Territorio de Zaguates “Land of the Strays” is quite possibly the most magical place in the entire world, at least if you’re a dog lover like myself. It is a no-kill shelter home for over 900 stray and abandoned dogs in Costa Rica. Imagine taking 900 dogs on a walk… Well, Territorio de Zaguates allows and even encourages visitors to come on these spectacular hikes around the countryside. The shelter said that people are often reluctant to adopt mixed breed dogs because they’re seen as “less valuable” than pure breeds. To help fight this stereotype, the shelter has began a campaign to give ever mixed breed dog their own unique breed name, such as “Chubby-Tailed German Dobenauzer.”

A German Shepherd called Micah, relaxing after spending 20 hours searching for survivors among the wreckage of the World Trade Center.
I remember reading that so many of the search dogs (over 400 were brought in from around the country) were becoming stressed and then depressed because they were only finding bodies and not survivors. Vets and handlers asked that volunteers began hiding in the debris so that the dogs could find a live person and give them assurance they were doing a good job.
