okay but i'm now imagining the aftermath of the fall with this whole premise...
they only have their hero/villain identities, not civilian ones and where mecha man is being treated is a secret hidden behind so many NDA's (as is standard for big name heroes). so he has... zero idea where the guy is, or his status.
anyways um... i'm just. rambling for 5 million years so the rest is under the cut.
but heroes seeing flambae after and offering their condolences, and their hopes he pulls through. flambae is so confused the first few times it happens --- he doesn't get a word in about it those times, for various reasons. until finally someone does it again (it's the 9th time in 2 days) and he's like wtf why are y'all telling me this!? i don't care! we're not friendly! but it still continues.
he says, like he isn't actively losing sleep over it for the first month. even with the news that he is stable but in a coma, he can't help but be stressed. it only gets marginally better over the next few months, not because mecha dick's status changes; but more him trying not to lose himself to the worry. it reaches the point where, for a while, no news is good news.
flambae obviously catches the press conference; not because he cares, but you know. that is his nemesis. he needs to stay up to date! that's all. he can't help but grin a little stupidly as he watches mecha dick crash out at the press conference. because fuck that fucking reporter! how dare he say such a thing!
and yes even tho he joined SDN and is a hero now - technically - they are still rivals damnit. and no mecha dick had zero influence on his decision to join SDN; he just. needed a job and it's not like people wanna hire ex-convicts. at least not people who pay well and give him insurance.
he is sad, though, learning about him not not retiring. well, two years for their rivalry was a good run; and if mecha dick ever gets the mech back up and running, he will happily go back to being his nemesis. coop and punch up invite him out for drinks, and it distracts him.
then he sees mecha man in the flesh at the bar. and he's with... blonde blazer. his boss. and it's only because of that, that he hangs back. but the second she is gone, he slides up to the bar.
"hey, mecha dick!"
"just so you know, i turned because you were yelling, not because i'm a dick."
"are you sure about that?"
and he laughs, his shoulders too thin now; flambae can tell even from under the jacket. and he hates it.
"touché."
"so, what just giving up on hero work, huh?"
"yeah," there is a beat, barely noticeable before he turns on his usual bantering charm. but flambae still catches it. "sorry you'll have to find another hero to bust your shitty villain-ass up for the time being," he says dryly.
"excuse you, this is a hero bar, mecha bitch. and i'm here, i'm a hero now, bitch. unlike your tired and retired ass."
"are you now?" there is the usual tone he has, with their banter, with a hint of genuine curiosity.
he eventually leaves, when blazer comes back. but not before confusing her with mentions from flambae of mecha man being his nemesis. but whatever, she wouldn't understand.
the next day at work, they come back from lunch and they're introduced to their new dispatcher. and flambae knows mecha bitch's voice too damn well, and the fact he was hanging with blazer the night before--- yeah. his new dispatcher, his new direct boss? it's his nemesis.
and somehow, the worst part of all of this, is that the guys name is fucking robert robertson.
So. Obviously, Flambae cannot keep a secret to save his life.
And judging by the subtle but intense looks Robert’s been giving him, this is a fact known to both of them.
So naturally, he’s gonna avoid the guy as much as possible. And Prism asks him why, because their former dispatchers did make him angry, helpless, but never nervous.
He panics. “I’m in love with him. Bye.”
The only problem is, Robert still has the keys to his place.
He figured they’d be a good idea if Mecha Man ever needed a hiding place.
Like now, apparently.
“Before anything else: No, you cannot tell Prism.”
Flambae nervously darts his eyes everywhere but at him. “Okay. Yeah. Sure. No problemo.”
Silence.
“I want to tell Prism.”
“Noo, no no no—hey. Flambae. Look at me. Eye contact.”
“That’s not FAIR, your eyes make me do weird shit!” He yelps. “I don’t like not telling her stuff! She’s still mad at me for not telling her about me being pranked by that inventor’s gala thing! Like I’d trust what a tree says.”
“First of all; That’s not a prank, I’ve been telling you to go for months.”
“That’s a nerd award! Only nerds get those!”
“You broke the laws of physics for fun. I don’t think it gets nerdier than that.”
“THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME!”
“Bottom line is. I will tell them. In time. Until then; you’re gonna keep it a secret. Help your nemesis out?”
“…Fucking— fine! Fine.“
And maybe he is staring, a little.
This is the first time he’s ever seen him out of the costume, even after patching it a hundred times.
And Robert huffs, expecting it. “Were you expecting me to be taller?”
“No. You’re the same size. Kind of.” He scratches at the back of his neck. Maybe if he keeps his eyes averted, the wonder won’t show. “…I got my ass kicked by a cute guy with freckles. Of course im not telling anyone.”
And Robert doesn’t move for a moment, until a brief chuckle leaves him, and a softness he rarely allows fills his bones. “Yeah. Better not.”
