Breakfast cereal throwback!
today i was in a preschool room during lunchtime, and the educator who was serving lunch said to one boy, “oh, you wanna try the couscous and the chicken? you wanna be strong like daddy?’ and this kid, this fucking kid, said, “i wanna be strong like mommy. mommy’s so strong.”
you tell her, kid. you tell her.

I love trains
A few of my preschoolers have seen The Greatest Showman by now, and they were talking about it at snack time on Friday. One of the boys, in particular, was trying to wrap his head around parts of it. “My mom said that a really long time ago, people with white skin were really mean to people who were different.”
I told him that was true.
Then he leaned in really close and hissed, all shifty-eyed, as if he expected an angry racist to jump out from behind the dollhouse or something. “But I know some people still are mean about it…”
I told him that, sadly, he was right.
“Well, that’s old and dumb,” he declared with a huff, flopping back into his chair. “–And I don’t even care if dumb isn’t a kind word!”
I look forward to reading it.

“A child who has become master of his acts through long and repeated exercises, and who has been encouraged by the pleasant and interesting activities in which he has been engaged, is a child filled with health and joy and remarkable for his calmness and discipline.”

Rant time!
I work at a preschool and there are two kids in my class lets call them…Anna and Ryan. They are neighbors, Anna is 4 and Ryan is 3. Ryan found out Anna had a sleep over with another girl in class and asked if he could have a sleep over with her. When Ryan and Anna’s moms were dropping them off at class today I overheard this:
Annas mom: Did you hear what Ryan asked Anna?
Ryans mom: No?
Annas mom laughing: Ryan asked if he could have a sleep over with Anna
Ryans mom laughing: oh?
Annas mom: oh yes, and Annas dad was not happy about that!
Both women laughing
Annas mom: But he said they could ride bikes together outside, any outdoor activity.
Ryans mom: so many of his friends are girls and he never understands why he cant play dolls or go to sleep overs with them
Both women laughing
Me and the queer front desk girl eyeing each other with disbelief.
WHY, just…why? Why are these grown adults sexualizing actual toddlers? What do they assume will happen???? Do they know thier toddlers dont have sexual urges?—just phsyical curiosity if ANYTHING. Jesus. Your kids will eventually have enough of thier own issues stop imposing your baggage on them
Every morning at the Lone Tree Elementary in Lone Tree, Iowa, pupils line-up and then choose a greeting from a chart a hug, handshake, or a fist bump.
Next the classes’ nominated morning greeter will give them the greeting they desire.

Now that’s a lovely way to encourage friendship and community while allowing everyone to set their personal boundaries. Man, it’s always good to be reminded of how many people are actually amazing - how they care about others and just try to leave the world a bit better than they found it.
Turns out I actually love my job. The kids are so cute and it’s so fun. The kids ask me all sorts of questions about my clothes and my hair and my piercings and my makeup. It’s precious and I adore their curiosity. I love getting to teach them that it’s okay to be different
