cat on the run || mina & miles

Miles had been taking Duke out for a walk when he’d heard his name. He tuned his head towards the direction of the woman running toward him. His body tensed, not for fear of her, but fear that something might have happened to her. In this town, you could never know what might have happened to someone.
He hadn’t known Mina very well until the last few months. He was pretty sure she’d been in the same class as one of his younger siblings, a couple years below him at school, but they’d never really had a proper conversation. That was, until he’d found her wandering at the side of the road with no memory of how she got there.
“Hey, you alright? What’s up?” He unclenched a little, realising this was about a cat. If he could track down missing people in the woods and mountains, surely he could find a lost cat. “Okay, take a breath. We got this. You got anything he uses? Like a blanket or something?”
At his advice Mina took a breath in, too sharp to do any good, but after few more shaky attempts she was back to breathing in some approximation of normalcy. She looked down at the food container in her hand, peeling tape on the top reading NOT FOR PENNY in green Sharpie’d letters. “I, uh, yeah I do. I got this because I thought he’d show up if there was food, but...” She gestured back at the house. “He’s got this stuffed elephant that he likes to sleep with? Do you think that would work?”
As she spoke she scanned the bushes nearby, hoping to see a slightly-crossed pair of eyes staring back at her, but no such luck. “I’ll just run inside and grab it if you don’t mind waiting out here? My boyfriend doesn’t like people coming in when he’s not home and my other cat has some, like, dog-related issues.” Said issues would likely result in more harm to the dog than to Penny, but it would be best to keep them apart either way.
