I believe Heated Rivalry really ruined excuses for the rest of the TV shows.

Oh, you need two years to release 8 episodes? HR filmed 6 episodes in less than 40 days.

You need more budget to pay high profile actors? HR took a risk with aspiring unknown actors because they were promising in the audition.

You butchered a language on screen? Connor Storrie delivered a monologue in Russian after learning the language for just a few weeks.

You added more dialogue to your adaptation to explain feelings? Hudson Williams delivered emotional rollercoaster performances with just his eyes.

HR is the standard now for book adaptations.

something i always found so ironic about those anti-piracy disney/marvel defenders is that they act like they’re paying for the streaming and the movie tickets and all that because they want to give the creators the revenue. but funnily enough Disney/Marvel/Star Wars movies and tv shows constantly steal from writers and artists of the source material (in marvel’s case, comics, in star wars case, novel writers) and don’t pay them a cent while using their concepts to make billions. so whose creative property are you really protecting by paying for Disney+?

Oh it’s so much worse than that. Ever since Disney has taken over Star Wars, there’s been an ever growing issue of them stealing fan art and passing it off as their own, in a way that seems to have spun out of a normal Marvel comics practice of just googling images and then tracing them.

Here’s one time a Fantastic Four comic took the design of fan made Stargate ship. I reached out to the artist and they had no idea this had even happened, much less got compensation.

I know these are a lot of videos, but I think they make the point that your money not only isn’t going to creators actually contracted to make official products, but it’s also not going to many fan artists who have their work stolen by Disney properties and have zero recourse cause how can a fan artist afford to take Disney to court? In spite of being a multi-billion dollar company, Disney refuses to pay their own writers and artists, much less those they steal from. Fucking pirate everything.

Watching OG Star Trek for the first time and having a blast whenever I get to a genuinely interesting story and moral dilemma and then getting slapped in the face with 60s sexism out of nowhere, and then immediately having it followed by the OG yaoi polycule sharing some giggles side by side at the end of the episode.

rewatching ep one and the relief in Shane's voice when he says really? after Ilya admits he's been with other men. god. GOD! Shane's world is so small. there aren't any out hockey players. he will have heard every slur in the book on the ice, enough to know in his heart that being gay is something you don't want to even think about being. and here's Ilya, admitting so freely to being with men. if Shane is broken, Ilya is broken too. and maybe their jagged edges fit.

Heated Rivalry is the ONLY show that has ever made the Miscommunication trope work for me because there's no bullshit, contrived "one character overhears something out of context and never clarifies" event, Shane and Ilya literally are communicating in vastly different styles while interpreting each other's actions through their own styles.

Of COURSE Ilya struggles to be direct and open with his words, he's been punished for it over and over and furthermore English is not his first language so he can't say what he wants to.

Of COURSE Shane struggles with indirect and implied subtext, he's autistic, and Ilya seems to change every single time they interact making him difficult to predict.

Neither of them are in the wrong for how they communicate, this is simply how they've learned to navigate the world, but you can still do a great amount of harm without intending to do so, as we see in the show, but the important thing is that they learn and grow together.

The Good Place Chapter 6: What We Owe to Each Other

The reason why the twist in season 1 of the Good Place works so well is because of the nature of sitcoms. In sitcoms, comedy is built off of the inconvenience of the characters. Characters are put in the most outrageous, uncomfortable situation to maximize humor. Of course a couples' counselor and private eye walk into Eleanor's house right when Chidi and Eleanor are at their lowest. Of course Eleanor is chosen by Michael to uncover the secret she's been trying to hide. We don't question if it's really the good place, because that's what sitcoms are supposed to do. By revealing that they are in the bad place, the writers are essentially breaking the 4th wall. It's a sitcom within a sitcom. All the clues were right in front of you the whole time.
