So as some of you know I am trying to afford having some dental work but that has been put on hold for the moment to help cover bills.

I am very close to my paternal grandfather and right now he has reached the point of needing caregivers fulltime. His insurance will only pay for 30 hours a week, so my family and I are making up the rest. Because I don't have children, I made the call to spend two days a week as his caregiver.

My job is being super accommodating and letting me cut down my days while keeping me listed as full time so I don't loose my benefits, but it does mean taking a significant pay cut for a little while, since my off days will be FMLA and my state doesn't pay leave. I am in a librarian, my salary is hard to stretch at the best of time. At this point I am not getting paid for the time I spend caregiving as it's outside the 30 hours a week insurance deems reasonable for caring for a dying person. I love my grandfather very much, he has always been the most supportive person in my family, especially when it came to me coming out, so while it's hard work, I know I'm doing what I can for him. However, it does mean I myself need some help so I can continue to do it.

Is it really just a me thing that it's genuinely more difficult to read things in dark mode. Like. White text on a dark background starts sort of swimming when i try to read it and i Can do it but it's way more tiring for me. But i guess that's not a thing for many other people??? ¿ ?

It’s not just a you thing! I get this exact issue too right down to the text “swimming”. If I persevere and keep reading anyway, then once I stop, text keeps swimming for a good few minutes or longer afterwards and I can’t really read for shit at all.

Which similarly (re your tags) is why I hate a) having dark mode forced on me and b) the jokes about people who use light mode. Like hey man. I can’t See.

It also makes things swim mildly for me, something to do with the contrast I think. But light mode gives me migraines, so I pick the lesser of the evils. If apps have a middleground dark mode that isn't as contrasty, I'll usually pick that. I liked discord's dark gradients, but lost them when I stopped paying for nitro.

So fun fact ( from my eye doctor) if you have astigmatism and/or a high perscription in your glasses or contacts dark mode often IS harder on you eyes than light mode! Its called the halation effect and it happens because your eye perceives light in a more scattered formation than people without astigmatism, creating halos around the lighter letters and making them fuzzy or vibrating. Its the same reason you might see halos around headlights at night!
