Another Introduction to Classical Mosaics class last Sunday. Three students who did great work using smalti, Perlatino (limestone), 24k mosaic gold, and glass beads, set into mortar. The lessons were: learn to cut those materials, learn to mix and manage mortar, follow a pattern, keep your lines straight, choose bead and gold colors that reflect your aesthetic, use a balanced mix of materials in an aesthetically pleasing way. Very successful first mosaics by all three!

“Emergent Spring.” New mosaic, finished 4/30/17, 9″ x 12″. Marble, Azzuro Cielo, Rosa Portogallo Aurora, smalti, semi-precious stones, mosaic gold, beads. The “snow” is built up so that the emergent vegetation is at a lower level; the snow is melting, to reveal the Spring growth underneath.
