those movies we used to talk about on the phone, the video games we’d text each other about in all caps, the ships we made playlists for and joked about, all of it slowly became Problematic ™ to her. Everything that used to make her smile turned into something she couldn’t admit to liking without her friends online and off telling her she was bad. She was an abuse supporter because she liked Steve/Tony and the MCU had them fight each other and even if you write an AU where Civil War didn’t happen, you’re bad. She was normalizing abuse by liking Invader Zim, a wacky dark comedy. She was racist for liking Avatar the Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra since those shows don’t have a one-to-one representation of Asian cultures. (I, a mixed Asian person, spent an hour soothing her as she sobbed over the phone about not wanting to be a bad person. She isn’t. Her liking the show didn’t hurt me.)
Nobody wants to be racist. Nobody wants to think they’re into something bad or promoting something bad. She gave up what she enjoyed bit by bit because she didn’t want to be bad or do bad things. She didn’t want to hurt people. She didn’t want to hurt me, her queer mixed POC friend, by watching Voltron if that had bad POC representation or Steven Universe if that had bad queer representation. So she dropped show after show, game after game, book after book, until she had a handful of things left that she allowed herself to enjoy - if she pointed out every little problem in it.
Like an Evangelical Christian, she tried to save me from Being Problematic ™ after a while. Give up your bad queer rep cartoons and abuse apologist superhero movies and sexist books and racist video games and you’ll be better! People will stop harassing you! Everyone will be nice to you if you just change everything you like overnight and use the right words and get offended by all the right things! She could not understand that I was okay with myself. I have flaws, but I’m a good person, I do good things, I work regularly with a wonderful charity, I treat my friends well. I do not think all of that goes out the window because I laugh at Invader Zim or think Tom Hiddleston’s performance as Loki is the best part of the first Thor movie. The distance between us got worse the more I refused to give things up and the more her friends convinced her to give everything up because her blog posts, texts and phone calls weren’t happy anymore. We weren’t making jokes and sending each other fic and art like before. We weren’t creating playlists for crackships or coming up with Star Wars AUs where Ben Solo became a lounge singer.
We weren’t doing anything. She was screaming at all times about all the things she hated about all the shows, games, movies and more that her friends also hated. She was finding problematic elements in the first episodes of shows as they went live. She was proclaiming that movie trailers normalized abusive tropes. Her content was radically different from mine and our friendship didn’t die in an explosive blowout, it died when she blocked me for reblogging a Rapunzel/Flynn gifset because they have an age gap so that’s pedophilia normalization. That used to be her ultimate Disney OTP; she loved them, loved Rapunzel, loved Disney.
She hates Rapunzel, Rapunzel/Flynn, and Disney now. She hates the MCU, hates Star Wars, hates superhero movies, hates Avatar and Korra, hates fanfic, hates ships, hates, hates, hates, hates.
But she’s right that people leave her alone now. People don’t harass her over ships now. People don’t send her inbox hate anymore.
Because no one really talks to her about anything.
A lot of antis see being an anti as protection. It’s an insulation against being hated, a shield against pushback, a way of insuring your own safety. It’s a balm that soothes over your conscience and tells you that you’re a good person. You’re not racist, you’re not into abuse, you’re not part of the problem, you are not bad because people are saying you aren’t. But on some level, you don’t believe them. The paranoia these groups create informs your own self-worth’s fragility. You may be good now, but you know one wrong reblog could bring all your hard work crumbling down. So you can’t get out. You have to keep hating, banning, ‘canceling’, calling out, decrying, burning bridges, forever.
They can’t stop screaming or they’ll be dogpiled. They can’t enjoy something with even the tiniest flaw or they’ll be hated, banned, cancelled, called out, decried.
It’s not about the fandom. That is not the point. Fuck the fandom.
It’s about protecting yourself from the cult mob group you’ve accidentally, gradually joined. That is the point. Not a point, the point, the only thing that matters.
And fuck your friends if they don’t understand.
You’ve heard of competing access needs. Now consider:
Competing representation needs.
But no, seriously. This is one of the biggest things that pits people against each other in fandom spaces.
You’ve got people who need stories where men get to have completely platonic deep friendships with other men, need stories where men can be affectionate and support each other emotionally without it having to be romance. You’ve also got people who need stories about men being romantic with men. Both of these are valid. Whether either is canon doesn’t really matter because transformative works are allowed to be transformative and transformative works are works in their own right. It’s right there in the name.
But because there can only be One True Fanon, instead of acknowledging that different people have different needs and taking a live-and-let-live approach, you usually end up with both groups fighting to throw the other one under the bus first for trying to “steal” their representation.
Please no Oppression Olympics clowning on this post. Everyone needs stories. It’s an immutable part of the human condition.
I normally stay out of shit like this, but I want to say a thing because I’m cranky and it’s keeping me distracted from other things in my life that are making me feel awful this week:
It is perfectly okay to not like things depicted in fiction. It is okay to be disgusted by them, hurt by them, angered by them.
