It was like the rain you saw on the set of a movie, except this was no movie. This was some sort of distorted fever dream that left Ines completely shocked. Or at least it was about to be. For the time being, all Ines saw was a devastating rainstorm that seemed to hit more like sleet, harsh and and unrelenting. She hadn’t noticed any changes in her physical appearance, because, who would, when their only priority was to get out of the rain?

“I’m not sure, it just started raining!” Ines called back to Eden. It was strange that Eden was even talking to them — it had been over thirty years since they last saw one another, and the last time Eden did see Ines, it was probably under compromising circumstances. Ines and Jamie were the hot summer couple once upon a time, but circumstances changed.

Eden watched Ines speak but could barely listen, focused only on the fact that Ines appeared thirty years younger. Completely unaware that she too looked like she was in her 20s again, she stood with her arms adrenaline fueled beside her, slightly suspended in the air. She shook her head a few times, furrowing her brows at the other, “Am I going crazy? You look....so young.” Eden looked down at her own body masked by the heavy rain, her hands looked smoother, her skin was softer, her stomach was flatter and her waist thinner. She rubbed her hand to her gut, just hovering over the soaked fabric of her shirt, almost afraid to touch herself. She looked back up at Ines just in time for another passing body to shove her, causing her to let out a squeak as her body pushed forward into Ines. Well, at least Eden knew they were both really there.

Iris couldn’t take anymore of her mother’s badgering to hang out with friends, and it wasn’t like she could just shout “I’m fifty-seven years old stop telling me what I should do!” Being twenty-two in the summer of ‘89 was hard enough the first time, let alone doing it twice. She needed to get out of the house, walk to clear her head and figure out where to go from here. Her walk had taken her to the Endgame Arcade, a place she’d spent months at last summer of 1989 hiding from Jamie and Ines. Her eyebrows rose at Eden’s sour response, and for the first time in three days she smiled. “Well, I didn’t think you had it in you to be this moody, Levine. All I wanted was change for a twenty,” Iris waved the twenty dollars she was holding in her hand, “but I guess you’re right, what’s the point, huh?”

Eden looked up to see Iris, and understandably she’d entirely forgotten about any drama that happened that summer due to the years that had passed, even that between Iris and her baby sister. Surprisingly, she gave a half laugh at Iris’s joke before pushing her body up to turn to the register. “Age does that to you.” she mumbled, mostly to herself and not expecting Iris to understand. At this point she’d run into a few people who also seemed stuck in their younger bodies, but it was easier to assume that wasn’t the case. “I don’t think you’d understand, Iris, but I envy you for it.” she said subliminally, scrunching her nose at the girl to appear as though she was just teasing. “What do you want, a few fives, a ten, twenty singles? I’ve got all day, literally.” though, she hoped that last part wasn’t true.

Day 3, Eden stuck her thumb nail into the veins on her wrist. She leaned lazily over the counter at Endgame Arcade where she’d worked that summer in 1989. It felt silly to be standing there now for her shift, but unable to tell her parents that she was just...(time traveling?) having a bad dream and would eventually wake up, her bantering mother forced her to show up for her summer job. Needless to say, Eden hoped that maybe if she did everything right she would wake up one day in her bed in 2020 and things would be back to normal. Considering she wasn’t acting her usual cheery and bright self, a few people had already asked her if she was feeling okay (she wasn’t). Hearing a voice and assuming it was someone trying to get change for the machines, Eden sighed, “Does it matter? We’re all stuck in some nightmare anyway.” @iriszhao​

Ines was the first person Eden saw during the storm who left her dumbfounded. She barely recognized them at the funeral considering they’d only met briefly that one summer when Ines was fooling around with Eden’s younger sister Jamie. Looking around, drenched in rain and in a slight panic, Eden searched for her husband but instead, she made direct eye contact with someone else. Through the crowd of running people searching for shelter, Eden stared confused at Ines and how they looked so...young. Luckily, the other looked just as confused as she did, so Eden brisk walked over. Shoulder slamming into scurrying bodies, her thin and much lighter frame nearly knocked over, but when she finally got to Ines she wanted to scream. “Ines?!” she yelled over the chaos and noise and rain, as if confirming what seemed crazy. “What the fuck is going on?” @inesinaugust​

Soaking wet from the storm, Eden’s unfamiliar long dark hair stuck to the skin of her face. She finally felt the release of her mother’s grip on her wrist once the door to her childhood home closed behind her, and she stood dripping on the welcome home carpet. Overwhelmed by the loud, aching beating of her chest she looked around slowly taking in her surroundings. The walls were covered with old photographs, the paint job was thirty years too late, and it smelled the way it did in the summers when she was a teenager. Her mother trailed off, the fading sounds of the older woman aggressively rambling in Mandarin about the rain. Eden’s head shot to the left at the sound of a deep, raspy chuckle and she nearly felt her legs give in under her. “Dad?” Her fingers felt like static on the surface of a balloon, she ran fast and wrapped her arms around the man who, despite her memory, was much younger now and still blonde. “Whoa, hey there honey. Happy to see me? You’re all wet!” 

