Upon A Child That Died

Made this piece for a gallery on trans art but never ended up submitting it. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but in 2018, my best friend at age eleven died as a result of homophobic violence. With no remains, memorial, or gravesite in rural Oklahoma, I do what I can to keep their memory alive. Here’s one attempt at that

so like im incredibly employed. i’m writing this from a hotel room because i was invited & flown out to present my research somewhere, and i’m heading to my next hotel for my next professional development thing tomorrow. and i turn 19 in two weeks, my birthday during fly-out research thing #2, and cguqqie will NEVER be 19 🗣️!!

i’ve been puzzling over this, quite anxiously, for hours. i decided to art spew it out
(i have no clue how bad the formatting is…maybe just scroll througthe gallery 😭)
update, i move into my dorm (a converted quadruple all to myself for the price of half a double, #disabledperks) tomorrow. i’m about as close to vancouver as you can get and in a city labeled a trans safe haven, and i’m being paid a lot of dollars this semester to attend because i earned so many scholarships (applying was a part time job for 2 years). i submitted 4 research abstracts to an international conference yesterday while driving through montana.
i’m really fortunate — not lucky, i’ve worked so hard it’s beyond what i can express so my success isn’t a fluke — but fortunate that no external circumstances prevented me from achieving this. i’m working to create equity for the communities i grew up in in the way i am best at, and hope i will make the rural south safer for at least one child. i hope that will be enough.
