Maybe I'm reading too much into this scene and they really only wanted shirtless boys for the boy loving crowd, but as I am a 34 yo woman and this are highschoolers I looked past that.

We have a MD trained boy in a CK gi and a CK trained boy in a MD gi and they have their current dojo's symbols displayed in their back.

Hawk had been fighting under his real name Eli (when back in the first season he went as Hawk on the board). With the mohawk gone, the confidence taking a hit and the tattoo covered there was no sign of Hawk anywhere.

But this shedding of their outer layers, the emergence of the Hawk, that fact that he won not with a Miyagi Do symbol on his back but with the Hawk on display.

This was not a Miyagi Do win this was a Hawk win.
