I'm trying to come up with an interesting subtitle for this intro post but I can't and so I was going to write something like "do people actually put effort into this stuff?" but I'm on a really profound journey of healing from the effects of being raised in a post-irony culture that seems to value not caring about anything and being "nonchalant" all the goddamn time when in fact you SHOULD be caring about everything, so I don't wanna just leave it at that, and now I'm knowingly putting this entire exposition dump here as a counter to that to seem suuuper relatable and genuine despite all of us subconsciously knowing that we are in a Not Real Space and Everything Is Curated. So.

Basic Info

My name is Iris. Or, well, that's the one I use in a lot of online spaces because I'm a bit neurotic about divulging actual personal details. I'm in my mid-20s (god that feels weird to say), and I'm a trans woman (who will be very loud about that when it's relevant <3). I'm also a leftist, and that will likely bleed into some things I post on here.

I run two Elder Scrolls rp sideblogs: @ark-ay and @florentius-baenius

I'm an artist. Currently I'm trying to drill the fundamentals into my brain and not doing much more than occasional doodles, but maybe one day I'll open commissions.

I also very occasionally do writing, and a lot of worldbuilding in my head. Currently I am in the trenches of creating a post-Skyrim fanfic with a friend, a large part of which involves me taking a single scrap of lore I saw and turning it into the focal point of my main character.

You ever mention one of your favourite things to someone, and then remember that you only discovered that thing from someone else who loved it before? And then you realise that so much of who you are is made up of little pieces other people have given to you from themselves? And then you realise that you've probably given a little piece of yourself to others too? And then you're quietly grateful that you live in a world where people give little pieces of themselves to eachother?

random thing but i feel like there are a lot of people that misunderstand what it means to be in a public space.

in a public space, as the price you pay for living on a planet with other people, you are expected to conduct yourself in a certain way out of consideration for those other people.

what that generally means is:

- don't blast loud audio from your phone

- if you smoke or vape, either do so in a place people can reasonably avoid or ask the people you are around if it's okay to smoke around them

- do not stare at people for no good reason.

- in enclosed spaces such as buses and trains, avoid eating food with strong smells

- if someone tells you that something you are doing is making them or others uncomfortable, and it is something you can reasonably stop doing, just stop doing it

i promise you, you will be fine if you have to wait a little while to light up a ciggy or doomscroll. you exist on a planet with other people.

Does anyone have any resources for drawing bodies? I'm having a little trouble figuring out how torsos work mainly. (i'm sure i could figure out passable arms and legs in an afternoon)

Are you going for dynamic poses, or just bodies in general?

Reference images are great for starting out if you know how to box out general shapes. If not, I could search for some better tutorials or try to explain it myself. If you want. (I'm not an expert by any means, I just feel like I've got a pretty good grasp on it).

I also find that the weird oval doesn't help, I make segmented boxes to demonstrate the shape then add a line for where the ribs should be.

And here is a body sketch of mine. The torso is basically a rectangle that I put into a perspective that all the limbs are attached to.

I also have a few photos from a drawing anatomy book that I can share if you'd like. I could also make a better drawing to explain it, this is just something I've been working on recently.

Bodies in general, mostly! For dynamic poses I know I'm going to have to get my head around gesture drawing, which is what I figure my next step will be once I have a passable ability to just Draw Bodily Forms.

I'd absolutely love tutorial links and personal explanations if you have the time! You seem to have a good grasp on it yourself from that example sketch!

To be as specific as possible, one of my biggest gripes is armpits LMAO. I can't figure out how to draw the overlaps between arms and torso without it looking kinda stupid. When it comes to bodies with breasts, it's also a little difficult for me to figure out just how far down they go/once again, how to handle them overlapping arms in certain positions.

I think a fair few of my issues could come down to perspective, which is why I've been doing ye olde "draw a bunch of boxes" exercise.

Okay, so, quick and messy explanation of how I usually draw bodies!

It’s a bit long so I put it under the cut.

Step one: general shape.

I like to start with the head followed by the neck so I’m not reaching the top of the page while drawing, but you can do whatever order feels more comfortable. Then, I make the first two boxes for the torso. Make the top in perspective so you can see where the shoulders are.

I usually try to “bend” my boxes to match the general body shape I’m going for (as seen on right). This makes it easier to work with and add details.

After the boxes come the legs, I just draw ellipses to give me the shape I want.

I don’t usually draw bones outright but it’s good to keep in mind that they’re what give the body shape. Anywhere you see them stick out, the skin is going to follow.

Then, after adding more definition to the body, I draw the arms in whichever position they need to be.

Also added circles for the general locations of where the breasts start. From here you decide the arm overlap. If the arm is meant to be closer the to viewer than the body the overlap will show more of it. Like this:

The armpit stays under the edge of the box you created.

For the breast, you use the previously drawn circles as the starting point. Remember that they will be affected by gravity and will place slightly lower than the starting point. Generally, the top of the start should be right at armpit level.

They’re not perfect circles and typically have more mass at the bottom and sides unless affected by arm movement or something else.

I'm taking pencil sketch requests!

I've decided that my traditional art skills are finally up to par to start drawing things for other people! I'm not quite ready to charge people yet, as I'm still working on establishing a strong workflow without the pressure of having been paid.

The Bare Basics: You send me reference(s), and when I have the time and energy I'll put my pencils to work. You can do this in my ask box (I think that allows images) or you can message me.

What I can do: I'm most proficient in character headshots, but because this is something I'm doing for skills development I'm more than happy to attempt half bodies or even full bodies, though the level of detail I can pack in will naturally be lower until I flex those muscles some more.

Simple (but important) Disclaimer: This scheme is for my own development as an artist. I do not promise consistent quality, nor do I even promise that your request will actually be fulfilled. I understand it can be disheartening to put a request in and hear nothing, I really do. Equally, I want you to understand that you are not paying me, nor will I take payment in exchange for a guarantee. There may also come a time when I do open commissions, and past that point I will not be doing any free work (exceptions apply: flights of fancy, art trades, etc.)

You will not receive any timeframe for completion, though if I don't finish a sketch in one sitting I may send you a WIP.
