James Dean and Pier Angeli had a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair in the early 1950s. Their relationship was cut short when Angeli, under pressure from her mother, married singer Vic Damone instead of Dean. The mother's reason being that Dean was not Italian, nor Catholic. Dean was reportedly heartbroken and on the day of Angeli's wedding to Damone, it was said he watched the wedding ceremony from across the street on his motorcycle. Angeli later stated that Dean was the only man she ever loved. Her marriage to Damone ended in 1958 having lasted just 4 years. Her life was marred by personal struggles and professional setbacks. She died at age 39 in 1971 from a barbiturate overdose.
