Plastics Don’t Disappear, They End Up In Seabirds’ Bellies - NPR

The vast majority of debris in the ocean — about 75 percent of it — is made of plastic. While plastic may break down into smaller and smaller pieces, some as small as grains of sand, these pieces are never truly biodegradable. The plastic bits, some small enough that they’re called microplastics, threaten marine life like fish and birds, explains Richard Thompson, a professor of marine biology at Plymouth University in the U.K.

"The smaller the piece of debris, the more accessible it is — and the wider the range of creatures that could potentially eat it," says Thompson, who talked with NPR’s Melissa Block about his research on the effects of these tiny particles

The Butterfly Leaf

Today, I thought I saw a butterfly get stuck in a spider's web. I saw its fragile little wings get caught in a predator's net. I even envisioned it struggling at first to free itself from the web, only to give up a couple of seconds later, accepting its fate. I struggled with deciding to help the butterfly become free to live what was left of its short existence, or let Mother Nature to do its thing. I decided not to infringe on this only too natural occurrence, and I found myself wondering if I had gotten to that point in my adult life where I didn't care much about things like saving butterflies from spiders. I then drew nearer to the bush and noticed the butterfly was actually a dried up leaf.
