People often ask me about accessibility stuff when it comes to walkable cities so I’m gonna highlight some stuff I find to be cool

Raised intersections! These are intersections where the road gently rises to the level of the sidewalk, acting as slight speed bumps for cars and eliminating the need for going up and down ramps with mobility aids or carts

Level train platforms and user operated bus ramps! Ramps operated by external buttons and level platforms make it so that wheelchair and walker users don’t need to speak to a driver to access transit

Moped cars/micro cars! Miniature cars often used by people who can’t use bikes. Many of them are so small that they fit in bike lanes

Frequent bench placement! A walkable street is one with places to rest.

Air conditioned bus stops! In places where it often gets super hot frequent bus stop placement combined with air conditioning can make transit safer and more accessible to more people

Cargo bikes! Who needs a car when you can haul your stuff and/or dogs around in a bike?

I bet those raised intersections also mean you don't have to walk or roll through puddles. I've had to go around so many large puddles that like to gather right at the curb cut because it's the lowest point

which is annoying if you're on foot and able to step up on the curb a few feet away

much worse if you actually needed that curb cut

for those unaware today india experienced one of its biggest protests in half a decade. there were protests all over the nation for various causes but the major one was in delhi. all we asked for was the resignation of the education minister because he's failed the students of this nation time & time again. but we were met with brutality, the police had barricaded the main site of protest (jantar mantar). metro stations were shutdown, the public was restrained from reaching the protest site and all the adjoining areas had signal jammers to make sure the crowd had no access to constant updates. they had us blocked from all the sides. they were lathi (baton) charging students from one side & releasing tear gas from the other. you couldn't walk 100 m on streets without having a tear gas shell thrown at you. there were many students, women & kids bleeding — some from their head. some couldn't walk anymore. the police had removed their nameplates & acted with full impunity to resort to unprecedented levels of violence. they were pelting stones at us, beating up people for no reason, forcefully detaining them and attacking us constantly with tear gas & rubber bullets. they wouldn't let you exit either. the crowd was peaceful & looking out for each other yet they were met with violence. i made a friend who was all alone & she asked to join me & my friend because a policeman wouldn't leave her alone. he constantly prodded her for personal info, invited her back to the jeep saying they have food there, wouldn't stop following her around. you couldn't call or ask anyone for help, we were left to fend for ourselves & be on a constant lookout if you did not want to be beaten up to death by police. all for what? asking a resignation? shame on this country.

So I went on a double date last night with a friend and his boyfriend. We were catching up waiting for my girlfriend to arrive and he said that there was a piece I’d made that he couldn’t find in my shop.

I was curious and said, “Oh, I don’t post everything I guess, which one was it?”

He started scrolling through his phone and said he wanted it to go with my fire hydrant. You might remember this little number I painted:

He bought it as a wood canvas print and loves it. I was so curious what I made that he wanted to go along with that painting.

Finally he says triumphantly, “this one!”

I started laughing hysterically. I said, “You want my little pool floaty??? I made that in 15 minutes while the professor went over the syllabus!”

And he looked down at his phone with love and said, “I just think it’s so cool. I know that ones painted and one is 3D but they just go together. It reminds me of fortnite. I don’t play fortnite but it reminds me of it.”

So I promised him I’d list the pool floaty in my shop. I didn’t know who’d buy a fire hydrant either and I was wrong about that.
