Can you name the Song?
This is the type of thing that makes you proud to be in advertising.
Very proud of the sponsors and partners.

Nothing better on a Thursday then a campaign that just makes sense. Simple, to the point and makes you want to keep your hair.
The weakest one is the Charlie Sheen one, no real build up.
Strongest is still the first, very linear in thinking and easy to follow, plus great casting for the wrongfully convicted.
High five direct TV.

Jung Von Matt’s German agency recently released a minimalistic ad campaign for LEGO. The series features a lot of our favorite iconic cartoon characters from South Park to The Simpsons.
1. The Simpsons; 2. Ninja Turtles; 3. South Park; 4. Asterix and Obelix
I've never heard of #4 but the rest are quite bang on.
Wish they would have done Futurama. Leela would have been fun to see.
Something to get your motor going
Here's a brief selection of videos to get a different side of researching (vs. just reading about advertising)
This one is great at giving specifics for an interview and what they look for. I like the idea that everything is based on your presentation. You are the product. Sounds very basic but, sometimes gets forgotten in the shuffle. Ignore the interchanging between marketing and advertising, I did.

The CEO makes this very insightful. He says persevere, which is a more elegant way of saying never give up.

Here's another goal achieving word: tenacity

Leaving you with the Donald, sums up weather or not you should be in advertising or anything for that matter.
Living the single life - things to kill it as a single-lite before you get married to your job
Why yes! it is a suspended bedroom. Read more here.
No kids, no house, no relationship?
Awesome! Use that to your advantage and live it up. Because, whether we admit it or not, employers love to hear those no's. You'll soon be married to your job in advertising and your time will become this ever elusive thing that after a while you're sure is just imaginary and made up like Carmen San Diego or fish tacos.
On to the goods:
*note- this is for people who are single and live on their own, sans roommates. Also, I'm assuming you live in a small apt. like me and can see your whole apt. when you sit up in bed.
Double time- use things for more than one purpose, saves time, money, and space:
1. Use one towel as your bath and hand towel, only you are using it, so should be safe for both purposes, saves on laundry!
2. One stick- find a broom that can unscrew and the handle (stick) can be used for your swiffer head and mop head
3. Extra cupboards in the kitchen? I made mine into book shelves.
4. Tiny closet - leave your suitcase open and use it as extra storage at the bottom of your closet
5. Kitty litter - kitty litter boxes are perfect size for garbage cans and they have lids and handles
6. Cookie cooling racks are perfect for laptop airing and resting.
7. Don't buy tupperware - just wait till you're finished with your margarine or cream cheese tub, wash and use
8. Baking soda- If the baking soda in your fridge has out lived your fridge, mix it with warm water, white vinegar and dish soap (optional) to create a multipurpose cleaner. *Be mindful, baking soda is a mild abrasive
..............
Look up, it's extra vertical real estate.
1. Doors
- use over the door hangers or racks to extend your closet
- too lazy to get a door rack? use the top corner of the door to hang jackets
2. Handles- use your door handles to hang purses, bras, jewelry, anything you want!
3. Kitchen - hang up pots, utensils and knives in your kitchen for extra space and a decorative touch. Plus magnetic knife holders are supposed to be best for your over priced Ginsus.
..............
Line of sight - minimalist look
1. Put your dish soap and sponge dish in the sink when not in use, makes for a cleaner look. I wouldn't advise putting them in a cupboard for fear of being too lazy to retrieve them and never doing dishes again.
2. If you have a deep window sill, put your microwave there, save counter space.
3. Don't go crazy with condiments and spices - try not buying any condiments or spices unless you have over 3 uses for it, you'd be surprised how little you actually use/need
4. If frames are too expensive and annoying to hang and you've out grown tape and sticky tack, trying using plain silver tacks. Works great for posters and random maps that you find.
5. I have no cupboard doors, so I minimalized all of my bowls and plates to 2-4 each. Looks better and forces me to wash dishes on the regular.
..............
Moving on the cheap'n easy- If you're a nomad you might already know these.
1. Craigslist free section- check, you never know *Fabric-ed furniture is not advisable (bedbugs)
