One of the men had a dangling earring and a stud, so I told him I liked his earrings. So he told me about how when he first got his ears pierced, he lost a stud and had to borrow an earring from his girlfriend to keep the hole from closing up. Well the only one she had to lend him was a dangling pink fuzzy duck. And everyone made fun of him for wearing it until they realized he didn't give a fuck what they thought. So now he always wears one stud and one dangling earring.

Epilogue: The Wedding Night

The laughter from the reception still echoed faintly through the halls when Shepard closed the door behind them. The room was quiet now, lit only by the soft glow of lanterns Tali had insisted on placing in the corners. The hum of Rannoch’s night drifted through the open balcony, cool air carrying the scent of sand and starlight.

Shepard leaned against the door, breathless with the kind of giddy happiness she hadn’t felt in years. Her gown shimmered in the light, hair falling loose from where Liara had pinned it earlier. Kaidan stood a few steps away, jacket slung carelessly across a chair, his dark eyes fixed on her like she was the only thing in the galaxy.

“You’re staring,” she teased softly.

He smiled, slow and unguarded. “I’ve been waiting a long time to stare.”

The words warmed her, and she laughed — a quiet, breathless sound that still surprised her. For so long, she had carried the weight of war, of loss, of silence. But tonight was different. Tonight was theirs.

Kaidan crossed the room, his movements steady, reverent. His hands found hers, fingers tracing the calluses and scars that marked her palms. He lifted one to his lips, kissing it gently, then let his touch wander — up her arm, along her shoulder, across the line of her jaw. Every curve, every scar, every place the war had touched her, he traced as though memorizing a map.

She shivered under his touch, her smile soft, almost shy. “I thought we’d never have this night,” she admitted, her voice catching. “I thought it was gone, like so much else.”

He leaned close, his lips brushing her ear. “It was never gone. Just waiting for us.”

She turned, meeting his gaze, and for a long moment they simply breathed together. Then her smile faltered, her eyes shimmering with something heavier. She lifted a hand to his face, cupping his cheek gently, her thumb brushing across the lines that grief and time had carved there.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. Her voice trembled, but her touch was steady. “For being gone. For letting you hurt. For not reaching out when I could’ve, when maybe—” She stopped, tears rising. “I’m so sorry, Kaidan.”

His breath caught, but he shook his head, covering her hand with his own, pressing it harder against his cheek. “No. Don’t. None of that matters now. You came back to me, Shepard. That’s all I need. That’s everything.”

Her eyes searched his, desperate, and found nothing but truth. Relief washed over her, tears falling freely now as he kissed them away, lips trailing down her cheeks, her jaw, the curve of her neck. She laughed through the tears, a soft, shaky sound.

The rest of the night was theirs alone — slow and tender, full of passion tempered by awe. They kissed until they couldn’t breathe, whispered secrets against each other’s skin, laughed when clumsy fingers tangled in fabric. Every touch was reverent, every breath shared, every heartbeat a promise renewed.

When they finally lay wrapped in each other’s arms, tangled in sheets and moonlight, Shepard pressed her face into his chest, smiling with a peace she hadn’t felt in years. “Different,” she murmured sleepily. “Tonight feels… different.”

Kaidan kissed her hair, holding her close. “It’s the first night of forever,” he said.

And as sleep pulled at them both, wrapped safe in each other, Shepard finally believed him.

For Shepard and Kaidan, the war was finally over. The rest of their story was just beginning.