Eden leaned back to take him in and, remembering that she too was in her younger body, blinked hard to keep her tears back. “I uh-I missed you.” she croaked, and he looked at her funny. “Your sister’s in the kitchen drenched, acting weird too, you sure you two are alright? It seemed like just a little rain.” Eden’s head perked up at the mention of Jamie, her shoulders straightening. Not bothering to answer her father, she stormed off to her mother’s favorite room in the house. Inhaling deeply before her thin frame slowly slid into view from the doorway, she stood facing her little sister unsure if Jamie was just a figment of whatever nightmare this was, or if they were the same. After a long stare, eyes widening, Eden whispered, “...Jam?” closed @j-mie​

✧ BEFORE SUMMER 1989

Always regular, they grew up in a regular house with regular happy-go-lucky parents and a regular family dog with a regular drama feel childhood. Their parents never asked much from them, their best friend guided them into popularity by association, and they spent their high school years well into their twenties dating the person everyone in town assumed they would marry. Uncomplicated, they laughed at jokes they didn’t find funny, loved parties and bright lights and having fun, were a natural optimist and believer, and scarcely shared their personal thoughts with anyone. If asked who they thought they were, they would hesitate, and it’s a surprise they didn’t break down at any part of their life and unravel into a million pieces. 

✧ AFTER SUMMER 1989

Daughter of Stephen, owner of Nowhere’s only movie theater and resident town uncle, Eden was used to her family being picture perfect and quite popular among other locals at The Lakes. Forever a good girl, she rarely stepped out of line or did anything on a whim, and most if any of her bad decisions were at the influence of their long term best friend My Tears Ricochet. Eden left town long after her younger sister did, and she only did so upon secretly wanting to be a dancer her whole life and getting a letter about an audition in the mail. After weeks of hiding the letter from her family and friends, unsure if she would take the opportunity and unwilling to hear her mother complain about how her favorite daughter should focus on finding a husband and not a silly hobby. After an argument where her younger, and much braver, sister called her out for being a pushover, it was actually the little Levine that was Eden’s final shove out of Nowhere. 

Flying to California for the audition, her lack of technical training and overall nerves led to not getting a call back. Too embarrassed to go home, and slightly liberated by the feel of a new city compared to the quiet customs of The Lakes, Eden stayed a little longer. In an attempt to get on her feet, she started working at a local nightclub as a dancer, though she didn’t ooze sex appeal and appeared consistently uncomfortable. Through her time stripping, fragile glass acting as a reflection for the men that looked at her every night for answers to their boring overpaying business jobs and failing marriages, Eden did make a few solid friends. In a very hustler-esque fashion, she found herself involved in a few money schemes before of course, her elitism and being raised to look for a ‘savior’ in others led her to marrying one of her corporate suit and tie clients and becoming his trophy wife. Pushing out five of his kids and living in a big home with a white picket fence, Eden spent the rest of her life doing exactly what was expected of her, and it’s a mystery if she has any clue who she actually is or if she was ever happy. She moved back to Nowhere in her forties and raised her family there, never telling anyone how her and her husband met, and falling back into the comfort of being My Tear’s Ricochet’s pawn. With a life long friendship under their belt, Eden was devastated at their best friend’s funeral, and there was no question of their attendance.

✧ CONNECTIONS

INVISIBLE STRING: Their long standing partner, high school sweethearts into their twenties it was expected that these two would eventually marry. Both part of the socialite crowd in Nowhere, it was easy to have a perfect relationship when you have a perfect life. They dated well past the summer of ‘89 and ended things in their late twenties, even if Invisible Strings was cheating on them that summer and Mirrorball to this day doesn’t know. Now that they’re back in time, in order to not appear out of place to the people around them, they’ll have to act up their romance as if they’re in their early 20s again.

MY TEARS RICOCHET: Their best friend, they often find that they bend to the will of this ring master, and act almost as their background singer in life. There is love there and they are close, but at what cost? They remain friends until their old age, but Mirrorball sometimes wonders if their lives would have been different had they stood up to My Tears Ricochet sooner. 

SEVEN: Old coworkers at Endgame Arcade that summer, they never talked much outside of work but always had a friendly relationship because of it. Though, if Mirrorball was around other people, they wouldn’t give Seven the time of day. Now that they’re forced to work at the arcade again in order to keep the timeline in check, maybe a better friendship will blossom.
