hello! this is @toothwalker's character and sketch blog.
my characters are slooooowly being filled in on toyhou.se so go there to find out more about them, otherwise check their tag on @toothwalker.
as a last resort (or a first one!) you can send me an ask! I always love to talk about my characters and worlds!!
one last thing, please don't be hurt if I take ages getting back to you, I am chronically ill. if I really don't seem to be replying to an ask, like after a week, I probably didn't get it and you should send it again!
colour composition tests for a picture I've been trying to work on since the beginning of december - but life keeps getting in the way! the picture is supposed to represent a feeling of respite
1. Osian's love for bright colours and fun styling is most obvious in his fashion choices, but in fact even influences him in choosing farm equipment (don't tell Alun!)
2. Osian and Myfanwy sometimes play with her toys and playsets, which Osian does by making up scandalous hidden lives for the little flocked animal people.
3. He raised Wooly Baa Baa from a sickly little lamb on a bottle!
4. His mole-rat-kin jester player character in Morgan's Sea of Salt TTRPG setting is called Aksel Grease, despite Morgan's best efforts. Some people cannot be helped.
5. He can sing decently but not as well as he could as a child, when he had a very clear and beautiful voice. This helped him bond with Morgan (and by extension Myfanwy) as teachers always wanted them to perform together.
6. Osian's favourite cartoon is intended for eight-year-old girls, and is about a group of playful seahorses and the reef they inhabit. It's mostly an excuse to sell merchandise…
7. He had always had a desire to move to somewhere more urban and modern, despite knowing in another part of his mind that he would have to inherit the farm. Only relatively recently did these ideas actually collide in his head!
8. Osian and Bron used to fight a lot more when Bron was younger and living as a boy. Bron misses this a little, because she feels he took her more seriously then, but Osian is ashamed of his old habits.
9. He loves doing annoying voices, which drives Morgan up the wall.
10. Osian enjoys the folktales of Prince Gareth, the son of the sea goddess Glasmyr and a mortal king. He is a chivalrous hero (at least in the romantic version Osian knows), and Osian always insisted on playing him in games of Pretend as a child.
my therapist and my aunt have teamed up to get me to try abstract art (my arch-nemesis). the first attempts were...not great but I quite like these. I'm going to be very brave and post an earlier one under the cut anyway though because of the wizard code of showing your working
Myfanwy is bored. She looks at the sea outside, hoping to see the port, even though she knows it won't appear for at least two more hours. The sea is calm at least. Morgan keeps humming the same phrase of music over and over, with slight variations - he's obviously composing a song. Myfanwy can smell something that's making her stomach clench and her mouth water. Apple and pastry. She already ate lunch on the shore though, so she can't get anything now. There aren't even any visible boats outside, it's just flat slate blue. Where is Osian? He went off to the toilet a while ago. Myfanwy is just deciding to get up and look for him when he appears, from the opposite direction than she was expecting. He's clutching a packet that the delicious smell is coming from and he's never looked more handsome.
“Here you go Myf, apple turnover! Got one for you too Morgan…Morgan!”
Morgan reaches a hand out vaguely and Osian stuffs a pastry into it. The packet’s gone transparent where the grease has got on it, making the illustration look a little like a stained glass window. If you're really hungry, at least.
Myfanwy bites into her own pastry. Hot sweet apple-y mash fills her mouth, burning her tongue a little. Perfection!
After finishing the pastries, it seemed a bit of a pity to use hand sanitiser to get rid of the scent on her hands, but she didn't want to stain the fabric she was planning to sew. It was going to be a sundress, in her favourite colour, lilac. The material was vintage, soft and thin with use, with large printed flowers on it. It had originally been a duvet cover, but it was going to get a new lease of life as an outfit for Myfanwy.
She managed to get both the collar and sleeves on before the complaints of her cramped legs reached a level annoying enough to bother her. She looked at the other two - Morgan was gazing, dreamy-eyed, out of the window, obviously in a world of his own, and Osian was playing a block stacking game on his ancient phone. As she watched, the screen wiped out and the GAME OVER text bounced up cheerily in the middle.
“Bugger! I nearly hit level 51. God, my legs are killing me, do you want to go for a walk?”
As always when she is yearning for something, Myfanwy is grateful for Osian's talent for incisive action. The boat is crammed with people, mostly other students and business people, and they have to push to get through. She lets Osian go first, dividing the sea of people like the prow of a boat carving the waves in two. It's only when there's finally room to walk together again that she realises they've ended up at the café.
“I'll just see if they're still serving…”
Myfanwy means to stop him, she really does, but then actually - she doesn't. The second turnover isn't quite as amazing tasting as the first, but because she's not consumed by hungry passion, she gets to savour the flavours more scientifically. The way the slight sourness of the cooking apple cuts through the rich pastry is heavenly. It really is a perfect food.
The two head up the stairs to the deck. It's very cold and windy, so they have to shout to hear each other, and the pastry doesn't hang about to keep her hands warm for long. They argue (pointlessly and without conviction) about whether a boat they can see on the horizon is a fishing vessel or another passenger ferry. An older man standing near them at the handrail gives them a dirty look. Oops. Maybe it's time to head in again.
On the way past the café she makes sure they stop and get a turnover for Morgan, who must be hungry again by now. She makes up for this act of filial loyalty by absent-mindedly biting into it the moment it's in her hands. Osian firmly takes it away from her and transports it to Morgan, with Myfanwy trailing after him.
To Osian: How do you feel about inheriting the sheep farm?
Well, I've always known it was going to happen, y'know? Because I'm the oldest, but mostly because Bron‘s not the type to run a farm. She’s too cunning for that! So I always knew it would come. Didn't realise it would happen so soon though… not going to lie to you, seeing Myf and Morgan leave for uni was… but it's not like my dad wanted to have a heart attack, y’know? It's just how things are. And I do love the sheep, the little bastards.
To myfanwy: what’s the coolest book you ever read?
The coolest book I ever read…well, I have to admit I'm not a very good reader, haha, I'm a bit slow so I don’t get through books the way someone like Rhiannon does… but the coolest book I ever read that I can think of right now was a book my history teacher lent me actually (don't walk away yet, haha!) It was about this patchwork quilt made of twelve different fabrics, and each fabric had a little chapter of story set in the period of history it came from, like a little snapshot, about the same family…and then there was a much longer chapter explaining the history of lots of things that were mentioned in the story! I learned so much about the fabrics I work with when I do my sewing projects and the way silk is produced and like the invention of nylon and stuff…and it barely even felt like learning history! I loved it.
Question for Myfanwy - do you have any particular hobbies you really enjoy? Or is there anything you like the idea of getting into, but haven't really had the chance to?
Oh! I have quite a few hobbies actually, I like to keep busy I guess, but the one I’ve been thinking about lately is um, a little embarrassing… I actually love these little, um, little dolls…they’re for kids really but they’re sooo sweet! I have quite a big collection and I like to set up, um, little scenes… there’s big plastic houses and things in the playsets. One thing I want to work on but is really difficult is making more little clothes for them! My fingers aren’t as clever as I’d like unfortunately, haha. Anyway, here’s Bachgen Banana and his new cloak!
