Teachers, what time does your (official) school day begin and end?

Our district is thinking about changing our start times so that elementary begins their day first, high school second, and middle schools at 9:15. Our current middle school day begins at 8:00 and ends at 3:00.

Are any of you familiar with later start times for secondary students? I know research supports it. Opinions?

I WOULD LOOOOOOVE a later start time. But it would mean a later day, which would interfere with sports AND WE CAN’T HAVE THAT.

As it is, we go 1.25 hours longer than the state requires, at 8-3:15 for grades 6-12, and it’s still barely feels like enough to get in degree requirements at 7 periods a day.

Our first bell rings at 7:55AM and the last one rings at 3:05, but most teachers arrive between 7:15-7:30AM and leave between 3:30-4:30PM.

Our school day begins at 7:30AM and ends at 2:20PM, technically, though teachers can’t leave until 2:30AM. We’re required to be here by 7:00PM.

The problem for us is that some of our buses take 2-3 hours to get around, which means students are up at like 4:30AM to catch a bus. : T

I flinch at some of the things my students say. Not because they speak in a Southern Dialect, but because it's so problematic. The other day, a student told me that "[America] makes [Japanese] food better than [the Japanese] do!"

What. What?

Petition for the creation of high school/secondary teacher supply stores so that everything does NOT have A GOSHDAMN SMILEY FACE ON IT

Officially survived my first three days as a first year teacher. Not a huge accomplishment, but I'm pretty pleased.

This whole weekend is basically being spent drafting up a curriculum, though, because there isn't any sort of guideline in place for me to follow. On the plus side, I don't have to do SLOs because we're using Pro-Core? On the down side, I have no idea what Pro-Core will mean for the upcoming year. Also, none of my tech accounts work (no access to a grade book, no e-mail, nada).

I'm also frustrated that my school placed students with severe disabilities into my classroom. Mainstreaming just...it doesn't work in some cases, and this is one of them. I'm not trained to deal with this, and, though I do have two intervention specialists in my classroom for that class, it doesn't help much. I've already been told by another intervention specialist who works with the same kids that "they won't get anything out of regular classes" and "they're basically allowed to do as they please." That's incredibly distracting to an already rowdy bunch of students.

Uggghh.

Well. Let's look at all the adult stuff I did today:

Set up savings and checking accounts at a new, more local bank

Requested a replacement SS card

Got my P.O box because this town doesn't have mail boxes

Finished cleaning up my room, save taking out the trash, cleaning the floors, and having the textbooks removed

I officially have my first report-early-and-be-official day on Monday for some sort of back-to-school meeting, then a new-teacher orientation. I don't know why I'm not more nervous yet, but you know what? I'll take it.

AHHH.

I got a job! Well, I've known about this for a while, actually, and I've already gone through the hectic issue of moving. But now comes the hectic issue of SCHOOL STARTS IN LESS THAN A WEEK AND I HAVEN'T EVEN SIGNED MY CONTRACT.

I have it, but I just got it today. My principal was out of town until the 4th and I had virtually no guidance on what to do. Now I need to get that all signed and figured out and then take care of my classroom and I don't even know my curriculum?

On the plus side, everyone in the school seems nice so far, and I met the Spanish teacher today and she's just wonderful.