It is not okay to say that those things should not exist in fiction or art, or that people who enjoy them are monsters or even endorse them in real life.
I am a librarian, and one of my Hills I Will Fucking Die On is intellectual freedom. This means that people are allowed to read/etc whatever they want, for whatever reason they want. I of course do not support fascism or hate speech or child pornography (which has a very specific definition, and I do not support it in any way where children are being harmed), but books and art are things that can be ignored, and even studied academically or read by people who don’t agree with them, etc.
When I was getting my Master’s degree in library science, the woman who advised my thesis is one of the leading scholars on book banning, book challenges, and censorship. She has written books, served on boards, etc.
She told me that, no matter what political or moral or religious position a challenge is coming from, they all have one thing in common: we believe that reading is so powerful that it can change us, and we do not trust certain groups to change in the way we want. And those groups are: women, children, people of color (especially black people), and queer people.
We do not trust that these groups can handle fiction that is deemed problematic or harmful, we infantilize them and make that decision for them. We say that Fifty Shades of Grey is going to give women unrealistic idea about BDSM and they will get hurt, while we completely ignore the thousands of violent thrillers written by and for men.
We say that transgressive fiction (incest, necrophilia, pedophilia, etc etc) should not exist, that people should not create or consume it, that people who do endorse that in real life.
Societies of all types have been having this argument forever. What is and isn’t allowed to be in fiction. This is how we get obscenity trials. Book bans. Authors arrested.
Howl went through an obscenity trial. Ulysses went through an obscenity trial. Dorian Gray didn’t get published in its uncensored form until 2011. The American Library Association has Banned Books week every year where they list the top ten books that have the most challenges, and most of them have LGBT content, and others are “canon” like Slaughterhouse Five, Catcher in the Rye, Harry Potter, etc. These books aren’t even considered transgressive fiction!
Now. When this argument is happening with regards to fan fiction and fanworks, I don’t think it has the same cultural severity as published fiction, but it does reflect the same mindset, and that’s fucking scary to me.
I encourage you to read up on book banning and transgressive fiction:
Book Banning in 21st Century America by Emily JM Knox (my former graduate adviser!!!)
Banned Books Week
Transgressive Fiction
A list of books on obscenity trials with info on where to get them from libraries
A list of books on the history of censorship in the United States and where to get them from libraries
A list of books on censorship of fiction and where to get them from libraries
A list of books on literature and morals and where to get them from libraries
And I encourage you to check the subject terms on these books, because there’s a whole lot more I’m not including but these are some good basics.
Post script:
Do not fucking call people degenerates. That term is rooted in white supremacy like, pre-Nazi, and is used by fascists to label those who do not fit the fascist ideal of a person (white, cishet, able-bodied, etc.)
I might call myself a decadent degenerate, but I’m queer and I’m allowed and I don’t call other people that.
EDIT: Also, don’t be like “oh you can write about X but only if you make it clear it’s Bad.” Nope also bad.
Edit part two electric boogaloo: The fact that I say “don’t call people who write/read/like transgressive fiction degenerates” is not censorship. Hate speech and slurs hurt people. They are also not fiction and therefore not the subject of this post. The discussion of hate speech is another discussion entirely, but me saying “hey it’s not cool to do this” does not equal you facing literal punishment from the state for doing it.
mephala, playing eight games of chess at once: so what have you been up to, brother dear

thats really what i mean by how frustrated i get with the insistence that game mechanics and shortcuts are all meant to be taken as lore/worldbuilding. like i think its safe to assume that the reason daedra hearts look exactly the same and are the same size and shape regardless of where it comes from are probably because theres no practical reason for them to texture several heart variations, not because they all actually are identical.
please let go of the practicalities of the videogame a little ..let yourself be creative.. let yourself go apeshit
Some Athis art cause the guy looks cool and he kind of sounds like Jeremy Irons.

Full offense but sometimes fandom just totally make up the characterization of a character and then complain when that isn’t canon
the types of media i like can be placed in one of two categories:
type 1: oh my god this thing is amazing, i love it, i could go on hours long rants about how well executed it was. it has its faults but overall it's excellent.
type 2: i didn't say it was good, i said i liked it
Hey there!! I just read some of your fics and they're ABSURDLY good and made me cry a little!!! "Midblossom" was so perfect in too many ways to explain... the DANGER... the YEARNING... SO good. I typed up Many Thoughts but it ended up being WAY too much to fit into an ask box. Apparently you can't send links thru asks either. >:( Idk what format would work... tumblr doesn't let me show my appreciation for ur fics nearly enough. Either way ur amazing thank u so much!!!
I don't know how to properly respond to compliments, especially ones as nice and unexpected as this one, but thank you so much! This feels like an inadequate expression of my feelings! Please rest assured that I will be walking around in a happy little bubble because of this for the next several days. I appreciate it immensely.
