People of color continue to make up less than 25% of the U.S. publishing industry, while those who identify as disabled make up as little as 11%. A whopping 97% of all Publishing industry folx are cis women or men (Lee & Low Books 2023).
There is an obvious discrepancy affecting underrepresented communities, even with the efforts made to bridge the gap.
What issues do minorities in our industry still face? What is one thing we often overlook about individuals' contributions? Comment below as Iâd be happy to bring up specific questions in future MiP episodes.
Itâs important to support our libraries year-round including National Library Week
Last year, more books were banned than in any other recorded year: 4,240 titles, to be exact. Unsurprisingly, these bans mostly affect books written by or about people of color and those who identify as LGBTQIA+.
A country where the freedom to read about diverse backgrounds is taken away is not a country that cares for its citizens equally.
Letâs celebrate this National Library Week by making our voices heard. Check back soon on ways to take action regarding book banning and learning more about spaces helping public and school libraries.

Hannah Oliver Depp is a book superstar. Her mission has been to bring diverse books to more peopleâs shelves, and sheâs doing so by running Loyalty Books, a Black, Queer, and Asian-owned bookstore with locations in DC and Maryland.
Back in 2020, Hannah and I sat down and talked about what goes on behind the scenes of running a mission-based brick-and-mortar. We cover everything from paying rent and filling stores to keeping up with taxes and new laws, which oftentimes are designed to break new businesses rather than build them.

U.S. indie presses have been hit very hard by the recent and unexpected closing of SPD (Small Press Distribution). Purchasing straight from indies will help them significantly as they find a new distributor and try to regain stock lost to SPD. Indie author Michael J. Seidlinger made a list of new books in 2017 from indie presses that also lists many indie presses you can look into and support. (This list isn't comprehensive but it is a great start!)

Alice Wong, creator of Disability Visibility and editor of the upcoming anthology Disability Intimacy, reflects on her 50th birthday and how death has been an ever-present reality for much of her life.
"Birthdays have given me pause for reflection, especially this year. I recently looked at a picture taken from my 40th birthday party and could not recognize myself. I wasnât wearing a BiPap mask because at the time I only had to use it intermittently to support my breathing. I did not wear a belt across my chest which I need now because my upper body has grown weaker. I recalled being exhausted after the party. When I got home, I immediately put my mask on and turned on the ventilator. It was a sweet relief. Shortly after I started to use it for longer periods of time until I began using it all day and night. I didnât see it as a failure of my body but part of the inevitable downward slide toward my final destination."

When I can put a piece of a graphic memoir Iâm working on now â this little thing about my sonâs obsession with Michael Jackson and how it relates to everything from what happened in Ferguson to what happens in my marriage â and it goes viral within an hour.
