"Breathe, dearest," she cajoles, her hand rubbing in slow circles between his shoulder blades as the coughs wrack his frame. "Huff and cough, huff-and-cough to clear." Corvus knows, of course, but she finds the rhythm of the words pleasant. (Growing up, her own sickbed was attended by smiling Homeys. Never a human touch or the soothing words of family.) As the blanket she wrapped around him slides down his shoulders, she reaches up and tugs it back into place.

Pulling away long enough to pour him a glass of sweetened water from the nightstand, Shar barks out, "My husband's medicine! Quickly!" to the nearby coatrack. It scrambles off with a clatter of bronze legs across the floor and a 'Yes, ma'am! I'm the best at bringing medicine!' She grinds her teeth.

"It's all right, Corvus--" the ever-present formality is seeping out of her voice like the breath from his lungs as he tips the glass to his lips and takes slow, careful sips between coughs. "Easy does it."

If they came to her for help, she told them no (and potentially slapped one of them) and told them never to bring it up again/never tell anyone they said that. Then she manipulated things behind the scenes so they'd be able to leave, but everyone would have plausible deniability.]

who are we fooling? humanity craves the chatelaine. it is why we have big ass clunky rings with charms and keychains and tools.
