I writing evil or nearly evil characters more fun than writing good guys. I’m sick of feeling like people are going to judge me for my characters. I have a right to rp what I want and explain my characters actions, but not try to justify them. Because I know why a character acts a certain way doesn’t mean I think they are excused. The world isn’t black and white.

The training room of the Jedi Temple had been reserved by Draven. Perhaps it was his bias as a peacekeeper, but while his Padawan focused her studies in the studies of healing and diplomacy, he worried her lightsaber skills were slacking as a result. This sparring round had confirmed his fears.

“The studies of the Force and the studies of the lightsaber are not that different,” he said, gripping his training saber and re-igniting it. “You let it flow through you and your saber, until you are one. When you constructed your lightsaber, it is done with the Force, and a connection between you and the crystal. Wielding the saber is an extension of that bond. The different forms of combat are the ways we can channel the Force through us, and through our weapon.”

Draven hoped a more academic explanation would help his Padawan dedicate herself to this a bit more. To change up his teaching technique could be the key to teaching her to master this skill at all. And that gave him an idea... “Nadine, begin with the opening stance of Soresu. I want to try something more your speed.”

  Nadine caught the saber with a mumbled, “Sorry master,” Then straightened up from where she’d stumbled back as he continued, despite her remaining frustration listening carefully for anything in his words to help with this. Perhaps it would help to think of it that way; not just wielding a weapon, but using and connecting to the Force through it, just as she’d done when she’d built it.

  She hadn’t been giving her full focus, and she knew it; she didn’t mean not to, really, she understood well the importance to any Jedi of being able to protect others, and she wanted to be ready if she ever needed to... But the truth was, she hated it. Hated fighting, hated swinging a weapon at someone.

  It just felt wrong.

  Still, she resolved to commit herself a little better, and at his last words she raised an eyebrow curiously but reactivated her own saber and followed his instructions, “Okay- what next?”

Draven let out a breath as his young Padawan tried her best to mimic the motions. He knew that’s what it was, though, just mimicking. From what he could tell, Nadine wasn’t allowing herself to feel when she wielded the saber.

“I think you may have been listening too much to Fay’s teachings. You need to let it flow through you. For us Jedi, wielding our lightsaber is just as much in defense of life in this world as your healing,” He scolded sternly. A hand ran across his beard as young Verelis struggled.

Already he felt guilty for his own frustration. He shouldn’t lose patience, and he shouldn’t expect her to think like him. She was still trying after all.

Draven approached her, only a few feet away now, and looked down at the child’s brown eyes. “Nadine, you are one of the most gifted Jedi I’ve ever seen. Your attunement to the Force even surprises me sometimes. But your anxieties cloud your abilities. They block your potential... Think of what matters most. That kind heart that fuels your anxiety is exactly what you can use to beat them. Think of what matters most! It’s different here in the temple, but out in the world, there will come a day where your lightsaber and your skill with it is what will save lives, and that is why it is a part of us... Never forget that, Nadine.”

Draven regarded his Padawan’s opening stance. She had been studying, that much was certain. But she employed more theory than practice, something he made a mental note of as with one hand he slowly but firmly lowered her elbow to keep her forearm and wrist lined up with the saber in the Form 3 opening stance.

“You aren’t as physically capable as many of your peers. Ataru and Djem So would both physically and mentally exhaust you, Nadine. Both for the physicality it demands,” he began, taking the opening stance facing her. He was grateful that with his ambidexterity he could mirror the young Nadine and her left-handed dominance rather well. “And for the mindset it requires one to adopt. The Jedi suit you well, but some days I wonder if you listen to Faye too much... Consider this focus a middle ground. Unlike Ataru, Soresu does not benefit from aggressive or acrobatic movements.”

As Draven instructed her, he began to demonstrate the basic movements, slowly step-by-step so that she may follow. “Each of these is precise and tight in its motion. Remember your training as a youngling with the probe droids. Remember the Force guiding you to defend where the next attack would come from... Soresu requires you to be the eye of the storm. Calm, even with conflict around you. Never lose your center, and with enough physical training... You will never be conquered. And if you can never be conquered, then what to do with your opponent will always be your choice.”

“Hmph. You know botany knowledge comes with experience and education as well. Not just flunking into the agricorps. You might forget that I was once a Jedi Peacekeeper too wheb I was younger and more… naïve.”

Draven felt that irking anger boil under the skin. The emotions associated with memories of the Jedi, it made him and the Force around him rumble. But he kept as composed as he could for now. But all he could think of when she spoke of the Jedi’s feeble efforts were the needless lives lost. Terrible beings risen to power because of the Jedi’s incompetence. Their weakness. Their failure. But someone had to act. Someone had to grow a spine. Turns out that when nobody else does, that’s when tyrants sprout from the depths.

“Your anger is a weapon. Suitable. But the Jedi put you into a passive role to better suit their needs rather than any greater good...” Draven said with a huff, his breath forming a thick cloud in the cold climate. “But you never let go of your anger, did you? So what, did you just not have the guts to use it, or do you need someone to teach you how?”

“No, indeed not. I left the Jedi for a reason,” Draven says rather solemnly once Ziv finished her prideful rant.

The ruins that surrounded them on this planet brought back memories. Kind ones of his apprentice, his own mentor, his friends, fellow Jedi... Family. But those memories were unfortunately now associate with things he had learned to hate. The version of him that was weak. All the things the Jedi taught him that allowed for cruelty to arise, for Empire to rise, all because they lacked a spine.

And now this tiny pup was trying to lecture him? An anger boiled just beneath the skin, to insignificant to be detected, but there within him nonetheless. “Well, then, I can’t help but notice that there is one thing that leads a Padawan to joining the Corps. So let me ask you this: Which of the Trials did you fail?”