2. Take a walk *use your at your own discretion
- go to the posher neighborhoods around spring-time garbage days, you'll find things that are quite good
-make the rounds at dorms or student housing round April/May and Dec./Jan. Students are moving out and leave behind a lot
3.Boxes
- try your local grocery store for banana boxes, they have a huge ass hole in them but keep the paper that comes in them, it'll keep your stuff in, they're amazingly strong, have handles and are FREE
-Starbucks have weekly shipments of coffee and such called Seattle. Find out when they are and just ask the baristas not to break them down and save them for you. They're perfect size, easy to make handles in, very stackable, oh and also FREE.
..............
Food - Most food isn't packaged for singles, so be creative
1. Shop with an idea
- buy ingredients based on dishes that you will make. This will make your buying focused and allow you to use everything you buy. If you buy too much, find other dishes you can make with the excess and repeat the focused buying.
- buy what you want. Buy 1 or 2 things you're craving. Once you get that out of your system you can continue your focused buying. You can't lie to yourself or reason yourself out of it. It's called a craving for that reason. Get it and move on.
- can't finish your bread? Freeze it.
- try not to buy in bulk. Unless, it has a super long shelf life and you know you're going to keep eating it. If not you'll end up wasting more than you save. You're single, buy small, enjoy fresh.
2. Keep your fridge as empty and organized as possible. This will allow you to see exactly what you have and have to eat. *It makes also me feel skinnier, is that odd?
..............
More on being a single-lite here.
What this guy from JWT -David Eastman, the North American CEO JWT- said about advertising to singles. It's long ass article, so just ctrl+f JWT. Not that ground breaking, just interesting based on the map of the U.S. and the stats on singles.
So, what's the point of all this scrimping and saving?! Use your money for what you love now cuz when you do have those big three what you want will be fourth :(
Ikea/Stupid/Research
Came across this on twitter today via @leoburnett. And yes, I am now starting to see the inherent value of twitter, although the annoyance factor it projects can be a bit much.
The campaign focuses on 'moving day' and basically gives away free Ikea moving boxes. Notice the one that says 'movin' on up?' Irony if taken and used by the homeless. Not sure what kind of message that would send. Maybe just confusion, but I digress!
Upon looking at related links down at the bottom of the page, I came across this.
My fave and the strongest of the three posted:
....
.....
Which brings me to the old adage of "people are stupid" vs. the just-as-old adage "people aren't stupid", mostly heard when talking about weak brand promises and the like.
In either case I say, stupid sells. Well, stupid/funny sells. Likened to your average internet meme where 'you're doing it wrong' is the best part of doing it.
*It's not trying too hard.
Lastly, I can add theinspirationroom.com to my list of links for part 2 of my getting-into advertising-plan;research (also known as me wasting time online).
All and all, a good start to today.
Go do something!
I once read somewhere that having a portfolio to your name wasn't enough. Turns out the more you create, in general, the more creative they assume you to be. Even if your portfolio is off the charts I'm guessing they want somebody who can cross mediums and live outside the advertising box. Although, it is a very nice box, I agree with this line of thinking. This is the main reason why I started the blog, along with the fact that it was a self governing/motivating animal that could help me get a job.
Now actually doing anything besides the ads, which are a lot of work in itself, is another matter. But to get me started in doing something else, here's my inspiration:
*Doesn't have to be perfect or groundbreaking, just has to be right.
..............
..............
Getting Started
Here's my three part plan for getting into advertising (art director):
1. Portfolio
2. Apply (research/contacts)
3. The Looks (the lifestyle/dress)
Things I'll need to do to accomplish this:
1. Focus/Remove all distractions
2. Manage myself better (time/patience)
3. Ignore everybody else (don't compare)
4. Knowing that I WILL get into advertising (true believer)
5. Inspiration/motivation (like this or this, and produce things I approve of)
Any plan worth doing should be single minded and specific. Personally anything more than 3 parts and I lose focus. Why multitask, when I can single task to get things done quicker and better? Single = Win
Ending on a happy note:
